Constitutional timing with regards to time of month
Constitutional timing with regards to time of month
I was wondering if any of you have any hard and fast (or even soft and
general) rules of thumb regarding beginning a constitutional remedy:
At the start of the patient's period? After it? During? Or do you
think it makes no difference? What have been your experiences?

Re: Constitutional timing with regards to time of month
I was taught during my training that it was not advisable to start treatment
on a constitutionallevel close before a period or in the first days after it
starts - I was taught that the best timing is on the 5th day after the
bleeding starts. At this point the body has done most of its clearing and
the new creative cycle is on its way up again therefore the bodies energy is
at its most receptive to positive influences. Regards Pauline

Re: Constitutional timing with regards to time of month
It is better to start constitutional treatment after the periods are
over. Once again if the menses is part of aggravation for eg, < after
menses then do not give the medicine at the time of aggravation. Wait
for the condition to ameliorate and then give it. Usually - notjust
with regards to menses- it is better to give the medicine when the
patient is suffering less. Pregnancy is a good time since most of the
chronic synptoms are in abeyance.
Of course most of these aggravation related advice probably came out
of using dry doses of C potencies ( the antiquated 4th edition
practice) - so modern LM / water dosers might have better and current
advice.

Re: Constitutional timing with regards to time of month
At college we were taught not to give a remedy when a period is due or
during the first few days when the energy of the period may use up the
energy of the remedy. However the number of times I have given a Rx and it
has started a period off within a couple of days........

So... say an individual presents a perfect Nat Mur picture but the menstrual
pain is too acute and the concomittants suggest Nux V, do you give the Nat
Mur the farthest from the period and the Nux when the 'acute' sx from menses
arise, or...?
Caro.

Re: Constitutional timing with regards to time of month
This might depend on when the client comes to see you. If a period is
imminent or happening then you would want to treat the acute state that
is present and dominating and then assess afterwards to see if a deeper
situation is present to prescribe on. If the period is a way off then
you would likely treat the larger picture, take a mini case of the
acute pains and possible offer an acute rx in case it is needed. Every
case is an individual case. Joy

Re: Constitutional timing with regards to time of month
When the pain is acute you need to treat the pain. You cannot
postpone it . THe question is about when you have time to do it and
there is a way you can plan. Even in surgery there is emergency
surgery and elective surgery. When it is elective that is when you
plan for an optimum time.
I have known homeopaths who when a patient is in acute pain( not
necessarly menstrual) ask the patient to wait in the clinic after
giving them the medicine, wait for the pain to subside and then send
them home. I have done it a few times too.
If the right medicine is chosen there is relief in a short time.

Re: Constitutional timing with regards to time of month
Caro, I find that I do what you were suggesting - using acutes before and
during period (if they are indicated) and then follow with the deeper acting
one on 5th night after period starts. However if the only remedy that fits
(with excellent correspondence) is what I would class as constitutional I
will sometimes give it before or during a period. However my experience has
taught me that if they are an emotional person or in an emotional state that
it can often bring on an emotional crisis at this time and if menstrual and
in pain this can be difficult for them, not to mention their families or
partners (Nat Mur is one of these remedies) so I often err on the side of
caution and give a related remedy like Pulsatilla or Nux, or Mag Phos and
others (depending on the correspondence to the complaint) until the 5th
night and then give the deeper acting remedies. I also have found that it
can also intensify the period either in volume or in pain and the pateint
themselves then steer away from taking the deeper remedy before their
period. This does not hold for all remedies as some are not greatly affected
by menses. My constitutional remedy is Nit ac and I can seem to take with
impunity at any time of the month it is indicated. I was told by teacher
though that Nit ac is not a remedy that will agg menses.
Hope this ghelps Regards Pauline

Re: Constitutional timing with regards to time of month
Dear Pauline,
Thanks for the thorough explanation, it is really very helpful in the case
I'm thinking of, which most certainly covers Nat Mur but hasn't improved
painful periods.
I once gave it to her at the time that was supposed to be a few days before
menses and it brought them on that very day. Curiously, it helped her
emotional disposition A LOT, although for a couple of days only... must
reinforce the theory that remedy is quickly used up by the energy of the
body at that time of the month. She did say that the menses were less
clotted, a bit more profuse, a bit less painful than usual... but the Nux V
picture of the acute remained. I think I'm gonna go ahead and try Nux V when
she gets them next time and hopefully it'll take care of the situation.
Thanks a lot:-)!
Caro.
