sleeplessness in child
sleeplessness in child
Hi,
I would ask your opinion on the following case:
Child (girl 2 1/2 years old) does not want to go to sleep at night
and wakes up several times, asking for her mother. One of the
parents always goes over to the child. She wants them to sing a song
or play with the dolls. If they do not go over immediatly, she will
get very upset - screaming, kicking and so on.
Sleeping problems were always there (also when she was a baby)
Also in daytime she could have temper tantrums if things did not go
the way she wanted.
In the afternoon the child sleeps for about 2 1/2 hours and they
do not have this problem.
The mother had problems getting pregnant. The first time she had an
extopic pregnancy, and they removed a oviduct. Then she took clomiet
(chlomifeen) to promote ovulation. After this she had two
miscarriages and also from the last pregancy, she tought for nine
months it would not hold.
The delivery was difficult (they had to use forceps).
The child would not drink (nor from the breast - they tried for
three days, and also the bottle was difficult) it was if she didnot
have the power and after 5 to 10 minutes she dozed of and they tried
to keep the child a wake and to get her to drink.
After two week, the child was hospitalized (she could not hold her
temperature, had a red rash and was weakend from lack of food). The
doctors told her she had some kind of virus, from which they still
do not know exactly what it was.
The mother was happy at this moment to get some good sleep.
(She also is a bad sleeper). After 3 days she went home
In dec 2004 they asked for help. The child also had a dry cough from
which she woke up in the night.
I took the whole case, studied it well and prescribed Kali C 200C
diluted. It worked very well. The cough went away and everybody had
a good night sleep. She also could handle a "no" much beter Untill
march - the (sleeping)symptoms came back. It started with the wake-
ups in the night. I repeated diluted in more water and again things
went well.
Last week mother called up on me again. The girl started to wake up
again. Several times in the night.
There are no other symptoms. Girl seems perfectly healthy amd also
does not have these temper tantrums anymore, eats and drinks well
and has a lovely behavior. I am not sure if I should prescribe
(again) on this symptom.
I tried to give the parents some tips for (day and) nightrituels but
they do not seem to be open for this kind of advice.
In the mean time the mother tried kindival (some complexremedy -
tranquillizer for children, which you can buy at the local chemist)
and gives me the inmpression that a medicine will take away the
problem, while I believe that they also should adjust their lifesyle
(intercourse) towards the child.
(Hope you understand me do not quite know how to put this right).
I do not want to let them down, but I also do not want to be the
provider of "the golden medicine", as they seem to see it.
I also suggested to look at the case of the mother, but she refused.
She had been to a homeopath in the past and had such an aggravation
that she does not want to go again to a homeopath for herself.
I would be thankfull for some advice
Best regards,
Willy

Re: sleeplessness in child
It seems to me that you are slowly bringing the child back to health if
the 2 doses of kali carb have been so effective in eliminating the
cough, temper tantrums and initially the sleep patterns. I can't really
think of any reason why you shouldn't repeat.
Best wishes, Joy

Dear Willy,
Your case of the waking child rang bells -- I have a similar case on my
hands right now. I'll spare you the details, but the case was a complex one
with lots and lots of allopathic involvement. I prescribed Chamomilla and
the child responded fabulously. At this point, three months later, the only
symptom the parents remain concerned with is frequent waking and extreme
restlessness before and during sleep. (I'm actually a bit concerned about
developmental delays and see these as other symptoms.) In any case, I tried
councelling the parents about methods of teaching their child a bit more
independence during the night and realized that I had opened a marital can
of worms -- most likely the maintaining cause of the problem. I'm also a bit
at my wit's end. I have (as a last resort of sorts) tried Jalapa which you
may want to look into -- I'll report back if the results are positive. Good
luck!

Re: sleeplessness in child
Hi Willy, the best thing that I've found 9as a mother), is to stop
the afternoon sleep.
My daughter is almost 2 and a half. She still sleeps in the
afternoon, but she seems to feel she'd rather not. Often she rebels
the afternoon sleep.
When she does she refuses to sleep till 11 at night as she's still
full of life.
the days thas she does not sleep in teh afternoon, she has her dinner
by about 6 pm and is doing off by about 7 pm.
then wakes the next morning by 6.30am.his is a pattern I found with
my other 2 kids as well.
It may be time your patient stopped her afternoon sleep.
Hope this helps!

Dear Beth,
It seems very similar. Also the councelling of the parents. They ask
for advice, you'll give them some methods and for one reason or
another, they tell you that it is not good, or they are not able to
use this method, because ........
I also have the idea that this keeps the problems going.
I spoke with them last friday to repeat the remedy. They took it
with them, telling me that they would put it aside and use it when
they would think it is nessecary.
So be it.
Anyway, thanks for your tip about Jalapa. I will look in to it and
keep in touch.

Do look at Cypripedium which I obtained but didn't use when requesting information a while back about sleeplessness in a child.

Dear Beth,
I really empathise with your experience when treating this child:
your "marital can
of worms" is a common theme I've experienced in children with sleep
problems
and behaviour disorders (not all the time, but frequently). I guess
they are 'reacting
to environment', and as those of us on List who are parents can
testify, children are
usually micro-sensitive to even hidden emotional dramas being played
out. :-\

Re: sleeplessness in child
Hi, dr Leela,
This was one of the advices I gave. The child sleeps in the afternoon at
least 2 1/2 hours (sometimes 3).
The mother wants to wait untill after the summer, so the child can go to bed
at eight instead of seven pm.
Anyway thanks for your advice.
Best regards, Willy

Re: sleeplessness in child
Hi WIlly,
2.5 to 3 hours is too long for an afternoon sleep. It is a practical
step and I doubt it requires a remedy.
ONe cannot expect a child who has slept very well during the day to
sleep again at night, though there are children who seem to be able
to sleep all the time...but today with the amount of stimuli in the
environment, I think this is rare.
ONE way to wake the child earlier (in the afternoon) is to get them
to come watch a tv show they like or else a promise for icecream or
something.
All the best!
