Saccharum officinale

Post by dusty1197 »

Hi All,

Does anyone have a proving for Sacc or any notes or other
information regarding its homeopathic employment?

Also, has anyone experienced using it with children who thumb-suck,
are hungry for love, clamor for it, always want to be cuddled, are
jealous of, even aggressive toward, siblings when they get
attention, and have a terrible time being separated from one or both
parents for fear that they will not return?

Thanks!
Toni

Have used it twice with good results Jean
Compensatory Mechanisms for lack of Attention, Affection, and Love
-- To prescribe Saccharum officinale with success, we have to understand
the two main reactions of someone who is profoundly frustrated in their
need for love and affection. The person either tries to compensate for
this lack or refuses any form of affection. This is the reason Saccharum
has so many opposite symptoms:
 An insatiable appetite accompanied by bulimia, or no appetite at all
accompanied by anorexia.
 A thirst for large quantities, or no thirst at all.
 A great need to cuddle, or refusing every contact.
 Exaggerated thumb sucking, or no thumb sucking at all.
 Sensitive to pain, or almost insensitive to pain.
 No appetite in the morning, or ravenous appetite on waking so that
they have to eat immediately.
-- We sometimes see these kinds of contradictory symptoms in the same
person. For example, the person may alternate between gentle and very
aggressive behavior. Or the person may have cold feet but may sometimes
put them outside the covers at night because they feel so hot.
-- The predilection for compensating for a lack of affection seems to be
by far the most prevalent reason for the use of sweets of any kind.
There is a definite link between love and sweets. That's why we talk of
a "sweet" boy or girl and why we call our beloved "honey," "sweetheart,"
and so forth. In our twentieth-century culture, sweets play an enormous
role in compensating for our deep and even superficial frustrations.
-- That's why the Saccharum patient displays so many symptoms in
relation to food desires and aversions, to appetite and eating. The most
frequent symptom is the exaggerated desire for any kind of sweets,
especially for chocolate, licorice, pastries, and biscuits. The
increased desire for sweets or increased appetite before menses and the
desire for sweets after dinner are also strong in Saccharum.
-- An increase in appetite as the day progresses is typical. Frequently,
we see no appetite at all in the morning after rising. The appetite
increases by the afternoon and especially in the evening, with a
tendency to eat candy in the evening while there is not such a need
during the day.
-- Another group, which is more or less subject to hypoglycemia, has a
strong need to eat immediately on waking and a tendency to eat
frequently between meals, not feeling well if the meal is postponed a
little. They feel weak, trembling, empty in the stomach, dizzy, and
headache-prone if they can't eat at regular hours. They feel weak and
irritable in the morning, have difficulty activating themselves, and
feel generally better after breakfast.
-- Although Saccharum patients can exhibit a lack of appetite and
thirst, an insatiable appetite and a great thirst are more common.
-- In children, we can see the compensatory mechanisms more clearly.
They have a great need for cuddling. They suck their thumb and bite
their nails (transformed to an uncontrollable need to smoke in adults),
putting everything in the mouth and touching everything. I have
frequently seen the relation between sucking the thumb and smoking. Many
patients admitted that they exchanged the first for the latter. I was
amazed to find so many adults who were still sucking their thumb. Many
people smoke to reduce or to control their weight because they
experienced that stopping
smoking meant eating more, especially sweets.
-- Another compensatory mechanism is loquacity. Most patients are not
aware of their secret need for attention. Children have many means at
their disposal for getting attention. They can do pranks, ask again and
again for something, do things that are forbidden, ask constantly for
attention when their parents are talking with someone else, act jealous
of their brother or sister, act restless, shout, fight, cry, have pain,
become ill.
-- In adults, these mechanisms can persist or change into more
adult-like forms, such as the exaggerated need to possess objects or to
have new things, with a constant feeling of dissatisfaction. Also the
incapacity to have a deep and lasting relationship with someone, looking
again and again for a new love affair but never finding what they are
really seeking. They are like a perforated bucket. You can put all the
water you want in it, but the bucket will empty itself constantly. There
is a fundamental and profound frustration from early life that cannot be
satisfied. (See
Case Number 2.) Only a deep transformation and cure can help such a
person, and homeopathy can be a very effective tool for this.
-
Obesity and Weight Loss
-- Obesity is linked to a lack of affection. Most obese people spend
their lifetime trying desperately to lose weight. The problem is that
there is a profound frustration underneath the exaggerated need to eat.
The body holds a deep fear of lack of affection in the future, so it
transforms every ounce to fat and retains this fat. This is the way the
body assures its reserves.
-- When obese people follow a starvation diet and lose 10 or 20 pounds
they start to compensate for the frustrating diet and regain their
initial weight in some months or even quicker. Only a person with a very
strong will can succeed in such an enterprise. With Saccharum we can
often help this type of patient more efficiently and profoundly by
treating the underlying problem.
-
Differential Diagnosis
-- To me, Saccharum officinale most resembles Belladonna, Calcarea
carbonica, Carcinosin, Chamomilla, Cuprum metallicum, Lachesis,
Lycopodium, Opium, Stramonium, and Tuberculinum bovinum.
-- First, let's discuss the group of restless children with behavior
problems. For this group, Saccharum officinale most resembles
Belladonna, Carcinosin, Chamomilla, Cuprum metallicum, Stramonium, and
Tuberculinum bovinum. In the new Repertorium Homeopathicum Syntheticum,
edited by Dr. Frederik Schroyens, the important rubric of restless
children is, in my experience, still lacking some important remedies
such as Belladonna, Cuprum metallicum, Stramonium, and, probably the
most important of all, Saccharum officinale.
-- Belladonna shares the following symptoms with Saccharum officinale:
congestion of the head; flushing; restlessness; aversion to warm food,
vegetables, and milk; aggressiveness with striking and kicking; waking
from fright; bed-wetting; maliciousness; irritability on waking; impulse
to touch everything; changeable mood; and defiance. Both are important
remedies for flushes during menopause.
-- The resemblance with Calcarea carbonica is logical, because sugar is
interacting with the calcium metabolism. The common symptoms are as
follows: obesity; tiredness; obstinacy; aversion to warm food; desire
for sweets, ice cream, and milk; complaints before menses, including
sadness, irritability, pain in mammae, swelling of mammae; head
congestion; cold feet, becoming too warm in bed; perspiration of the
head, especially at night; and constipation.
-- Chamomilla can be difficult to differentiate because of the following
symptoms: violence; violent anger; kicking and striking; irritability;
sensitivity to pain; extreme thirst; desire to be carried; restlessness;
and profuse perspiration at night.
-- The differential diagnosis with Stramonium also can be very difficult
because Saccharum officinale has almost the same forsaken feeling with
the enormous anxiety at night and the fear of being alone at night,
obliging the parents to stay with the child until the child falls asleep
again. Other common symptoms are as follows: clinging to the mother;
ceaseless talking; extreme thirst; violence and violent rage;
painlessness of usually painful complaints; jealousy; restlessness; and
running about.
-- Another important differential diagnosis to make is with Lachesis,
which shares the following symptoms with Saccharum: loquacity; jealousy;
homesickness; depression in the morning and excitement in the evening;
aversion to being touched; flashes of heat during menopause; and
sensitivity to pain. You can see enough common symptoms that making a
choice is difficult.
-- The Saccharum patient can be very tense sometimes, with cramps. This
can make it difficult to differentiate from Cuprum metallicum. The
common symptoms are as follows: aversion to being touched; lassitude;
sensitivity to pain; restlessness; cold feet; timidity; dictatorial
behavior; amelioration from being carried about; irritability;
destructiveness; night terrors; and loquacity. (See my article on Cuprum
metallicum published in the February 1992 edition of Homeopathic Links.)
-- Lycopodium can greatly resemble Saccharum. When you are sure that you
have a Lycopodium patient and the remedy doesn't work, you have a good
chance that the remedy is Saccharum. I had several such cases that
proved to be Saccharum. The resemblance is striking: dictatorial
behavior; want of self-confidence; need of approbation; fear of
undertaking new things; oversensitivity to pain; irritability and
sadness in the morning on waking; desire for sweets; insatiable
appetite; defiance; disobedience; insolence; unrefreshed sleep; and
restlessness while sitting.
-- Tuberculinum bovinum has the following symptoms in common with
Saccharum: alternating moods; maliciousness; aggressive and destructive
behavior; irritability in the morning on waking; dissatisfaction;
profuse perspiration during sleep; chronic colds; desire for sweets,
salt, and milk; thirst for large quantities; ravenous appetite;
restlessness, with an impulse to run; capriciousness; striking;
obstinacy; anxiety at night; and bed-wetting.
-- It was rather surprising to me to find Opium as a remedy close to
Saccharum. The most striking common symptoms are as follows:
insensitivity to pain; irresolution; open mouth; and constipation with
hard balls.
-- I purposely kept Carcinosin for the end, because it has its own
history. When the picture of Saccharum became more and more clear to me
I was struck by its likeness with Carcinosin. I had several cases with
an almost complete picture for both Carcinosin and Saccharum. I decided
not to take up the specific symptoms of Carcinosin in the picture of
Saccharum, fearing that I would not be able to distinguish them later.
And that was a lucky choice. Much later I understood that these remedies
follow one after another, first Carcinosin and then Saccharum. This gave
me the option
to continue the treatment of a lot of Carcinosin patients when their
case was no longer progressing.
-- I am still working out the relationship between Saccharum and
Carcinosin, but I need more information over a longer period of time
before I publish my findings. In my opinion, the main difference is that
Saccharum patients compensate rather well for their need for love and
affection; Carcinosin patients are much less able to do so and are much
more liable to victimize themselves. But there still are a lot of
questions to answer.

Finding the Optimal Dosage: Unresolved Problems
-- Often, after a patient takes Saccharum, rather serious aggravations
appear, especially acute infections but also pain and mental
disturbances. One patient said to me, "I'll never take this horrible
medicine again," after I had given her Saccharum officinale 200K. She
felt very depressed and had a strong desire to commit suicide. I
reconsidered her case carefully and was certain that Saccharum was her
remedy. So I convinced her to take Saccharum officinale LM6 every day
until she felt any aggravation. Two weeks later she telephoned. She
enthusiastically told me that her
depression was completely gone and that she never felt better.
-- Other patients get infections such as otitis, sinusitis (often),
angina, bronchitis, bursitis, and panaritium. It has been difficult to
resolve these problems with lower potencies of Saccharum in a solution
or with more specific remedies, and sometimes I have not been able to
avoid using antibiotics. I am trying to find out whether Saccharum album
(rather than officinale) is a better choice in these cases.
-- I am still working out optimal potencies in order to avoid too severe
or too long-lasting aggravations. Nevertheless, one thing is absolutely
certain. Saccharum officinale is a very deep-acting remedy that touches
profound mechanisms in the human being, and it can be hazardous to give
the high potencies that classical homeopaths use. For adults, I often
start with 30 or 200K. For children in relatively good health and with
behavioral problems, I often give 10MK without any problem. I repeat the
30K every week, the 200K every two weeks, the 1MK every three weeks, and so
on.

Thank you, Jean. This is extraordinary info. I am amazed at the
similarity to a current case of mine involving a 5-year-old child
with low self-confidence, who always reaches for her mom, desires
company, sucks her thumb, is dictatorial when she can get away with
it, jealous, greedy, is over-sensitive to pain and restless but who
did not respond to Lyc in any potency. The mother then told me that
the little girl cannot eat sugar, as it makes her feel ill and the
next day there is mucus in her stool. I don't see any specifics in
the information with regard to < sugar, but I think it can be
extrapolated since, not surprisingly, the entire remedy revolves
around issues involving sugar and using it as compensation. I'm
also amazed at how poorly represented Sacc is in the rep with only
184 rubrics in Radar!

As far as the reports and risks of aggravation cited at the bottom,
what was your experience in the two cases you worked? I use nothing
but medicinal solutions, which has really managed to scale down
aggravations; nevertheless, I'd be interested to know what you
observed, especially since my case is a child who is "stuffy" and
that gives me concern over otitis and upper respiratory infection.

Thanks again for the info!

Toni

Forgot to add, Jean, that the child had previously been treated with
Puls, also with no improvement in either her behavioral problems
(separation anxiety) or nasal congestion.

Yes, it's Radar 9. Wow, that's a huge discrepancy. I got mine by
using comparative extraction (individual extraction) with a single
remedy entered (all four degrees); I still come up with only 184.
What am I doing wrong?

Wait. I just did it over and now I'm getting 329 rubrics. This
happened once before but it was the number of remedies in certain
rubrics that kept coming up differently. So I called the Radar
folks and reported it. The same thing happened to them when they
tried. I'm going to close the program and restart it and see what
happens.

Thanks for pointing it out, Patti!

In a woman in 60s. Long long history of severe depression did
aggravate first , Gave her 200c in glass of water . Did have a positive
dream which was encouraged us. Eventually came good for a while. Uses
a roundabout of remedies including Vernix Caseosum also from Smits.
Repeats each on indication. sometimes also Platina and Carcinosum.
Terribly difficult case most contact by phone. Now long periods when do
not hear from her. She has largely learned how to self manage.
In another young woman 30c used. no aggravation and she got on with
her life with much less dependency, Best Wishes Jean

Thank you, Jean. 30C is where I'd like to start. I see a Carc
similarity in the deep attachment to others, but the compensation,
or lack thereof, is a good differentiating feature. I'll let you
know how the case progresses.
