sleep paralysis

Post by Elizabeth Burgess »

Hi all
does anyone have any expwerience of treating this? It's not a case
of mine so I don't have a huge amount of detail but she is having
difficulty sleeping because she is so scared of feeling this way now. She
wakes up, but can't move and if the duvet is over her face she feels
unable to even blow it away. It seems that she is having trouble breathing
out, but she isn't sure that this is the case. It just feels like her
body is asleep. sometimes her eyes can see, she can always hear what is
happening around her. She has had the problem on and off when she naps
all her life, but it is becoming much more frequent now and is every
night EXCEPT when she listens to a meditative CD.
Her father had the same problem, he would nap and then feel like he
was in treacle and unable to move, he would manage to twitch though.
Any ideas where I could start with this one? I was thinking of
suggesting lavendar, but would this make it mor eof a problem???
She claims not to be overly anxious, she is a very outgoing, active,
friendly, bubbly person, 2 kids and happily married. HAs asgtruggle
not to be dominated by her Mum, but succeeeds. She is very creative,
fit and sporty. Only recently started meditating but loves it. VERY
loquacious, loves anecdotes and jokes - can't drink more than one glass of
wine without being very drunk (lots of food sensitivities in the
family).
The only new thing she has been trying was Bach remedies over
Christmas, hornbeam, agrimony, oak and possibly olive in a mixture. I have
suggested she stops these as they mainly relate to tiredness and
struggling on - perhaps they have given her too much energy?
Any suggestions for rubrics or previous experience with this would be
great, I know very little about the condition.
Thanks very much
Liz Burgess

Hi Liz - wish I had more time to respond, but she sounds v. phosphoric, but here's
a rubric that maybe covers what you describe:

Waking paralysed feeling (6): 3Arg., 2nat-c., ferr-i., kreos., op., phos.

Does she also have a fear of suffocation when she finds the duvet over her face ?
To differentiate, you will probably need the full case - but maybe others have
better suggestions.

Good luck, Barbara

You will of course need the full case

Remembering some not dissimilar cannabis induced experiences in my
youth, may I suggest exploring remedies in that sphere, canni-i +
sat, opium, etc

Dear Elizabeth, I think it needs to be ascertained as to whether this
is muscle paralysis, nerve paralysis, a SAI paralysed (that might link
to an indication of other emotional issues) or if it is feelings of
suffocation, respiratory paralysis or maybe the sleep is so deep and
almost comatose like that it takes a long time to come out of it etc.
In other words where is this coming from, on what plane is the gravity
of the case - physical, mental or emotional? If she is outgoing,
active, healthy etc, this lends even more strangeness to the case in
some ways but you need to know if this 'paralysis' is replicated
anywhere else in the case. The meditation might be bringing some issues
to the fore - is the start of that and the sx linked in any way?

The extreme loquacity suggests some inability to shut down and this is
being compensated through an inability to open up after sleep?

The fact that she is so easily influenced by alcohol might be a clue =
easily stupified + comatose sleep + agg wine + loquacious + fears going
to sleep + sleeps into aggravation???

Shouts a few rx at least :-)

Have a good weekend. Best wishes, Joy
