Hahnemann's Genesis 1

Post by David Little »

Hello Everyone,

I would like to discuss some of the point raised by Dr. Banerji,
especially those related to differences in the susceptibility to disease as
well as to homeopathic remedies.. The above article raises some
interesting questions. For example, is there a difference in the way
patients in modern Western countries and developing countries react to
diseases and remedies? Do the poor and rich in the same countries react
differently? Did those who lived in Germany in 1840 react differently than
those who live in 2005?

I am an American who has practiced in the USA and India for many, many
years. I would like to say that what Dr. Banerji is saying has some merit
but it cannot be taken too far. First of all, so many children die young in
India under bad hygienic conditions and infectious disease that only those
with a strong resistance even make it too five years old. People living in
unhygienic conditions on bad food do NOT live a healthy life. There is no
doubt that those areas in India with better hygiene and living conditions
are MUCH more healthy than those that live in dirty conditions on poor
nutrition, etc.. I have seen the difference first hand though my world wide
travels. Many of the rich are not that healthy because they abuse
themselves with too much of everything. One cannot get too carried away
with the idea that poor people living in squaller are healthier than those
that have better living conditions. This an exaggeration of an observation
that does possess some merit.

There is no doubt that the revolution in hygiene and food storage
reduces the spread of infectious diseases. This is true during the 18th and
19th century in the West. I have seen changes in villages in India over the
past 25 years due to the use of clean water, toilets and the safe removed
of waste. The people are healthier and happier. Children in the poor
districts of Calcutta are not healthy. They are dirty, sick and hungry.
Some have been so damage in the first five years by poverty, infectious
diseases and malnutrition that do not heal quickly. I have seen them
firsthand. Those who live in the country side, and are not too poor, are
much better off. If we take the Banerji's statement too literally then we
should have everyone get rid of clean water, sanitation and the hygienic
food so every will get healthier. This is simply not the truth. There is a
balance in health and harm in excesses.

Nevertheless, the excessive use of antiseptics, chemically treated and
fluoridated water, over immunizations, the abuse of antibiotics, fungicides
and steroids, etc., has had a serious impact on the immune system in what I
will called "over developed countries". An increase in allergies, asthma
and some other diseases has been linked to "excessive hygiene" in Western
countries! Excessive (might I say anal retentive) hygiene has removed so
many of the relatively harmless bacteria, mites, fungi, etc., that the
immune system suffers from *lack of exposure* in the early years. This is
the conclusion of many scientific studies.

When excessive hygiene is combined with the abuse of antibiotics,
antifungals, antivirals, etc., and over immunization the outcome is a
weaken immune system and faulty reactions. At the same time, the excessive
use of antiseptics, antibiotics, fungicides, antivirals and vermifuges has
caused the microorganism to mutate into new a more virulent strains with
more resistance to treatment. Several reports stress the fact that these
organism have transformed into new "super bugs" that Nature would have
never evolved by herself. With the help of environmental degradation,
population movment and climate change new infections are crossing species
lines and moving intro areas where they previous did not exist and the
population offers little resistance. All of this is increasing at
astronomical rates.

All obsession with sterility contributes to the inner and outer
suppression of the acute, half acute and chronic miasms as well as outer
pollution and inner toxicity. This syndrome produces two extremes types of
reactions, i.e, over sensitivity leading to autoimmune diseases and
allergies and hyposensitive leading to immunoeficiency disorders. This is
making people harder to treat with homeopathy because our remedies work by
the action-reaction model based on the vital force. When more persons over
reactive or under reactive our job becomes more difficult.

Those who still live in the countryside and are exposed to normal
parasitical pathogens actually suffer less of these modern problems. This
is also the conclusion of several scientific reports. The immune system is
supposed to learn how to fight diseases not have everything killed for it.
When one combines todays tendency to *excessive* hygiene, over
immunization, the abuse of antibiotics and other drugs with environmental
degradation, over urbanizations, over population, etc., the outcome is
faulty adaption, lack of resistance and idiosyncratic reactions.

An aspect left out in Dr. Banerji's assessment is the psychological
differences between those brought up in South Asian culture and Western
cultures. Since the end of WW II there has been a radical increase in
population, urbanization, and the number of persons working indoors in
factories and offices in western countries. This is combined with the break
down of the multi-generation families and the increase in nuclear families
where both parents work. The increase in the pace of modern life, and the
stress and strain associated with it, has had a great effect on the psyche
and soma of people in the 1st world. it!

People are now so divorced from nature that many are suffering what may
be called diseases of over civilization. This comes with an increase in
obsessive compulsive, hysterical, hypochondriacal and anxiety neurosis as
well as paranoid diseases and mood affective disorders like mania,
manic-depression, melancholia. The outcomes is an increase in premature
dementia, suicidal states, homicidal states, criminal insanity, sex crimes,
psychosis and schizophrenia. In general Indians are more tolerant and
contented than westerners because they have to be more adaptive. Many
westerners act like little more than spoiled children who do not know how
well they have it and cannot be satisfied by anything. This is true both
mentally and physically.

The answer to the affects of all this modern stress is more drugs and
suppression! Children raised in the new "rat race" are increasing put on
psychoactive chemicals which suppress the natural reaction of the
unconscious to negative situations without any real attempt at problems
solving. Teenagers suffering from the effects of normal adolescent changes
are put on drugs rather than giving support and counseling. Adults are
increasing using psychoactive chemicals as suggested by so-called "consumer
advocacy groups" which are supported by drug companies. People are given
questionnaires that make it seem like everyone needs to take psychoactive
drugs! Now they speak of "life enhancement" through these chemical which is
little more than legal recreational drug pushing. General practitioners are
giving massive amounts of these drugs to a greater number of patients with
no psychological intervention. The entire Western culture is breaking down
under the onslaught of the multi-national drug companies and their control
of the environment and the inner terrain of the body and the psyche.

People cannot stand their governments and governments cannot stand
their people.Children cannot stand their parents and parents cannot stand
their children. Men cannot stand women and women can not stand men. Old
people cannot stand young people and young people cannot stand old people.
The middle age persons are dissatisfied and view the future with dread.
Families, societies and the entire nations are suffering from ethical,
psychical, and physical breakdown and this collective psychoses is
increasing. Add to this the so-called war on terrorism and we have an
increase in fear, paranoia, alienation, false nationalism, racism and
religious and cultural prejudice. In the mean time the military industrial
complex is thriving. All of this is having a dramatic effect on the
psychological and physical health of millions.

This decline of humanity is reached epidemic proportions in Western
countries and getting worse in counties that take on rapid
westernization. I have only pointed out a few angles of what is
increasingly become group suppression of the body's needs, group hysteria
and group psychoses. What is really interesting about this is that it was
all predicted by Samuel Hahnemann in the introduction to the Organon!!! The
Founder wrote:

"As long has humanity has existed, people have been exposed,
individually and collectively, to illnesses of physical and moral causes.
In the raw state of nature few means were needed, since the simple way of
life admitted but few diseases. With civilization, however, the occasions
for falling ill, and the need for help against diseases grew in equal
measure. From then on (from after Hippocrates therefore for two thousand
years) people have occupied themselves with the testament of ever more
self-multiplying diseases. In the puzzling out how to help, using intellect
and presumptions, they allowed themselves to be seduced by their vanity.
Countless different view about the nature of disease and their redress
sprang from so many very different heads."

As long as humanity has existed people have been exposed both
individually and collectively to illness of mental and physical causes.
This statement implies has a dual nature, i.e., the collective and
individual as well as the psychic and somatic. We suffers both individually
and well as collectively from mental and psychical causes. When human
beings lived in harmony with nature they suffer a less complicated state
but with the advent of civilization they now suffer from a host of every
multiplying diseases of a more and more complex nature. These symptoms have
been met with new drugs, suppression and unnecessary surgeries which only
produce more troublesome mutations of increasing destructive powers. I call
this Hahnemann's Genesis because it deals with the "fall of humanity".

Many of these conditions are now called "diseases of civilization"
because they have reached massive proportions in Westernized countries and
are increasing in counties taking on rapid westernization. These are based
on the suppression to the environment by the excessive use of antiseptics,
pest control and herbicides with the internal suppression of all infections
with antibiotics, antiviral, fungicides and vermifuges as well as over
immunization. One is witnessing an increasing in damage to immune system
and an increase of chronic degenerative diseases. Now we have over
population, over urbanization, ]chemical, nuclear and electromagnetic
pollution and climate change on the outside and suppression, chemical
toxins, faulty adaptation and ethical and mental degeneration on the
inside. With it has come the decline of the family, of long term
relationships and social responsibility. There is a desecration of
civilization individually and collectively that is reaching serious
pathological proportions that threaten the survival of the human race.

My dear homoeopaths, what we are facing today is of apocalyptic
proportions. The modern epidemic of over and under reaction as well as
idiosyncratic responses is just one more reason to learn Hahnemann's
advanced techniques and the methods of adjusting the dose and repetitions
of the C and LM potency when needed. We must prove more remedies in the
traditional manner and make a deeper study of individual and collective
causes. It is one more reason to study the effects of drugs, suppression
and the miasms. It is one more reason to assess the attending circumstances
like constitution, temperament, predisposition, lifestyle, habits,
occupational hazards as well as personal and social relationships. It is
one more reason to come to terms with poisonings by chemicals. It is one
more reason to study the long term affects of occasioning and continual
maintaining causes that cannot be avoided. It is one more reason to pray
and work for humanity as a whole.

Similia Minmus

Hi David,
A slightly unrelated question:
Where are these volumes available "Susceptibility to Diseases
Banerji"? IS this dr. Piramal BAnerji? Do these volumes contain his
Miasmatic approach?
I would like to order them or have someone buy them for me.
thanks,
Leela

David, your post on the modern causes of disease was really eloquent and well presented. Thank you for sharing it with us. Certainly, as Liz pointed out, those of us working as homeopaths in highly urbanized areas are experiencing the epidemic of over and underreactiveness with many of our clients, and the suppression of natural awareness of self and the environment is a huge maintaining cause of disease. Treating these patients is much more complex, and demands a sustained patience and attention to the evolution of symptoms, often through several remedies before the pictures of deeper acting remedies begin to appear.

Thanks, again. Rosemary

Dear David and all,

Thanks for the good insight and an excellent perspective. I would like to add another facet.

From the yogic view there are -basically- 3 spheres of existence: physical, psychic and spiritual. On the physical and mental levels, "progress" is a bit of a chimera ("something hoped for but illusory or impossible to achieve"). That is to say that as we "progress" with new technology on the physical level, we "degress" in terms of increased disease, danger, pollution etc.

Similarly, "progress" in the psychic sphere - more education, more science - also leads to more psychic disease, stress etc. The reason for this lack of true progress is because this physical-psychic universe is limited and Nature will balance every (+) with a (-). Accordingly, only on the spiritual plane can we have true progress - there is no downside to individual or collective spiritual progress.

Homeopathically speaking- I have noticed this concept can explain what I've long observed in
practical application.

Where physical survival (due to poverty, etc) dominates, where there is less imput of drugs and technology (a shorter history both individually and collectively) the physical side of treatment also dominates. And the response of the patients is ofter quicker.

(ie there is, in a sense, somewhat "less progress" in their lives hence "less degress" also)

Psychic (mental-emotional) issues do not dominate their lives and do not dominate their treatment. That's not to say it has *no* imput, that is to say it has *less* imput. That's why we find in the villages and slums we can treat effectively with "therapeutic" medicine, or find a constitutional remedy using mostly general-physicals. It's as if Vithoulkas' heirarchy pyramid is turned upside-down.

However, cross over to the upper-classes in the same town and the psychic elements come much more into play. Physical survival is not primary, but emotional-mental issues come into play. Not to mention the easy access to polluting drugs, technology, etc that slows down the reaction of therapy.

As for Dr Banerji's observations about hardy Indians vs weak-stomached Westerners- eg "One man from India is much more tolerant to several bacteria or causes of deviation from health than any man from U.S.A. or Europe." - my own exerience and observation has been simply that humans are tolerant of the pathogens they are exposed to. I have observed Indians/Africans travelling abroad for the first time get violently sick with dysentery and other "bugs", though the water & food is "clean" by any standard. Personally, once I was acclimatised to the flora & fauna, I never got sick travelling in India, even while in the villages or eating chapatis from the open stalls on the road.

Thank you for this insight - it is very interesting indeed. I also know that while travelling my own resistance adapts to my environment - so in Latin America I am fine now, and eat in the local fritangas, drink the local water where it is sensible to do so,etc - and I don't get ill - but I did experience a parasitic diarrhoea the first time I went, as much through my own anxiety about this new culture and environment, and despite taking "precautions" . It was a valuable learning experience!

Hello Didi et al,

Yes, in yoga there are three bodies (causal, astral and physical) and
five sheaths (food, prana, mind, intellect and unconscious). The 3 bodies
and five sheaths manifest through the medium of the of the 7 chakras
(wheels), the crown (spirit), third eye (psyche), throat (ether) heart
(air), navel (Ifire), sex (water) and root. (earth). The three lower
centers are based on "I, me and mine" and manifest as the instinct for
survival, sex, and personal power. The three upper centers and based "we,
all and one" and manifest as love, expansion, and unity. The crown center
is transcendent and all embracing.

Different individuals are centered in different bodies, sheaths and
chakras which manifests in their character, energy field, body and
acitivities. The world today is controlled by the "takers" who only
manifesting through the lower chakras while the "givers" that are
manifesting from the 3 higher chakras are in a minority.

What we see in the outer macrocosmic world is a refection of what is
going on in the inner microcosmic world. Because the inner microcosmic
elements are in conflict the outer elements are chaotic. An unusual amount
of destructive earthquakes (earth), floods (water) volcanic eruptions
(fire), hurricanes (air) and asteroid strikes (space) are the outcome in
the macrocosmic world. The amount of ignorance, pollution, over population,
poverty and war we see outside is a mirror image of the internal unethical
behavior, loss of intelligence and lack compassion on the inside. As within
so without.

Fortunately, a small bit of light can overcome a large amount of
darkness. If only a small percentage of the "givers" are able to overcome
their inner obstacles that will overcome most of the outer obstacles and
there is a chance for humanity to transform itself in line with the greater
good. So it is important that each individual does not to allow the outer
world to dishearten them in such a fashion that they do not seek the peace
that is available within. The only way we can help the situation is by
working internally and externally to the best of our ability.

This is all part of what is called the Map of Munid in the West and the
Brahm Chakra in the East.
Disease itself focuses on the plane that dominates the individual or
collective group. Illness comes in layers. Dissimilar layers either repel,
repress or from complex states. When the physical plane dominants the
emotional and psychic plane will be repressed. It is not that there is no
emotional difficulties but the physical survival is more important at the
time. If the basis needs of the physical level are sufficiently present
then the emotional plane comes forward. If the needs of the emotional plane
are covered the spiritual plane comes forward. Disease works in two
directions at once i.e., from the outer to the inner (objective realities)
and from the inner to the outer (subjective realties). Which one dominates
depends on the individual, time and circumstances.

The wheel of karma (circle of action) is a form of Homoeopathy. We sow
the seeds of anger in one situation and sooner or later that anger returns
in a similar situation. If the energy of insight sees the cause of that
returning anger it potentizes the emotions with awareness. Then the new
stronger outer anger will remove the older now weaker impression of inner
anger and the reaction of the vital consciousness will produce compassion
and forgiveness. This is the basis for Homoeopathic psychology. Every
moment the universe is giving us an opportunity to overcome our inner
obstacles through awareness, compassion and service to humanity.
After living in South Asia for many years I went back to the USA for a
visit and suffered a good bout of "physical and mental reverse culture
shock". I was amazed at how obsessed many people were about their food,
clothes, looks and lifestyles! They always talked about health, but at the
same time, were showing all the symptoms of hypochondriacal neurosis! I
found it hard to talk about such things all the time. The more on becomes
obsessed with health the sicker they become!

At the same time, I got stomach gas and diarrhea from all the good food
everyone was eating. I did not have a good stool until I got back to New
Delhi, India and ate some street food! So Didi is quite right about the
need to become accustomed to the local flora and fauna. This also includes
the psychological "flora and fauna". It took me awhile to develop a proper
"persona": and "social ego" for the West again. Now I don't really fit in
perfectly anywhere but I am comfortable everywhere. It takes time to mature
as a world citizen.

Sincerely, David Little
