Books (legal and illegal)

Post by Dana Ullman, MPH »

Friends,

For clarity...my company's name is HOMEOPATHIC EDUCATIONAL
SERVICES...and although we sell hundreds (!) of homeopathic books (and have
co-published 35+ books on homeopathy with North Atlantic Books), we are also
a source for homeopathic tapes, medicines, kits, software, ebooks, and
ecourses. Homeopathy is not just a business to me...it is my passion (as it
is for many people on this list!).

As for the illegal books that are published in India...as an author and
a publisher, I would REALLY appreciate it if people out there alerted me if
they (or anyone they know) purchases and obtains a book in which it says
inside that it is only to be sold to the Indian sub-continent. The Indian
publishers are not supposed to do this, and the authors and the publishers
get cheated when this happens. I want to protect our authors, and I want to
make certain that international laws of copyright are honored...and I hope
that you can help me.

Books, kits, creams, remedies, courses... I think, tho, that books are

their main emphasis.

I can tell you without a shadow of doubt that one can call BJAIN publishers
in India and tell them the title of the book one requires together with an
ISBN number and that book is published for a unbelievably small amount of
money. Of course this is unacceptable.
I know people have purchased books such as repertories and the Chronic
Diseases for less than a british £1.

In my experience, these are books that are long out of copyright -- sort of in the public domain. I've also seen ones that are recycled (previously owned), which makes a lot of sense -- why not keep them in use? Both of these situations with low priced books seem as though they should be legitimate. Rosemary

Friends
Never mind the International Copyright laws. I operate a printing
press out of Croydon in the UK. This is quite a lawless and
unpoliced area where my business thrives. Croydon is thankfully not
good old England where old ladies and vicars drink tea whilst
watching cricket.
Latest offers include:
Synthesis version 12.1 - $5
All Vermeulens books $3
Murphys Rep and MM $4
Why pay more?

As a British homeopathic bookseller of many years in London (Minerva) I would like to give my experience of the legal / illegal books debate. I often hear people assuming that B Jain are merrily pirating copyright material. Let me tell you if I was to order from B Jain these titles they would NOT be sent to me. It is NOT in their interest to be sued. Over the years a few copyright books may have slipped out but the present day policy is to be respectable as possible.
The problem is often the naivety of people doing deals for Indian distribution. Once a book is printed for Indian distribution only for a few rupees it should be no surprise that they get picked up and exported by AGENTS. There are many of these people in Delhi.
I just have skimmed Amazon's site and noticed a number of illegal Indian editions being marketed - I doubt very much that B Jain supplied them.
If you don't want illegal Indian editions of your book leaving India the only way to stop it is not to ask them to print copies there in the first place. Amazingly a lot of publishers and authors do - But the fact is most of us are in this for homeopathy and not the loot.
Most homeopaths don't think clearly about money and hence the situation.

Dear Friends,

As an author and a publisher, I was HORRIFIED to read the email below
from this lawless person who actually brags about breaking copyright laws.
I sincerely hope that no one from this list orders from him...and further, I
sincerely hope that he is banned from this list.

I hope that non-authors and non-publishers express a similar degree of
concern here.

I cannot believe this person is advertising something
illegal to homeopaths and trashing people's precious
work in such manner... "Why pay more"??? Aghhhh!
This is painful.

The location of this "printer" sounds very suspicious to me, reminds me of
another Croydon "alleged resident"........Nhoj Eel...........

Isn't Croydon where Nhoj Eel lives? This seems to have his touch...
