Hello Grant and all,
The tendency to hypo-activity, hyper-activity and alternation
represents the what the ancients called the 3 forces, the vital force (+);
the natural force (-) and the psychic force (0). The three forces are
inherent in the the five elements as each element predominates in one of
the forces. The ancients considered these part of the homoeomeries and
symbolized them by the names earth, water, fire and air and the four humors
bile, phlegm, blood and atrabile. Ether related to space and consciousness.
The four stages of pathology inflammation and irritation, induration and
infiltration, suppuration and scaring and ulceration and necroses are
innate to the animal constitution and is found throughout nature. Earth and
bile are related to inflammation and irritation; water and phlegm to
infiltration and induration; fire to suppuration and scarring; and atrabile
to ulceration and necrosis. That these terms and observations were already
in use 2, 500 years ago shows how these patterns are innate in nature. This
is part of the bigger picture.
The equation of the three miasms psora, sycosis and syphilis with the
three forces (+, 0, -) can be useful in that it helps study symptoms in
groups. Because the three miasms follow the principles of the three forces
this can be used as a system of classification no matter what one calls
them. To completely de-link the subject of miasms from infection, however,
completely leaves out the subject of homoeopathic epidemiology, which is an
essential aspect of the practice of homoeopathic medicine. The miasms as
only inheritance leaves out the treatment of acquired miasms which still
kill 1,000,000s of people today!
One cannot ignore the presence of cholera, typhoid, rabies, malaria,
tuberculosis, gonorrhea N, syphilis, hepatitis, AIDS, etc. To "give up" the
idea that miasms are related to infection is not utilizing all the aspects
of the theory of chronic diseases introduced by Hahnemann. To really walk
in Hahnemann's footsteps one has to take a serious look at what he is
literally saying. He clearly says that the miasms are linked to infections
diseases! He clearly points out that cholera is caused by microorganisms
and states that acute miasms end when the parasites die out but chronic
miasms are life long parasites that are not self limiting. Ideas like this
make Hahnemann is the Founder of modern epidemiology. Homoeopaths should
not forget this nor leave this work behind!
Hahnemann suggests that we look at infectious diseases as collect
disorders in categories of acute, half acute and chronic miasms and use the
group case to assess their symptoms to find appropriate genus remedies for
the prevention and treatment of these epidemic diseases. To "give up" this
aspect of Hahnemann's teaching is a GREAT mistake. This methodology can be
applied to all infectious diseases and their sequels. I am very glad that
many serious homoeopaths now realize this and are working hard to bring
this material up to date. We need to map all the major infectious miasms
with the tools Hahnemann gave us! There are many more infectious miasms
than three.
When it comes to inherited miasms and constitutional predispositions we
may never know the causal agents. Here cause and effect become an endless
circle expanding into the distant past. Sometimes, we find causal elements
in the parents and family tree. Such information can be very helpful at
times. This, however, is not always possible nor always necessary as we can
go by the symptoms and attendant circumstances alone. In this way, the
chronic miasms can be used as a disease classification system which helps
one place symptoms and remedies into groups. Here the miasms become a
window for viewing processes of three forces and five elements as part of
the innate homoeomeries. These patterns do line up because they are based
on the way the human constitution and temperament expresses disease states
in accordance with its fundamental Esse. All this materia is valid if seen
in the proper light.
So in my world one does not have to give up anything! This includes
homoeopathic epidemiology and the understanding miasms as the effects of
infectious diseases as well as the constitutional view of the archetypal
patterns associated by the ancients with the homoeomeries. In the dualistic
world it is too easy to fall into the trap of being for or against
something rather than finding true unity. It is too limiting to think in
terms of the effects of infections versus innate patterns. Why set two
sides of the same coin against each other when they can be seen as a whole?
We need to understand miasms as infectious diseases and their sequels to
find effective genus remedies for acute, half acute and chronic epidemics
and we can use inherited miasms as a system of classification for groups of
homogeneous symptoms. This is because all phenomena is only composed of
certain similar patterns the ancients called the primordial homoeomeries.
I do hope people can transcend the "for or against mentally" associated
with dualistic thinking! It so easy to fall into seeing half the picture
and thinking it is the whole and then setting it against the other half of
the picture that actually completes the portrait we are looking for! If one
understands the nature of the priori, the innate homoeomeries, then one can
see what appears like opposites to some as a unified field theory. So my
advice to my colleagues is not to give up anything because when diversity
is seen as a Gestalt pattern it becomes a whole that is more than the sum
of its parts.
Sincerely, David Little

Hi David,
Thanks for this unifying piece of art, this is exactly the way I see this,
miasms are both Infection & (changed)Constitution.
Yes, the miasmic circle is a good image that we must continue to use in
these discussions!
