Food cravings/aversions/obstacles to cure?

Post by Lisa Newlin »

Dear Respected Colleagues,

As a student who's just begun the clinical phase of her studies, I am deeply interested in the role that food cravings and aversions play in a person's health and what we, as homeopaths should do in terms an attempt by the body to balance out a system that's out of balance? Do the cravings and aversions make the system more out of balance, perpetuating the patient's problem in an endless cycle?

I am aware that in the Organon Hahnemann suggested a bland diet, leaving out many foods and drinks we commonly eat today and he speaks of habits and foods as being obstacles to cure in aphorism 260 along with the footnotes listed in the 6th edition. What I'm wondering is, in the course of a daily practice, how many people make these recommendations to their patients and how successful are the patients in following them?

Also, I've been interested in the Blood Type Diet for myself now for about a year. What is your opinion on this diet?

Thanks for the clarifications.

Sincere regards,

Lisa Newlin

The answer is in the question itself. The aversions or
cravings, are our guide to the remedy. I had a female
patient about 28, with tachycardia on raising arms,
oppressed breathing, restricted sensation in throat
and emotion related problems since first pregnancy.
But , during the conversation she asked me, " will you
give me a medicine to stop my raw rice eating habit ?
I devour about 300 to 400 grams everyday". After a
week after I gave staph 30 some amel in breathing. 200
did nothing. 1 m dug her up with a 2 day terrible
aggravation followed by a wonderful disappearance of
all he complaints including raw rice craving. Still on
placebo for two months.

My wife, has a excessive craving for Ghee and am
currently on the lookout for a suitable rx ? any
clues, anybody? Just "fats, desire" is the rubric or
what ?

Hi, Venkat--

A patient of mine had a similar obsessive craving for fats. Carcinosin did
the trick.

Dear Lisa, I think one has to be very careful what advice we pass on to our
clients regarding food. We need to know a great deal about food and
nutrition to be able to pass on quality advice - we need to know about fats,
protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and all the trace elements, how
they work and function in the body and what the effects are of toxicity and
deficiency and sometimes there just isn't enough time to spend with a client
on this subject, although if a case is obviously in need to special
attention in this area I will try to devote some time to it.

It isn't always wise to pass on information about diets that might suit one
person but won't suit another - more general advice is needed in my opinion.
The most I do is to encourage people to eat as organically and balanced as
possible. I can think of quite a number of cases that didn't need any
homeopathic remedy, just a complete overhaul of their diet.

Part of any case taking should be to enquire as to whether there is any high
intake of substances such as aspartame but also any other substance which
indicates a lack of balance and any craving can indicate that - aversions
sometimes suggest other more rational options? You also have to keep in mind
aggravations and ameliorations from foods (not the same as aversions or
cravings) as part of the case taking.

Hope useful, best wishes, Joy
