mineral discussion - Manganum for eczema

Post by Rosemary C Hyde, Ph.D., C.C.H. »

Hi, all. I was really fascinated by Robin's Materia Medica entry for Manganum in his book on treating eczema (Logan, The Homeopathic Treatment of Eczema). I wonder if he'd be willing to share a Manganum experience with us as part of this mineral discussion?

Rosemary

Whether he does or not it is important to know that manganum is an
important trace element - very important in the utilisation of the B
Vitamins and enzyme activity, cell production, growth, sexual function.
Deficiency will cause many skin conditions especially scaling,
splitting or cracked skin, chronic eczema (especially in growing
children if the diet is poor) - and a lot more besides skin conditions.

Hi,

Out of interest, in the Readers Digest "Foods that Harm, Foods that
Heal", there is an interesting 'fact', I quote -

Manganum aceticum is one of Dr. Ramakrishnan's leading remedies for
Parkinson's disease. The leading indicators for it, in his practice, are
lots of involuntary laughing and weeping. There are pronouced, vigorous
tremors and marked festination (stooping forward on walking), with a
corresponding tendency to fall backward.

Here are some more of my notes on it:

CYCLE: Soreness/bitterness from domination >> brooding >> anxious
restlessness >> weakness >>
paralysis >> relief from lying down (suppression of self >>

CHARACTERISTICS: SYCOTIC & PSORIC, syphilitic, TUBERCULAR. Slow, gradual
process of
deterioration, like arthritis, muscular dystrophy. Manganese breaks down
the blood corpuscles and lays
the foundation for tuberculosis, especially in the larynx. Similar to
Arg-met., Phos., Graph. and Sulph., in
its underlying tendency to tuberculosis. TB that begins in larynx. Affects
EARS, LARYNX, JOINTS, and
SHIN BONES. This remedy is most useful in recurrent complaints, and is
hardly ever seen in first
attacks. Of great use in patients who are gradually declining. Syphilitic
and chlorotic patients with
general anemia and paralytic symptoms often are benefited by this drug.
Manganum is like iron in his
effects on blood, but in nervous sxs is more like Cuprum, Arg-met., Zincum;
if sxs agree, it may be used in
place of Ferrum in chlorosis. SHY CHILD of DOMINEERING PARENTS; shyness +
bitterness.
NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS, PARKINSON'S, M.S.

SANKARAN: Ferrum series. Main theme is feeling of being attacked and
needing to defend oneself.
Feels dominated or suppressed and wants to retaliate, but is powerless. Has
to suppress his anger and
violence; he puts up a wall, becomes embittered, hateful, revengeful. Finds
relief only from the saddest music.
Child becomes anxious, tense, jittery; discontented with self and bitter
toward parents. Not as extreme as
Aurum or Mercurius; homeopath doesn't find themes of suicide or revolution;
instead finds suppression: Px
is reserved and his feelings pent up. Feels harassed & has to defend
himself. Can be shy, reserved, quiet,
morose, or strongly defensive and domineering (because dominated in the
past).
Peace,
Cinnabar

Hi Joy,

Seems Readers Digest should update their information sources a tad!
:-)
Here's a snippet from the url you sent.

In the organic farming sector Mark Purdey from the UK has put forward a link
between Manganese toxicity and the development of Mad Cow disease, see the
article at http://www.mindfully.org/Farm/Mad-Cow-Mark-Purdey.htm
In later articles he has extended his theory to links with low levels of
Copper if I remember correctly.

Thanks for this Jon, which is fascinatingly horrible. We already know
that Manganum has parkinsons disease, motor paralysis and paraplegia in
its clinical application and has a special affinity to the blood,
mucous membranes, the bones, the liver, cerebrospinal system and the
skin - so this is not surprising really. Very interesting.
