celibacy"?

Re: celibacy/continence?
Well celibacy - is no sex and if continence is the opposite of incontinence then I presume it means profuse urination!! Sorry I couldn't resist that!!
According to my Isis dictionary programme
DictionaryContinence
Abstaining from sexual intercourse; able to retain voluntarily.
Generally continence is used with reference to continence of sex, urine or stool,
but in Repertory this is mainly abstinence from sex.
In chapter female genitalia, there is a rubric Congestion - ovaries, continence
from.
Here, it means there is an increased congestion of ovaries due to abstinence
from sexual intercourse.

ARTFL Project: Webster Dictionary, 1913
Continence, Continency (Page: 313)
1. Self-restraint; self-command.
He knew what to say; he knew also, when to leave off, -- a continence
which is practiced by few writers. Dryden.
2. The restraint which a person imposes upon his desires and passions;
the act or power of refraining from indulgence of the sexual appetite,
esp. from unlawful indulgence; sometimes, moderation in sexual
indulgence.
Chastity is either abstinence or continence: abstinence is that of
virgins or widows; continence, that of married persons. Jer. Taylor.
3. Uninterrupted course; continuity. [Obs.] Ayliffe.
Celibacy (Page: 230)
The state of being unmarried; single life, esp. that of a bachelor, or
of one bound by vows not to marry. The celibacy of the clergy." Hallom.

Re: celibacy/continence?
Continence has 2 meanings - one = much the same as celibacy, i.e. to refrain
but here I think you need to keep in mind the other meaning = to refrain
from the discharge
which is not the same thing. Continence is a kind of
coitus interuptus.

Ah, now that makes sense, thanks Joy!
And that explains why some remedies are in both rubrics, even by the same
author. Whew!

Interesting, Joy. I'm curious -- do you know of a rubric for trying to avoid the discharge without avoiding sexual contact? Yeah -- I know -- sounds pretty weird, and is. This is a central issue for a patient.
Thanks.

Very funny Chris - still giggling
Rosemary, to try and answer your question. I guess part of this depends on
WHY someone needs to do this.
Have a look at
Male, seminal emissions with depression (i.e. when it does happen and can't
be avoided)
Male, ejaculation difficult + incomplete + without enjoyment
Male, emissions aggravate
Male, continence aggravates (although this might not be the correct for your
case).
It can be all about not letting go, social, religious and cultural
upbringing, a refusal to give (a different kind of 'hanging on'), perhaps
the tension of the continence is enjoyable?
Hope useful, best wishes, Joy

Dear Rosemary, just to add to last post, there is in Mind, fear after
emission - which also might be useful to the case you have.
