Hi Rochelle-
There is a difference between these two. Lancinating is more like
using a spear and I have seen many patients using the term. Patients
typically say that it was a piercing pain like using a spear ( as in
stitching pain they typically say that it feels like stitching).
Cutting is what you are probably looking for in this instance. Slicing
has a sharpness or exquisiteness to the cut in contrast to hacking,
which is also cutting.

Thanks for that. Obviously cutting is the one I require!!

Ii wonder if that is where the word lancing (as in lancing a boil) comes
from as that is more a spearing!!

In Yasgur's the word above lancinating is lancet, defined as "a surgical instrument of a variety of shapes, usually very sharp, sharp pointed and double-edged, used in venesection, opening abscesses and cutting in general".

In Tabor's "lancinating (L. lancinare (in italics) to tear) Sharp or cutting, as pain".

So if someone talks of a "stabbing" pain, then "lancinating" is the
rubric we want?

stabbing is close to it -- a deep stab could be lancinating though
not exactly so- piercing using a knife - whereas lancinating is
piercing using a spear...

In my native language I have had patients clearly differntiating the
feeling - between the stab of a knife and the piercing with a spear-
though it might not be that common in English to talk of being
poked with a spear or a lance
