ANTHRAX DISEASE DESCRIPTION 1

A highly infectious disease of animals, especially ruminants, transmitted to
humans by contact with the animals or their products. herd animals, which
may be transmitted to humans through contact with infected beast Infection
is caused by the anthrax bacillus agent and the effects include formation of
pustules on the tissues of the body, especially the lungs, intestines, and
skin. Pulmonary anthrax symptoms include coughing blood, fever, chills,
headache, an extreme pain in the back and legs. Intestinal anthrax symptoms
include severe nausea, bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and hemorrhaging
from the mucous membranes.
=======================
Etiology and Epidemiology

The causative organism, Bacillus anthracis, is a large, Gram-positive,
facultatively anaerobic, encapsulated rod. The spores resist destruction by
disinfectants and heat and remain viable in soil and animal products for
decades. Human infection is usually through the skin but has occurred very
rarely in the GI tract after ingestion of contaminated meat. Inhaling spores
may result in pulmonary anthrax (woolsorter's disease), which is often
fatal.

Following entry into the body, the spores germinate inside macrophages, and
the bacteria are transported to regional lymph nodes, where they multiply.
The bacteria produce a variety of toxins; protective antigen binds to
target cells and facilitates cellular entry of edema toxin and lethal
toxin. Lethal toxin triggers a massive release of cytokines from
macrophages, which is responsible for the sudden death common in anthrax
infections.

Although anthrax is an important animal disease, it is rare in humans and
mainly occurs in countries that do not prevent industrial or agricultural
exposure to infected goats, cattle, sheep, and horses or their products.
Anthrax also occurs in exotic wildlife such as hippos, elephants, and cape
buffalo.

==================
Symptoms and Signs

The incubation period varies from 12 h to 5 days (generally, 3 to 5 days).

The cutaneous form begins as a painless, pruritic, red-brown papule; as it
enlarges, it is surrounded by a zone of brawny erythema and gelatin-like
edema. Considerable peripheral erythema, vesiculation, and induration are
present. Central ulceration follows, with serosanguineous exudation and
formation of a black eschar (see Figure). Local lymphadenopathy may occur,
occasionally with malaise, myalgia, headache, fever, nausea, and vomiting.

Initial symptoms of pulmonary anthrax are insidious and resemble influenza.
Fever increases, and within a few days, severe respiratory distress
develops, followed by cyanosis, shock, and coma. Severe hemorrhagic
necrotizing lymphadenitis develops and spreads to the adjacent mediastinal
structures. Serosanguineous transudation, pulmonary edema, and pleural
effusion occur. Hemorrhagic meningoencephalitis and/or GI anthrax may
develop. Lung x-ray may show diffuse patchy infiltration; the mediastinum is
widened because of enlarged hemorrhagic lymph nodes.

In GI anthrax, the released toxin induces a hemorrhagic necrosis extending
to the draining mesenteric lymph nodes. Septicemia with potentially lethal
toxicity ensues.

========
Diagnosis

The occupational and exposure history is important. Cultures or Gram stains
from cutaneous lesions may be used to isolate B. anthracis, and throat
swabs and sputum may be used in the pulmonary form. When primary cultures do
not grow, the organism may be isolated by mouse inoculation. Polymerase
chain reaction (PCR) on blood samples also may be used.

Diagnosis of GI anthrax depends on recognition of clinical symptoms.
Occasionally, organisms can be seen by Gram stain of vomitus or feces.
Clinically, GI anthrax presents with nausea, vomiting, anorexia, and fever
progressing to bowel necrosis with
concurrent septicemia and death. An oropharyngeal form of anthrax presents
as a mucocutaneous lesion in the oral cavity with sore throat, fever,
adenopathy, and dysphagia, which may proceed to necrosis and death.

=====================
Prevention and Treatment

An anthrax vaccine, composed of a culture filtrate, is available for those
at high risk (armed forces personnel, veterinarians, laboratory technicians,
employees of textile mills processing imported goat hair). Repeated
vaccination may be required to ensure protection. Local reactions can occur.
A live toxigenic, unencapsulated avirulent animal vaccine is available for
veterinary use.

Most strains of anthrax are susceptible to penicillin. However, the organism
often manifests inducible beta-lactamases, so single-drug therapy with
penicillin is not recommended. Cephalosporins are not recommended.

People exposed to inhaled anthrax require prophylactic treatment with oral
ciprofloxacin 500 mg bid, or doxycycline 100 mg bid for 60 days. Amoxicillin
500 mg tid is an option where ciprofloxacin and doxycycline are
contraindicated. Induction of beta-lactam resistance is of less concern with
the lower number of organisms present in prophylactic use.

Cutaneous anthrax is treated with oral ciprofloxacin 500 mg bid, or
doxycycline 100 mg bid for 7 days. Treatment is extended to 60 days if there
is a possibility of concomitant inhalation exposure. Cutaneous anthrax with
significant edema or systemic symptoms, as well as all patients with
inhalational anthrax and GI anthrax, requires intravenous treatment with 2
or 3 drugs: ciprofloxacin 400 mg q 12 h or doxycycline 100 mg q 12 h along
with either penicillin, rifampin, vancomycin, clindamycin, or
clarithromycin.

Pulmonary anthrax is frequently fatal, but survival is possible with early
treatment and intensive pulmonary and circulatory support. Corticosteroids
may be useful but have not been adequately evaluated. If treatment is
delayed (usually because the diagnosis is missed), death is likely.

ANTHRAX DISEASE DESCRIPTION 2
Anthrax-Bacterial infection contracted through inhalation, ingestion or skin
contact with
the live bacteria or its germinated spore form upon ingestion. Incubation
period
ranges from hours to 5 days. Identifying cultures can be obtained from skin
lesions,
sputum and throat swabs or isolated from blood samples. The disease, once
contracted, is not communicable by person to person contact. There is a
very small
chance of any one person coming in contact with this agent, even when found
within
your proximate geographical area. The more important thing to fear with
anthrax is
fear itself. The first thing to do is take some rescue remedy and do not
panic. Contact
your homeopathic practitioner or medical doctor first for advice in the
event of a local
outbreak.

Three forms of the infection occur: cutaneous, gastrointestinal and
pulmonary.

Cutaneous infection usually begins as a red-brown itchy bump that resembles
an
insect bite, enlarging within 1-2 days into a fluid filled vesicle
frequently surrounded by
a red halo and then develops into a painless ulcer, 1-3 cm, with a black
center of
dying tissue. Local lymph gland swelling is common and muscle aches, fever,
fatigue,
headache, nausea and vomiting are possible. Cutaneous anthrax can become
septicemic if untreated.

Gastrointestinal infection produces initial symptoms of nausea, loss of
appetite,
vomiting, and fever. These are followed by abdominal pain, vomiting of
blood and
severe diarrhea. Septicemia with lethal toxicity may result.

Pulmonary infection is characterized by a 1st phase of nonspecific flu-like
symptoms:
mild fever, malaise, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches, a
non-productive
cough and sometimes, a sensation of chest oppression or pressure lasting for
+/- 24
hours. This can be followed by a short asymptomatic phase followed by a 2nd
phase
during which the fever increases and severe shortness of breath and cyanosis
develop. Hypotension with shock/coma, resulting in death, usually occurs
within 24
hours after the onset of the 2nd phase of infection.

Conventional treatment with appropriate antibiotics is most effective with
the
Cutaneous form of anthrax infection. Early detection is essential for
successful
treatment of the Gastrointestinal and Pulmonary forms. Certain antibiotics
can be
used effectively for treatment if taken within 12 hours, before or after,
infection and
prior to symptoms in known exposure. In the pulmonary form of anthrax,
antibiotics
are effective only if used during the 1st phase of infection.

There is considerable controversy surrounding the efficacy and safety of the
active
anthrax vaccination as prevention for the more dangerous pulmonary anthrax
infection. The vaccination should not be used simultaneously with
antibiotics.
Vaccination for anthrax is contraindicated in individuals with a history of
autoimmune
disorders or neurological diseases.

SOME DESCRIPTIONS OF LEADING RX FOR TREATMENT

Listed below are several remedies that can be used before, during and after
exposure
or contraction of the disease. Generally speaking, 30c and 200c are good
potencies
to use, though you do not have to limit yourself to them as both higher and
lower
potencies may be appropriate in certain cases. Consult your homeopathic
practitioner. Unless otherwise indicated below, 30c or 200c potencies can
in most
cases be given +/-3 times daily so long as symptoms seem to improve.

CLINICAL CORTICO - VISCERAL PROTOCOL OR CLINICAL PATHOGENESIS
No experiment of this product is done according to the Hahnemannian
methodology. The description below results out of the clinical experiences
of Lux, Hering, G. A.Weber, Dufresne and Peschier of Geneva.
It was Dr. Kasemann who used first in human medicine, in a case of
gangrene, in the year 1853, then Rau in 1858 for a case of anthrax.
1. Generalities
Here it is the question of a patient who becomes suddenly septicemic
with asthenia, emaciation, intense thirst, developing towards a state of
prostration.
High fever with an anxious state, delirium of nearing death.
2. Nervous System
Adynamic condition, excessive sensitiveness, Delirium.
3. Skin
It is the most characteristic seat of Anthracinum. Ulceration with
intense burning which is intolerable.
At first there is a local indurated inflammation of subcutaneous
tissues. Afterwards a bluish, violet coloured vesicle, which becomes black,
and from which there is an ichorous, foetid and irritant secretion.
The ulceration may end in gangrene, having intense putrid smell.. This
condition is accompanied by corresponding adenopathy with big and painful
lymphatic ganglions.
Complications: There may be hemorrhages of thick black blood rapidly
decomposing.
Evolution: The affection may become rapidly grave and toximic.
4. Digestive System
Hard lignous swelling of parotides and submaxillary glands.
Predominantly right side.
Intense thirst.
Diarrhoea with liquid stools having foetid smell.
POSITIVE DIAGNOSIS
Anthracinum is characterised by the following tripod:
1. Indurated vesicular inflammation.
2. Intensive burning pain.
3. Irritating and foetid secretion.
DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS
Anthracinum may be compared with:
Argentun metallicum: (Dr. O. A.Julian - Etudes homoeopathiques,
cliniques et therapeutiques. Le Francis, Paris 75006).
Sensetive to painful excoriation, prutiginous, burning ending in a
bloody secretion. It is to be used in 10 DH or 7 CH by sub - cutaneous
injections.
--Arsenicum album: Patient, restlessness, anxious, worse, after midnight to
three AM, burning pain, better by heat.
--Tarentula: pain forcing the patient to walk; better by smoking.
--Carbolic acidum: General foetiodness, sensation violent burning pain, but
short lasting.
--Pyrogenium: Horrible putrid smell of the secretions, dissociation of pulse
and temperature, delirium, restlessness, cardiac collapse.
--Lachesis: Great sensitiveness to touch, dark blue infiltration sometimes
livid, with tendency to ulcer and gangrene. Black blood non - coagulating or
coagulating very soon.
It is necessary to mention also Carbo vegetabilis, Crotal., Echinacea,
Euphorbium, Secale.
CLINICAL DIAGNOSIS
Carbuncle: Secretion of foetid pus (Ars. alb.)
Septicemia: Prostration, adynamia, thready pulse, hyperthermia,
collapse, delirium (Pyrogenium).
Gangrenous phlegmon (Ars., Lachesis).
Panaris (whitlow) (Pyrogenium, Tarent).
Furuncles, Anthrax Erysepelas.
Acne.
Inflammation of the parotids and submaxillary glands. Acute Gastro -
enteritis -.
POSOLOGY
Dynamization: 4CH, 5CH, 7 CH, 9 CH.
Lower dilutions are to be repeated many times a day. The high dilutions
7 CH and 9 CH, every 3 to 5 days.
COMMENTARY
Our experience allows us to advise Anthracinum as an important remedy.
This remedy alone is not sufficient to cure some of the affections
mentioned above.
Its action is better when used very early and in high dilution, either
7 CH or 9 CH, one dose every evening, for three days. If accompanied by
Belladonna Hepar sulphur at the beginning of the affection its action
becomes much better; afterwards with Tarentula and Arsenic album. All these
medicines are to be used in medium dilutions: 4 CH or CH.
Finally I associate it with Argentum metallicum, 5 CH.
To end, here is a case by M. Denis (Annales Hom. fr., No. 3, p. 249,
1968).
A case of Furuncle
In 1962, a patient of about 50 years old came to consult us for a
generalized furuncle, suffering from the age of 25. Every thing was tried;
Vaccine, Sulfamides, Antibiotics.
Lastly O. T.A. has caused an amelioration of the furunculosis but
having found that he is becoming deaf an ENT was consulted who advised to
stop O. T.A.
Blood analysis shows glycemia to 2 gm. traces of albumin and glucose in
the urine.
The patient was in full explosion of furuncles; a dose of Anthracinum
30 K and Uranium nitricum 4 CH and because of the pains Tarentula cubensis
4ch.
Spectacularly, the furuncles diminished. A dose of Lachesis 30 was used
basing on the modalities, then a dose of Lycopodium 30k. These two remedies
brought a great amelioration. The patient told us that he was suspected of
syphilis and was treated and that since then the furuncles appeared.
Serology done several times was negative. Nevertheless Lyesinum 200 was
prescribed without any affect. The patient is continuing Uranium nitricum 4
CH and is at present in perfect condition.
We are following up the patient and perhaps later on we will be able to
give you more information.

===============
ANTHRACINUM can be used when word of an outbreak occurs in one¹s proximate
geographical area. A healthy adult may take one dose of 30c (or whichever
potency
is available/selected) once a day for up to three days, then stop. Children
may take
one dose once. This should help protect from contracting the disease and/or
mitigate
its effects. Debilitated individuals, those with compromised immune
systems, or people
being treated for a sickness should contact their practitioner before taking
additional medicines

Keynotes: Septic fever with chills, and painful, hard swelling of lymph
glands.
Black/blue blisters. Succession of boils. Intolerable burning with
offensive pus.
Sloughing ulcers and gangrene. Black blood oozes from all orifices.
Restlessness.
Exhaustion. Excessive thirst but can hardly swallow.

Guiding symptoms: Terrible, intolerable burning, as if on fire; with great
exhaustion.
Succession of boils. Large boils and malignant ulcers with discharge of
offensive pus.
Gangrene. Black or blue blisters that slough and ulcerate with rapid
decomposition.
Septic fever with sweat all over and great weakness. Rapid loss of strength
with
sinking pulse, delirium and fainting. Hard, stoney swelling of painful
lymph glands.
Severe pain in limbs and joints with spasms, especially of upper limbs.
Black blood
oozes from any orifice. Vomiting with chill followed by painless, bloody
diarrhea.

LEADING SYMPTOMS
M Similar to Natrum muriaticum, but chillier and liking the sun.*
"No hardening around the grief, as you might expect to see in
Nat-m., Ign., Aur., or Caust. Instead, you could say they gave in to it or
softened around it. After taking Anthracinum, the'soft tissue' surrounding
the grief broke down, much like Sil. promotes actual physical suppuration.
But, in these cases, the discharge took place on the emotional level. The
grief then becomes identified, processed, accepted for what it represents,
and finally expelled. What parallels this so beautifully is the physical
analogue - the cyst, the tumour, or the carbuncle hat opens and relieves
itself." [Baker]
M Love of the sun; skin problems may be ameliorated by the sun.
M Fear of being alone.
M Anxiety about others, esp. husband.
M Appearance.
"They are fast-moving people, not impatient, but quick to grasp.
They may be sweet, unassertive, very sensitive, and proper. They may not
have a very strong sense of themselves. They lack self-confidence, can be
hard on themselves [self-reproach], and need to be in control." [Baker]
M Silent grief.
"As is the case with Nat-m., Anthr. holds so much grief deep
inside that it can be seen as a remedy with the most silent grief, with the
most serious emotional injury which also remains deep inside. It is as if
all emotional and mental traumas of Anthr. have been encapsulated in a huge
dark tumour." [Vithoulkas]
M Traumatism.
"One difference with Nat-m. is that Anthr. does not seem to be
conscious of the trauma. It is as if he accepts it and thinks that it is
inherent to his existence. He will never discuss it with anybody."
[Vithoulkas]
G Carbuncles.
"In carbuncle, another form of connective tissue inflammation,
Rhus is indicated in the beginning, when the pains are intense and the
affected parts are dark red. If given early, Rhus may abort the whole
trouble. If not, you may have to resort later to Arsenicum, Carbo-v., or
even Anthracinum." [Farrington]

HISTORY
We owe to J. W. Lux the first preparation and the therapeutic use of
Anthracinum. He made mention of it in 1833 in his Isopathick der
Contagionen. Towards 1831 it was Charles Hering who communicated, perhaps
first before Lux, the use of Anthracinum. This Nosode was prepared by Dr. G.
A.Weber (not to be confounded with Pharmacien Weber of Paris, as it seems to
have been done by Dr. P. Schmidt of Geneva) who made an alcoholic tincture
with the spleen of a sheep, suffering from carbuncle, a process mentioned
also be Clarke.
The preparation of Lux was dynamized up to the 30th.
But the process of preparing has changed in course of time.
Lux reports in the third book, page 83 of Zooiasis an observation of
Hahnemann 1834, regarding a worker of a farm, affected by a malignant
anthrax of both the hands whom he gave two drops of the 30c, to an other
worker of the same farm who had only two pustules, Hahnemann gave only one
drop. Both men were cured.

Destructive impulses with erratic behavior; hurried. Refuses to eat; loss
of appetite
with intense thirst. Music excites to dance and then relieves symptoms.
Extreme
sexual excitement. Better in open air, rubbing affected parts, relaxation
and sweating
and with warm water. Worse with motion, touch of affected parts, change of
weather,
in cold and damp, noises, sex, night and evening. Worse periodically-at the
same
hour, yearly and on right side.

=============
PYROGENIUM can be used in cases where there is septic infection with fever.

Keynotes: Septic states. High fevers with bruised soreness-bed feels too
hard.
Sweat does not lower the fever. Restlessness. Palpitations with rapid
pulse. Horribly
offensive discharges. Recurrent abscesses with pain and violent burning.

Guiding symptoms: Chill, beginning in the back between the scapula and felt
in the
bones and limbs so that the bed feels hard. Rapidly rising high fevers
(103-106
degrees) where sweating does not cause a fall in temperature. Frequent
urination
prior to fever. Pulse abnormally rapid, out of proportion to temperature.
Palpitations
with distinct awareness of a tired heart. Horribly offensive discharges
from all affected
parts. Recurrent painful abscesses with foul discharge of much pus from
skin or
lungs. Tongue is fiery red, dry, flabby and pus-like, sweetish taste in
mouth with
nausea. Painless diarrhea or vomiting is brownish and offensive.
Constipation from
impaction of feces in fevers with painless, black carrion-like stools. No
appetite or
thirst. Full of anxiety, active brain resulting in inability to sleep.
Better from heat, hot
bath or drinks, changing position, walking or hard rocking. Worse from
cold, damp,
sitting or moving the eyes.

============
ECHINACEA can be used for cases of septic infections usually of a lesser
degree than
those of Pyrogenium.

Keynotes: Low septic fevers with irregular chills and nausea. Swollen
lymph glands.
Sore throat. Aching in limbs. Weariness. Boils, abscesses and gangrene
with slow
suppuration. Discharges yellow, foul smelling and followed by blood.
Slowness in
every action.

Guiding symptoms: Boils, abscesses and gangrene with glandular inflammation
and
slowness to suppurate. Low septic fever with irregular chilliness, nausea
and sweat
primarily on upper part of the body. Slowness in every action-speaking,
thinking,
walking. Headache with flushing of face. Aching in limbs with general
weariness and
coldness. Discharges tend to be yellowish and followed by red blood.
Nausea with
sour belching. Intermittent abdominal pain followed by diarrhea. Mouth is
dry with a
bad taste. Tingling of the tongue with a sore throat, constant clearing of
mucous.

or bending
double in abdominal pain. Worse from cold air, after eating, in evening,
and after

Anthrax 1957 Outbreak- New Hampshire, USA

...WND investigates a 1957 outbreak of anthrax in a textile mill that
happened to be the site of Army experiments on a vaccine for the disease.
Tomorrow's installment examines the federal investigation into the
post-9/11 anthrax attacks.

One day in early September 1957, Antonio Jette came home from his job at
the Arms Textile Mill in Manchester, N.H., and uncharacteristically went
to bed early. He told his wife, Anna, that he was tired, wasn't in the
least hungry and felt like he was coming down with a cold.

The next morning, Antonio said he was feeling better. It was Saturday and
he and Anna drove to Vermont, four hours away, to attend the Rutland
State Fair. It was an event they had been looking forward to for months.
But as they were entering the fair's gate, Antonio turned to Anna and
said they had to go back home. "I'm sorry," he told Anna, "I feel really
sick." On the way home, Antonio had several fits of dry coughing and he
said that his chest hurt.

The following day, Sunday, Antonio and Anna went to church. After
returning home, Antonio again said that he felt tired. He told Anna he
was going to lie down for a couple of hours. An hour later Anna checked
on Antonio and found him soaked with perspiration and mumbling
incoherently. She took his temperature, saw that it was 103 degrees
Fahrenheit and called the family's doctor. The doctor gave Antonio a shot
of penicillin for what he thought was a bronchial infection. He told Anna
to keep Antonio in bed for the next few days.

Two hours later, Anna found Antonio's temperature had risen to 104, and
she was unable to wake him up. With the help of neighbors, Anna took her
husband to a nearby hospital. Doctors at St. Joseph's Hospital in Nashua
found Antonio's temperature to be 105 degrees. His breathing was rapid
and shallow. Rales were audible over both his lungs. Tests revealed blood
in his lumbar region. Doctors told Anna that they thought her husband had
suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. His chances for recovery didn't look
good, they said.

Antonio never regained consciousness. He died the next morning, Sept. 6,
at 6 a.m., the same time that every morning he walked to church before
heading off to work at the mill.

Anna was stunned by her husband's sudden death. He was only 49 years old.
She had never seen Antonio sick before. She didn't know what to tell her
seven children. Anna buried her husband three days after he died. The
church was full of Antonio's friends and relatives, but nobody from
management at the Arms Textile Mill attended Antonio's funeral. Nobody,
at the time, told Anna that the Arms Textile Mill was the site of tests
being conducted by the Biological Warfare Laboratories at Fort Detrick,
Md. It would be another 45 years before Anna ever heard about the tests.

Albert Langlois was 16 years younger than his co-worker Antonio Jette.
Albert had been employed at the Arms Mill for only nine weeks before he
became sick one day while on the job. It was Oct. 30, a little over seven
weeks after Jette had died. Albert tried to keep working, but the next
day he could hardly stand up. He was so thirsty and drank so much water
that he vomited. "I've just got the flu," he told his wife Stella. "It'll
go away soon."

Albert's doctor visited him at home on Oct. 31 and diagnosed Asian
influenza. The doctor gave Stella eight tablets of oral penicillin for
her husband. Two days later, Albert seemed better, but the following day
he complained of trouble breathing. He was unable to hold any liquids and
his jaw clamped tightly closed. He thrashed about in bed and began to
frantically rub his legs.

Albert was rushed to the Manchester Veteran's Administration Hospital.
Doctors there thought that he possibly was suffering a laryngeal
obstruction. Albert died less than an hour later. Like Anna Jette, Stella
Langlois was shocked by the suddenness of her husband's death. And like
Anna, nobody told Stella anything about the Army tests that were underway
at the Arms Mill.

A year ago, following the tragic events of Sept. 11, five people in the
United States died as a result of a series of lethal anthrax-laden
letters sent through the mail. Forty-five years ago this month, four
other people, all workers at the Arms Textile Mill, including Antonio
Jette and Albert Langlois, died in what the Centers for Disease Control
call "America's only anthrax epidemic."

A central activity at the Arms Textile Mill throughout the 1950s was the
processing of goat hair imported from Pakistan, Iraq and Iran. The
refined hair was used in the lining of expensive men's suits and
overcoats manufactured at the mill. The Arms Mill, in 1957, employed 632
workers spread throughout a complex of large red brick buildings located
on the banks of the Merrimack River and near the edge of downtown
Manchester, N.H.

At the same time as the deadly Arms Mill outbreak the manufacturing plant
was the site for tests using an experimental vaccine. Tests on the mill
workers who were considered at
risk for anthrax due to handling animal products such as goat and sheep
hair had begun quietly in May 1955 and were sponsored by the Biological
Warfare Laboratories of the U.S. Chemical Corps at Fort Detrick. The
prototype vaccine tested at the mill had been developed by Fort Detrick
scientist Dr. George G. Wright. The vaccine was briefly produced a few
years later by the pharmaceutical company Merck Sharp & Dohme, today
Merck and Co. Inc. Company head George Wilhelm Merck was a principal
advocate for biological warfare in the 1940s and 1950s and was a founder
of Fort Detrick. Wright's vaccine is essentially the same serum
administered today to American troops and others at risk of anthrax.

Nearly a half-century beyond the Arms Mill outbreak, no definitive
scientific explanation or cause for the epidemic has been discovered.
Scientists at UCLA's Department of Epidemiology and other research
centers have speculated that "the circumstantial evidence suggested a
relationship to a particular batch of goat hair." However, because no
samples of that animal hair exist today, no up-to-date testing can be
accomplished, and results from tests conducted in 1957 and 1958 remain
inconclusive. Further compounding matters despite that the animal hair
in question was imported from thousands of miles away by means considered
antiquated and unsafe today is that there were no cases of any type of
anthrax ever reported or recorded along the long route to New Hampshire.

Equally perplexing to many who have studied the outbreak is that, despite
the severity of the epidemic not only did four workers die, but an
additional 21 workers came down with cutaneous anthrax the mill never
ceased operations, even temporarily, during the outbreak and continued
operating uninterrupted until 1968 when it went out of business for
financial reasons. In grim testimony to the virulent nature of the
anthrax that infected the mill, two years prior to its closing, in 1966,
a man working in a machinery shop across from the mill died of inhalation
anthrax. New Hampshire health officials at the time conjectured that
lethal spores remaining from 1957 migrated from the Arms buildings
through a shared ventilation system between the two businesses.

Following this additional death over 10 years past the epidemic and the
mill's closing, state health officials sealed the mill while trying to
decide how to make the site environmentally safe. After an expensive
decontamination process in 1971, after which the buildings still tested
positive for anthrax, the entire ....

Anthrax is used in biological warfare. In 1979 an outbreak of anthrax
poisoning in Sverdlovsk, USSR, was attributed to an accident at a Soviet
germ-warfare factory. Over 1000 thousand people were reported to have died
from it. The Soviets claimed that the epidemic was caused by
anthrax-infected meat. (Vermeulen)

A possibly off-target tangent, this segment of Andy's wonderful
offering brings to mind (I think??) some of the exotic and deadly flus
(and others), doesn't it?
Shannon
Initial symptoms of pulmonary anthrax are insidious and resemble
influenza.
Fever increases, and within a few days, severe respiratory distress
develops, followed by cyanosis, shock, and coma. Severe hemorrhagic
necrotizing lymphadenitis develops and spreads to the adjacent
mediastinal
structures. Serosanguineous transudation, pulmonary edema, and pleural
effusion occur. Hemorrhagic meningoencephalitis and/or GI anthrax may
develop. Lung x-ray may show diffuse patchy infiltration; the
mediastinum is
widened because of enlarged hemorrhagic lymph nodes.

In GI anthrax, the released toxin induces a hemorrhagic necrosis
extending
to the draining mesenteric lymph nodes. Septicemia with potentially
lethal
toxicity ensues.
