Rubric help -- holding breath

Hi.

I have a client who complains that he keeps holding his breath unconsciously. He finally feels a "slight suffactive" feeling, and then realizes he needs to breathe out so that he can get more air into his lungs. No sighing. I've looked at "respiration-- intermittent," "respiration - catching" -- are there any other possibilities that strike anyone?

Try -sensation as if he were holding his breath--- Drosera
If you look at HARoberts there are many symptoms around this same
symptom-Something in chest prevented exhalation- Dros,Exhalation
prevented by talking or coughing -Dros,air were withheld when
talking or coughing - Dros
Another one is Oxalic acid - he made a sudden effort to relieve
himself be expelling air from his lungs...

Just out of curiosity - is he anxious? Has any aerophagy? Is this
holding breath happens all the time or under any special
circumstances- how about while sleep? Wakes up with want of breath?
what happens during exercise or running or bathing(showers).. When
is his breathing normal?

Hi Rosemary,

Apart from the aforementioned Generals, breathing, holding the breath: dros,
Kali_n, led, meny, merc, Spig (from Synthesis) overall - I wonder 'why'
also. In my experience it starts from a shock or frightening event, when it literally
takes the breath away. Upper respiratory breathing is associated with extreme
anxiety leading to breath-holding, but can also take place when concentration
needed - as in fine manual work, etc. Important to define what it relates to, as
Hahnemannian points out.

Thanks! Darn! That should be the rubric, but it's not the remedy. I'm leaning toward Hydrogen for this client -- total difficulty finding himself in contrast to the wide universe of energy, along with being awakened from sleep every night by restlessness in his legs. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions -- as always it's very useful to learn some of the treasures in the Repertories. )

I would call this suffocative air hunger and because this is a keynote
of Sulphur (both when asleep as in sleep apnoea and when awake) you
could use the rubric 'breathing, difficult, from oppression in
epigastrium' if it fits but it does call in to question why the person
is doing this in the first place. Best wishes, Joy
