Hi Suzanne and homeopaths thinking of hypothroid and sea remedies,
Sorry this is so long. I am trying to figure out what to give a patient for hypothyroid problems.
Actually, I was thinking of Calc-carb for a hyprothyroid patient who had exactly Suzanne's reaction to it, palpitations. A year later, I am thinking of giving Calc-muriaticum. The mur part of Nat-mur is muriaticum also which did most of the work for us over the past year. If I get the heart palpitations from Calc-m, I will probably dilute or use it less frequently. She was very disturbed by them and went promptly to the doctor without consulting me. The doctor found nothing. I quickly stopped the Calc-carb because I convinced myself that my logic was not well founded. Probably I was just too scared of the heart palpitations. She was my first patient and I was very jittery. Today, I still would not like heart palpitations as an aggravation.
She has been using Nat-mur for the past year. Wrote her first novel on an intercurrent Sulpher during a 2 month period. Problems she had fulfilling this dream of writing a novel are deeply involved with her black sheep identity in her natal family. She has only 20% of her thyroid working and Calc-carb repped very well for hypothroid related problems. Calc-carb is 3 for hypothyroidism. She is very sweaty which is counter to what could be expected from a oyster shell remedy (calc-carb). Her weight gain one year ago and low energy, can be attributed to the hypothyroid problem. Aside from that and itching around the annus and other itchy skin outbreaks, we have run out of symptoms to work on. Her symptoms were very complicated when we began.
She is now off all drugs except the thyroid hormone replacement. She was given floride as a dental treatment for many years as a child (by her mom), thus possibly hyper thyroid followed by hypo thyroid in her young adult years. She has the bug eyes of hyperthyroidism. We tried the test of smearing on her belly Iodine (probodine spelling???? that is used as a surgical disinfectant). After 12 hours, the orange mark was still there. My mark dissappeared in 15 minutes. Evidently her absorption of Iodine is much slower than mine. Yet last year after the weight gain, her endocriologist decreased the amount of hormone replacement. I am confused about why he would do this in relation to our little test. Probably there is no relationship. According to our Minutus discussion, she is supposed to smear this iodine on her belly to increase her iodine. Have not done that. I am too inexperienced to be doing too many things at once.
Has significant problems with her whole natal family and in particular to her unmotherly mother. She is an exceedingly motherly type and exhausts herself with two late-born boys. She is not making her mother's emotional mistakes, she says. I am thinking now about Calc-muriaticum because of Jan Scholten's idea that the problem with the mom is addressed by the muriaticum. I have never use Jan Scholten's ideas and wonder if others have had success.
In F. Master's book: clinical observations of children's remedies, I find: obese, suppurative abscesses, sensitive to criticism and opinion of others, shy, desire sweets (We are done with the watery nasal discharge and glandualar discharges through nat-mur). He offers cold sweat, but she is generally hot (partially from early menopause), but says that she feels cold so maybe she has cold sweat?? Glandular problems are all over the literature for Calc-m. The thyroid is a gland even if Calc-m is not noted for hypothyroid.
Does anyone have other good sources for Calc-mur? Scholten says that it is very common for children. She is not a child, but the trauma of her life took place during childhood in dis-relation to her natal family. To me, that is significant.
I've also had vague thoughts about Aqua-marina but mostly because she believes that her mother spies on her. She carefully hides her literary work and diary to avoid the spy --- who will then criticize her. She is a professor and therefore in a very public position and is quite concerned with people watching her, naturally I suppose. These thoughts on spying come from Mangialavori's lectures are are too nebulous to be followed. He says that aqua marina is much more common than the typical prescrition pattern. Probably our Nat-murs are often aqua marina. The thought that she is a sea remedy or an element that is plentiful in sea water is significant. I don't know if Calc-m (chloride of calcium) is a natural salt in sea water.
I have a feeling that the halogens would help her. That's another reason why I think also about cloride although it is not mentioned by Varma below:
"Identification: yields reactions characteristic of calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium and of bromides, iodides and sulphates."
Sankaran's description of cloride (ie muriaticum) "dissappointed sympathetic vs her desire to breakoff with her unsympathetic family hits the mark.
Blessings,
Ellen
