Not exclusively, but when a split dose seems indicated (as opposed to an LM) and where the patient is likely to be sensitive, or likely to need a repetition of the centesimal potency without going immediately to the next higher potency. I find it's one good tool among several, depending on the patient, the circumstances, the disease, etc.....

I'm curious when dry potencies for chronic ever have to be given. Can you
share a little Rosemary about when they might be necessary when low potency
6C and 30C in water and LM's seem to be what Hahnemann only used in 6th
edition.

I wouldn't say dry doses HAVE to be given in chronics --- but sometimes there are no contraindications, and it's convenient and works beautifully in those situations, when the patient is clearly healthy in general, the illness is of relatively recent onset, there are no complications, and the remedy is unambiguously indicated. So why not?

besides the gentleness of the MS dose, there is the flexibility to

grasps the body's attention without an assault from a material dose.
One has only to read the Oraganon on this to understand the possible
advantages, so I don't see a reason NOT to use an MS or LM in solution.
The exception would be as Shannon stated, the first dose in an acute
situation.

Dear Sheri
Please define a split dose.
Who invented it?
and how does one use it?

Re: Any 6th edition prescribers here?
I heartily agree! I am biased since my first ten years as a patient
and most of my classroom time were with dry, single, high-potency
doses, but even when I know I *could* use LM or other water/repeated
doses, when I'm confident that a single dose will do what I want, I see
no reason to add the complication. I usually use dry/single/high doses
with my kids, just because I don't want to add any more to what we have
to cram into the schedule each day. When I see an *advantage* to an
LM, I definitely use it. But most of the time, frankly, simplicity
wins out at my house.
OTOH if I'm uncertain about the remedy I'll test it in low potency
doses, repeated "as needed" (assuming it works). And with those too I
have yet to see any problem from repeating dry doses. (However I
*never* repeat doses on a schedule, but always test to see what the
action is, and how long it lasts. I guess that's my "safety net".)
Cheers,
Shannon

Re: Any 6th edition prescribers here?
Its not just about LM's - 6th edition. In my revision I mentioned 5th
edition which continue into 6th
6C, 12C, 30C in water, succussions based on sensitivity, test dose, follow
closely in upcoming days. Decide where to go from there.
Instead of 4th edition - one dry potency, wait 3-4 weeks to evaluate. Do
you repeat? Do you find new remedy? Much more difficulty in knowing what
to do. Worse aggravations. And then people repeating the same potency
again.............instead of always increasing the potency by using water
solutions and succussions before each new dose.
That is what I'm talking about
