Siddha and Ayurveda as Homeopathy
-
differ
Mostly I have never uesd the crude doses - I know only the indications
In Siddha lots of medicines involve metals and their various
combinations. Even though Ayurveda does this too Siddha has much more
metallic preparations and their calcides, sulphides and oxides etc.
Many medicines in Siddha can only be given in minute quantities –
like touching it with a pin head and mixing it with milk or honey
etc. These go by the names Bhasmas (and Chendurs). The Bhasmas are
prepared by mixing the original metallic compounds with different
herb juices and fused under typical high temperatures. One combustion
like this is 1 puta ( let us say 1st potency – remember the medicine
is being diluted with herbal juices). They take this combusted
product and put it thru the SAME process – dilute and combust – this
is 2 puta . The dilution is not mere dilution but grinding it for so
much time and it is almost like succussions. Many products go upto 20
puta … I have seen products that have gone thru 1000 puta. ( how
about 1M?) Strikingly even in Siddha they say the more putas the more
powerful the medicine – Note that the original metallic compound has
not been replenished – it is progressively being diluted and
combusted. So ultimately in Bhasmas you get a product that has gone
thru this process and potentized.
The problem is many of these are highly dangerous if not prepared
properly and if taken more than advised and I have seen people ending
with Kidney and other disorders after taking improperly prepared
medicines. The medicines are improperly prepared because of taking
short cuts in preparing, no standardized method of production is
available etc. Usually each one of these medicines has multiple
indications. Many times these medicines are given with different
vehicles for different indications like milk or honey or butter or
various herbal juices. When I found the significance of these
vehicles – these vehicles by themselves can work against the
indicated disease… for example a medicine XYZ indicated for
multiple diseases – will be given with Terminalia chebula for gastric
ulcer ( Terminalia chebula itself is good for gastric ulcer) and with
Syzigium jambol for Diabetes ( Syz.jam itself being good for
diabetes) So this is almost like the plant vehicle is being made more
powerful by adding the Metallic preparation. French homeopathic
Drainage and Canalization kind of is equivalent.
When I read Siddha and Ayurvedic Materia medica I was surprised to
see so many commonalities between Homeopathic and Siddha materia
medica. Also the process of potentization and minimality of the dose
all gave me additional food for thought.
Because I could see in general the indications were also similar I
wanted to potentize these medicines and raise them to 3x or 6x and
use them. I did that also. This is still a continuing process and I
am still dabbling some. I had not used much with my patients because
not many of them could be convinced. I have used it myself for
certain problems and my friends have used. I have given these to some
siddha doctors for using it for their patients where they were afraid
of giving the original medicine because of potential problems.
One way of individualizing I did even with these is by taking the
indications and creating a concomitant picture out of it…for example
a medicine indicated for diarrhea, diabetes, asthma, phlegmatic
diseases etc. would be indicated in Diabetes with diarrhea, Diabetes
with asthma and catarrhal diseases etc. and we had a repertory like
this worked out for native medicines in asthma ( with concomitants)
….Lot of interesting work but I have put it in hold for now …

Re: Siddha and Ayurveda as Homeopathy
Is there a Siddha equivalent for provings? That, based on your interesting description, appears as though it may be one major difference as compared to homeopathy. Rosemary

Re: Siddha and Ayurveda as Homeopathy
No there are no provings - As I have mentioned in one of my previous
posts - that is the one difference... Similial Simibus Curentur was
known even before Hahnemann. But his greatness lies in giving us a
systematic way of approaching it and to implement it in a much more
precise manner...
Siddha and Ayurveda have had no "homeopathic" provings and they are
supposed to be gifts of Gods and the work of Siddhas ( people who
have realized the TRUTH)...who have become one with nature... But I
have seen time and time again how effective and powerful that
medicine is - excepting that now many of the works are lost and many
of the remaining are undecipherable being couthed in mystical terms-
but there are good works still..

Thank you, that is fascinating!
How is the "combustion" done?
So the doses are already minute, but by potentizing also you can
presumably eliminate (at least largely) the risk of toxic reactions?

I suppose that is what happens as meanings and contexts change, but the
old meanings are insufficiently passed on. (Or perhaps some were
*intended* to be only reminders for a person whose major study has been
one-to-one oral, with a master?)
When homeopathy is 4,000 years old, who knows which of our present
works will still be usable!

In olden days and even now some traditionalists would use cow dung
patties to burn... the dimensions of the patties and the number of
patties everything is defined in ancient works;they also use dry wood -
once again what kinds of wood should be used has been described
because different kinds of wood burn at different rates
Now a days big manufacturers use burners / stoves to do the work -
I started potentizing - to eliminate toxicity as much as possible -
much for the same reason that Hahnemann started dilutions -

Re: Siddha and Ayurveda as Homeopathy
Hello,
I have studied Aryurveda, Urani and Siddha medicine in India as part of
my study of yoga. Although one hears legends of alchemy in middle age
European and Chinese medicine, using mercury, sulphur, gold, etc.,
is living tradition in India. The use of the ashes of poisonous and
nutritional metal and minerals started in the Tantric yoga schools as a
means of helping rejuvenate the body and increase the effects of yoga
asanas, pranayama and meditation. All of this together may assist in
attaining "kaya siddhi", which is a the pure yoga body. The old classical
Aryur Vedic texts do not contain the use of ashes of these metals. Most of
the yoga alchemy is centered on Mercury and Sulphur, which is symbolized as
the sperm of Shiva and blood of Shakti. Mercury, of course, is very toxic.
Nevertheless, the alchemists claim that in the form to the oxide-ashes it
is does not to accumulate in the body. References to these metals are found
in yoga text but usually in symbolic form so that only those that knew the
oral lineage could understand the various uses.
There has been quite a bit of modern research with these metal ash
substances that claim that the oxides do not interact with tissues and are
eliminated. They say these medicines only acts as catalysts and can reach
the level of nadis, prana and charkras, which cannot be done by ordinary
medicines. The major yogic rejuvenation medicine is called Siddha
Makarawaj. Another is called Vatchitramani Rasa. These medicines are taken
in the winter for no more than one month at special times with a specific
diet and a course of asana, pranayama and meditiation. In the old days one
went into full retreat so all one's energy was focused on the goal. They
are supposed to transform the 7 dhatus (constituents of the body), increase
and balance the vital energy, and help in the attunement of higher
consciousness. The Siddhi school of medicine is found in S. India. They
some minerals and metals that are not burned to make the oxide-ashes. Some
of their mixtures look rather toxic and wonder about safety issues?
Hippocrates wrote that similars and opposites both cure depending on the
situation. Hippocrates individualize his prescriptions and used small doses
of single remedies not mixtures. He appears to have used the more heroic
medicines by similars (like hellebores in convulsions, etc) and opposites
for physical effects like covering a person who is cold, giving water to
the dehydrate, and giving nutritious food to the under nourished. His sons
and grandsons, however, decided to make a family business out of the old
Asclepiads name and started to make up "Hippocratic mixtures" and sell
patent medicines. I guess the money first motive is not only a modern
maxim? Anyway, many persons do not understand how much of the basis of
homeopathy if found in the work of the Greek naturalists, especially
Hippocrates. This includes the ideas of the aetiological constellation, the
constitutional nature of the diseases, the four temperaments and their
mixtures, the theory of the vital force and the terms miasms and psora.
Ayruvedic texts also discuss the use of similars and opposites very
clearly. The ancients were aware of the power of similar remedies. One of
the ways of learning the powers of medicines was to test it on oneself. In
the olden times this was one of the ways of training students. It must also
be noted that Emporer Shen Nung of Ancient China was reputed to have test
100s of medicines on his body. He is depicted as a wearing leaves and vines
for clothes although he was the King. It is said that the basic medicines
of Traditional Chinese Medicine were all "proved" by Shen Nung and the
volunteers in his court. Legend has it that Shen Nung finally turned green
and die during his experiments. The basis of many of the mixtures found in
TCM are constructed on similars. Often the master ingredient of a Chinese
mixture is homeopathic to the symptoms it treats, but because of the
physical nature of the remedy, other ingredients are added to balance the
primary substance.
Some acupuncture techniques are also very homeopathic. For example, I
once cured a severe uterine hemorrhage in childbirth by taking 1 tiny drop
of blood from the big toe and made the birth painless with acupuncture by
causing a little pain at the right spots. I have also used acupuncture
anesthesiology in major surgeries but that's another story! Hua To used to
used cannabis wine and acupuncture and did major surgeries. It is said he
experimented with organ transplants. He was boiled in oil at around100
because he would not become the doctor of a war lord. Unfortunately, his
wife threw away all his anatomical drawings and wittings and many of this
precise methods were lost although the Huatojagi points are still in use.
So we can see that the ancient world was not unaware of the use of
similars and proving remedies as well as many other interesting methods.
What Hahnemann introduced was potency, wh9ich makes everything in nature a
potential remedy without any danger of toxicity. That is truly
extraordinary gift. Before this the use of similar was much more dangerous.
When it comes to detailed knowledge of the vital force and the occult
anatomy the Chinese and Indians understand areas Hahnemann did not. For
example, they have methods to supply direct control of the instinctive
vital force and control the autonomic activities of the human organism and
use this energy attain higher states of consciousness.
Gosh, I hope I don't get in trouble for speaking as if the ancients may
have known more about certain subjects than modern science. The truth is,
however, there are some areas where THEY DID.
Sincerely yours, David Little

Re: Siddha and Ayurveda as Homeopathy
Dear David,
That was fascinating.
Similars in Chinese medicine is not clear to me because at least in Bensky and Gamble's collection of formulas, similars seem to be the mainstay. Also, everything is given in heroic doses so I was not expecting similars to necessarily work. Maybe I should be looking elsewhere for the use of similars in Chinese medicine. Perhaps one could say, use of tonifiers are based on similarity. Is that what you mean?
I just got done with what recently has become a daily ritual of meditation and generalized moxa heat over stiff joints and stagnant qi. With the help of the moxa (mogusa in Japanese) my lotus pose is feeling very good. And yes, you can make such rituals meditations. Now I know I am in good company.
Blessings,
Ellen Madono

Hello David,
I've studied the layers in the vital force in connection with the chakra's
I see a sort of connection to the 3 lower chakra's and the Hahnemannian
miasms.
It seems that Syphilis miasm concentrates mostly on the level of the Root
chakra, Sycosis to the Spleen chakra and Psora to the Solar plexus chakra.
The pattern when separated/ isolated from the complete aura would present a
more physical based energy pattern, which we could treat with a separate
remedy.
The higher chakra's seem to represent a more individual energy pattern,
which we also may treat with a separate remedy.
Another strategy would be to find one remedy that covers the current
individual part and miasm (the present synergetic pattern).
Have you done similar studies?
Kind regards, Piet

Dear David, you have an amazing repertoire of knowlege of Indian and
Chinese (and Greek) historical medicine.
The INdian and CHinese cultures (4000 years ago) in the Vedic period
were very, very scientifically advanced (much more than today) - it is
a known historical fact. Then apparently came some great descruction
that wiped them out ... its a mystery what that was! IN India (now in
Pakistan) Mohenjo Daro excavations bear that testimony. So MOdern
Science couldn't get you into any trouble!
Thanks for broadening our perspective.
