Iron in infant formula

Can anyone give me some information on iron in infant formula?

I know iron is deficient in breast milk. It seems to me for the million
or so years of human evolution if humans needed iron in breast milk, it
would be there.

Here in the USA it is getting to be impossible for people to purchase
infant formula without the iron. Many people in the USA do not nurse
their children, and most of those that do nurse, do so for a very short
period of time.

I have seen numerous cases of infants with gastric disturbances, gas,
constipation, colic pains, etc. Most of these babies are on a formula
that contains iron.

I have suggeste an alternative formula, one person went so far as to tell
me her pediatrician told her her infant's gastric disturbances were from
the iron in the formula, but he didn't want her to change formulas.

Is there any reason an infant needs iron? Why would they put iron in
formula anyway? Am I wrong? Is there a purpose for this practice?
Between the children's innoculations and the formula - I am not sure I
like what I am seeing at all.

Any enlightenment you could offer me would be appreciated,
