Euphoria in fever

Post by arista000 »

Hello everyone -

I would be grateful for information on any experiences with patients who
(consistently) feel *euphoric* when they have a high fever (over 38
Celsius).

I'd like to emphasise that the patient is NOT delirious - that is a very
important point. She gets fever very, very rarely - maybe once every two
or three years. The onset is usually very sudden, and the fever doesn't
last very long: an hour or two (it is broken by sweat). As soon as it
surpasses 38,5 Celsius, she starts shaking violently all over her body,
even her teeth start clattering with fever - and yet, she feels so
utterly happy and CAREFREE (the key word in her case, as she feels that
- being a person with extreme empathy and an acutely lucid, piercing
mind - that is precisely what is sorely lacking from her life) that she
actually *looks forward* to high fever. (N.B. It might be worth
remembering that, before the invention of the electric-shock therapy,
induced high fever was used to "treat" depression - and she does suffer
from depression.)

She lives alone, which excludes the possibility of this being a
psychological effect of not having to tend to others - or of being taken
care of by others.

It may also be worth pointing out, though, that she remembers that was
*always* the case, even when she was a child. (And she was a merry,
relatively carefree child.) She got fever very rarely, but when it hit
the cca 38,5 Celsius mark, a feeling of total bliss invaded her.

It is an extremely complicated case, so I it would be useless to go into
more details at this moment. I'd just like to point out once again that
the feeling seems to be nothing short of euphoria; and that the patient
is absolutely NOT delirating. (The fever never climbs higher than 38,9
Celsius.)
If any of you have had a similar experience with a patient, I would be
very happy to hear about it, especially about the Rx considered.
All the best,

A.

I actually replied to this but as I am not receiving messages I have
only just realised it hasn't arrived - so I'll try again again

maybe try and look at the rx in the rubric 'ecstasy during fever' or in
'tranquility' with rx that have high fever such as Arnica, Phos-ac,
Coffea or Morphine - sounds like one of the drug type rx but also
tubercular in someone who needs an extreme situation to feel good and
who is also empathic. Maybe use the rubric 'desires to be magnetised'.

It also reads like the high fever induces chemicals in the body that
create this good feeling (like the alkaloids of opium, pain killing
action) and this is akin to situations with people who suffer from
opisthotonos and they lean back so far their airway is almost
obstructed and they enjoy the buzz they get when they straighten up
(had a couple of cases of epilepsy like that). Hope useful and again
sorry if the other post turns up as well. Joy

Thank you very VERY much.
Kind regards,

A.
P.S. (and totally off-topic - sorry for that): I've been reading your
article about Calendula. A true eye opener. :-)

Tho we see a much higher fever than 38,5 (101.3 F) in malaria (40+), I've heard of this "happy" feeling in the high malarial fevers, esp cerebral malaria. I've had reports of people feeling "of going (floating) beyond the pain." "as if they could simply fly (float) away.... forever and ever...." (Ohyeah! ...and malaria does just that to patients.....they "fly" right out of their bodies and die!) One person who got malaria frequently, told me (with tongue-in-cheek?) that somehow he looked forward to that "euphoria" if for no other reason that it took him beyond the pain.

Look to the malaria rx's for clues.

china, china ars, china sulph.

Perhaps too - eupat perf, nat m, ars. a, cedron

I too wanted to add something to this topic even though it is quite 'late'.
The following is a reference to euphoria in fever from P. Sankaran - The
Elements of Homoeopathy. in EH
"Those who have used Pyrogen with success marvel at the magical efficacy of
the drug. It has very clear indications like hyperpyrexia, oscillating
temperature double rise of temperature, a feeling of euphoria in spite of
fever, etc. It has symptoms of several drugs like Arnica, Arsenic, Baptisia,
etc., all rolled into one. It is indicated in a wide variety of fevers and
it can be called the "homoeopathic broad spectrum antibiotic", of course
acting on its own indications. It is almost a specific for puerperal sepsis.
Foubister says that it may be prescribed even pathologically when there is a
septic focus with either a swinging temperature or disproportion between
pulse and temperature."

How might one observe the "double rise" and "swinging temperature"
other than frequent checks of the thermometer--which I just about never
use? (Having decided long ago that "how sick" is much more meaningful
than "how high"!) How often would one have to take the temp in order
to observe these??
Thanks,

One of the things I like about working in Africa is that the "old homeopaths" ways are still very valid. e.g. I was discussing it the other day with some of our people how Clarke's "The Prescriber" is very right on target for much of our work.

If you are caring for a serious case, you, or the caregiver, makes a chart like hospitals do and monitors every 1-2 hours ie fever, bp, pulse, etc. Tho I've had only one occasion to personally employ that method outside the hospital. I don't think it's not as onerous as it sounds - eg I believe many parents check this way anyway when their kids are sick; just need to tell them to write it down for you.

Thanks Didi, I'll remember that! (And guess I had better get familiar
with "The Prescriber", finally!)
