Dear John,
Hahnemann taught that psora was such a complicated disease that has
travelled through so many constitutions over so many generations in so many
different environments that its secondary symptoms can not be cured by one
remedy alone! That is why he collected the symptoms of 100s of patients
over 11 years for his group anamnesis and then offer a list of 48 specific
anti-psoric remedies. Please refer to the Organon and Chronic Disease for
the details. One will never cure all cases of psora in all its varied forms
with psorinum alone. Nevertheless, it must be considered one of the
cardinal remedies for the effects psora, suppression and drugging. That is
why it has symptoms like:
In those subjects in whom the remedies do not seen to act promptly, we
must ascertain the cause that prevents their action. Psora. Administer a
dose of Psorinum before giving the remedy
corresponding to the totality. (Boenninghausen)
Where the character of an affection has been disguised by successive
administration of a large number of homoeopathic remedies, which, without
curing, have only altered the symptoms, a single dose of Psorinium a few
days (ordinarily the 4th) before giving the indicated remedy. (Boenninghausen)
Especially adapted to the psoric constitution. (H.C. Allen)
In chronic cases when well selected remedies fail to relieve or
permanently improve (in acute diseases, Sulph.); when Sulphur seems
indicated but fails to act. (H.C. Allen)
Lack of reaction after severe acute diseases. (H.C Allen)
Esp. indicated in constitutions which are PSORIC, i. e., IN PATIENTS,
SUBJECT TO GLANDULAR AND CUTANEOUS AFFECTIONS, AND WHO DO NOT REACT TO THE
APPARENTLY WELL - CHOSEN REMEDIES. [F]
Psoric constitutions; esp. when other remedies fail to permanently cure;
lack of reaction, after severe diseases [Hr.]; in chronic diseases [B.].
After - effects of infections diseases, lasting for years; clears up
confused cases [Br].
One can see that the nature of all these symptoms relate to psora,
suppression, lack of reaction and confused cases. These are very good
indications for the nosode family in general. All the nosodes for chronic
miasms share these types of symptoms. Therefore, it is not just psorinum
that must be considered. One must also think about Medorrhinium,
Tuberculinum, Syphilium, Carcinosin, etc. Therefore, one must make a
differential diagnosis by the nature of miasmic symptoms and the attendant
circumstances.
Sometimes one takes a good idea too far. Thinking that one should give
psorinum at the onset of every acute disease or it will cure all cases of
psora is such an example. As to acute diseases...years of experience by
many practitioners in treating acute diseases shows that this is NOT
necessary in most cases. When I choose a good acute remedy the patient
reacts quickly and the cases resolves rapidly. I have done this with the
most virulent acute miasms like typhoid and meningitis, etc., as well as
serious cases of food poisoning, exposure, etc, etc. There is simply no
need to start every case with Psorinum. It may even waste time. Acute
diseases are relatively easy to treat with acute remedies chosen by the
exciting cause and active symptoms. When there seems to be a problem and I
see the types of symptoms written above I might consider using the psorinum.
I would imagine that this person was inspired to use Psorinum as a major
remedy in psora by Hahnemann's use of Sulphur in psora. After all,
Hahnemann considered Sulphur to be somewhat specific at the start of a
chronic case of involving psora, suppression and drugging. He did not,
however, teach that one remedy will cure all cases of psora! He would start
2/3 of such cases with Sulphur and then progress to other antipsoric
remedies by the presiding symptoms and circumstances to complete the cure.
In acute diseases Hahnemann did NOT normally start the case with
Sulphur. He would give the most indicated acute remedy and then follow up
with chronic treatment later. In a few rare cases in which he thought psora
posed an obstacle to the cure he would alternate remedies like Aconite in
an acute fever with Sulphur. So this person may think they are doing what
Hahnemann did but that is not really correct. He is over simplifying the
situation in a manner Hahnemann never did.
