Hello Robert,

Generally a confused symptom picture and reports of these treatments
having helped partially then not at all, or, of resolution of past
symptoms with new symptoms now present - though they do not understand
concepts of suppression or direction of cure and so do not see any
significance to these patterns.

I often find these people hard to work with because after multiple
remedies, complexes, constant repetitions, they find it hard to settle
to one infrequently prescribed remedy that may be further diluted by
drops in liquid when they are used to taking multiple pilules and
tablets - after all, this is how it is sold in the health food stores
and by other therapists! They also like the "buzz" of machines, that
will test them and then make the prescriptions for them.

Do have one person recently, though, who is a lovely case. Came in
with multiple health problems - many of them triggered by being highly
allergic and having long-term ADHD. I had previously met this person
at the workshops I run to teach the community about homeopathy. She
challenged me with many question throughout the workshops as the way I
taught that homeopathy should be used (similia, single remedy, minimal
dose, etc) contradicted the treatment she was receiving from her
doctor who was obviously far more of a "specialist" in this area than
me. As she was not making a lot of progress homeopathy could not be as
easy as I was making out with my simple guidelines.

At the end of the workshops, she did say that when the workers
compensation payments ceased that paid for the treatment by this
doctor (she had become extremely unwell after being exposed to
chemicals that had been used in her work environment) she may make an
paying appointment to see me if she was no better.

When she did phone, some months later, I almost groaned. At the
beginning of the consult, she passed me the list of treatments that
she was receiving from the doctor. I ran my eye down it briefly - it
was an extensive list of simplexes and complexes in a range of
potencies, herbs, vitamins, and goodness knows what else. Some of the
remedies were not even known homeopathic medicines but other
substances in potentised form (and I am not just talking about
allergens). There had been many changes through the course of
treatment and at that time, she was still on about 12 different
remedies and complexes to be taken according to a preset schedule,
some many times a day.

As I took her case, her symptoms were just screaming for Phosphorus -
even a student who had only just studied Phos would have recognised
it. My heart sank because I thought that she must have surely been
given Phos by this doctor at some point of time and that it had not
helped. I braced myself for a difficult period of management. At the
end of the consult when I looked at the list to see when and where the
Phos had been given I found that it had never been prescribed!

I got her to take one highly diluted test dose to check her
sensitivity - almost blew her socks off and we quickly went to even
greater dilutions and olfaction doses about once a fortnight - cannot
explain how she was able to at all tolerate many of the remedies she
had been prescibed except that she had remained unwell with changing
symptoms under this treatment and that sensitivity is increased with
greater similarity.

After about 2 months, her many symptoms were about 80% better but she
found that the Phos seemed to be increasing her forgetfulness and poor
memory - was becoming quite a problem but she was prepared to put up
with it because of symptom improvement elsewhere and because for the
first time in her life she was able to focus on what she was doing and
had terrific clarity of mind. She was also a little bit annoyed with
me that my treatment has achieved this when it seemed as though next
to nothing was being done compared to what her previous doctor had
been prescribing for her.

This shift in the picture led to a lovely follow-on prescription of
Sulphur which is now doing fantastic work for her - still continuing
to improve and is able to remember. Still undergoing treatment. Wish
other cases were as easy to unravel as this one but usually not.
In Australia, we have easy access to free "good quality" health care,
hospital treatment and surgery (though waits may be long for
non-urgent things if not privately insured), free diagnostics and
pathology tests no matter what your income, and free or subsidised
medications, depending on your level of income. Alternative forms of
treatment such as homeopathy are not subsidised by the government so
it is hardly a level playing field. People obtaining homeopathics
through doctors, though, does allow them to pass the cost of the
consultation onto the government Medicare system but then you often
end up with the above sort of treatment.

There are also few restrictions on what sort of therapies may practice
so we do have a smorgasbord of modalities people may choose. Some such
as chiropractors have legal protection of their title which prevents
the untrained from hanging up a shingle and practicing on the
unsuspecting public. Unfortunately, homeopathy does not yet have this
though we do try to educate people to only use registered homeopaths.

Homeopathy is not as well known in this country as you may think but
increasingly, homeopathics (or potentised substances) are appearing in
formulas and supplements sold to other modality practitioners who sell
them to their patients on the assumption that they too are treating
homeopathically - no awareness of what it is or how it works and that
it is not a simple this for that system.

Have seen patients with aggravations from these supplements after
taking a twice daily dose for several days/weeks. A "Womens Hormonal
Formula" is one that immediately springs to mind that contains Puls
and Sep in fifty millesimal potencies combined with vitamins,
minerals, and herbs. to be swallowed in tablet form twice a day. Saw a
nasty agg from this one. Many other things appearing in potentised
form yet being labelled in the stores as a homeopathic medicine - saw
SamE the other day in potency and being labelled "homeopathic".
