Arnica prophylactically

Post by Peter Graham »

A friend of mine, a homeopath and home-birthing midwifefor 25 years, now in the hospital system is sick to death of women turning up with their homeopathic first aid kits and taking Arnica, advised by their homeopaths, before the delivery.
Her experience is it retards the delivery. Invaluable after the actual birth.
Michele.

So do not give anything unless indicated in this situation. In an
epidemic though like the threatened flu would it not be reasonable to
use a prophylactic remedy, Jean

If you are in the midst of an epidemic and you have several cases all
coming through with the same sx and they are responding already to a
known similar rx then yes there is a situation where you could
prescribe prophylactically. Best wishes, Joy

In order to do proper prophylaxis for surgery, you need to know 2 aspects:
the nature of the surgery and the action of the remedy at all levels, but in
this situation mostly physical.

1. Nature of the surgery: like always in homeopathy (and medicine in
general) if you use the wrong remedy you will have no results or bad results

You might remember a few months ago, an article was published with the use
of Arnica in carpal tunnel surgery. This is a typical case. Carpal tunnel
surgery is, and has to be, bloodless; it is done with a tourniquet in an
exsanguinated operating field and lots of time is spent dealing with every
little bleeder. No wonder Arnica did not work, there was no bruising
whatsoever. The indicated remedy, if any, should have been Hypericum in case
of nerve injury and to help the nerve repair.
The same goes with general surgery: many times there will be bleeding,
bruising, etc,.... good indication for Arnica. But here comes point 2

2. Action of remedy: I see Arnica often used as a one size fits all. Big
mistake. For example we all know the action of Bellis P is similar to that
of Arnica but works a lot better in deep abdominal and pelvic surgery. Hence
its real indication in gynaecological surgery, prostate, kidney and other
retroperitoneal procedures like aortic aneurysm repair.
But that is not all. The study I mentioned previously gave Arnica 3 x/day
for a week before surgery: this is asking for trouble, as obviously you can
create a proving, hence MORE bleeding. The way to go is ONE dose before the
surgery, one dose when out of O.R., then see what is needed.
There is more: many people report that taking Arnica the proper way before
dental procedure helps but taking Hypericum makes things very difficult, as
the anaesthetic does not hold............no wonder if one looks at
prophylactic homeopathy as informing the physiology about how to react to
what is going to happen: Hypericum is all about repairing or preventing
damage to the nerves, so as soon as an anaesthetic substance arrives either
locally close to the nerve or generally in the brain, it is actively
counteracted because anaesthesia is nothing else than controlled
intoxication!!!

With Arnica (or Bellis...) it is all about preventing bleeding, swelling and
inflammation: that is why it works when taken properly.

So for me, the answer to that very heated discussion is again about
knowledge: to know what is involved in a procedure and to know what the
remedy will do: that is the only way to properly practice prophylactic
homeopathy.............recipes and passepartout formulas do not work........

Snip.............
The way to go is ONE dose before the
surgery, one dose when out of O.R., then see what is needed.
-------------------------------------------------

I gave Arnica prophylactically to a patient who was to undergo a face-lift.
One dose before was given, on the day of surgery, and she was brought back
into the ward where there were 4 other ladies who had had the procedure that
morning.

My patient had almost no swelling or bruising --- and it was so dramatically
different to the other ladies in the room that they did not believe she had
undergone the same procedure. What was really missing were the bruising and
swelling around the eyes. This seemed to be attributable to the Arnica
before.

I gave one more dose the next day, and the healing was so quick the doctor
was impressed, as she was a 70yr old and he was used to seeing it
differently, for weeks longer.

My client was very pleased.

I have no trouble with using Arnica in this kind of situation -- as Dr. J.
points out above, it has to be relevant to the procedure being performed.

One point of prophylactic use, is that one knows what is lurking, that the
person could be exposed to, and that could be extrapolated in my opinion to
a known set of symptoms of a surgical procedure, not just an acute epidemic,
and in the same vein, I could see how common chronic disease symptoms could
be seen as an epidemic of sorts as well, and could be treated with a genius
epdemicus.

I guess, we homoeopathic folks follow the general pattern of society's bell
curve composition, in that we all see things from different vantage points,
therefore cannot really expect those in different positions to see it from
our own. I can accept that!

Best

Robyn

Yes, thankyou! I wonder, does anyone have thoughts as to why arnica
before childbirth might impede the process? I can't think why it would
be more problematic before this, than before surgery? (Could bleeding
and/or inflammation be necessary to the process?)

Dear Joe

Thank you for this post.

If I remember correctly this experiment was reported in The Guardian in UK
by Prof Ezra Ernst - Chair of Complimentary Medicine at Exeter University. A
great Wally! (he writes weekly for the Guardian.

I wrote to him and asked on what basis was it decided that the patient
should be given this amount of Arnica before the operations and who was the
Homoeopath who advised them on such practice.
No reply of course.
