Hello all,
Yes, I wish that the original definition of the miasms was not changed.
Miasms by definition are the affects of infections and their sequels, which
are collective diseases of common cause and similar symptoms. By making the
miasms ALL unresolved disease states Hahnemann's profound study of
susceptibility, infection, primary, latent and secondary symptoms are lost.
It also neutralizes 180 years of careful observations by generations of
homeopaths of these infections and their inherited affects. Hahnemann's
original work was an early studies of the immune system and autoimmune and
immunodeficiency disorders and their acquired and inherited sequels. All of
this valuable scientific data gets lost when the word miasms just means
"never-well-since whatever."
The miasms are not the only collective diseases that affects
homogeneous groups. Collective diseases can included physical and mental
traumas, endemic nutritional deficiencies, exposure of a group to poisons
and toxins, as well as environmentally induced disorders such as the
affects of living in an unhealthy climate, dead buildings, negative
telluric affects, etc. Hahnemann spoke about these types of things as early
as 1817 in the Common Sources of MM. The collective anamnesis can even deal
with group hysteria, mass panic, collective psychosis and other group forms
of "madness" like the present "war mania" with its undigested Crusade and
Jihad archetypes. The group picture is not just for infectious diseases.
Nevertheless, all these various other collective states, should not be
called miasms.
There are also other types of collective categories that share similar
symptoms and are helpful to the homeopath. This includes the four major
Hippocratic temperament (choleric, phlegmatic, sanguine,
nervous-melancholic) and their 12 mixed temperaments (cholero-sanguine,
phlegmato-nervous, etc). All of this relates to the Mappa Mundi. There is a
great amount of information in the old books on the remedies that are well
suited to particular diathetic constitutions and innate and acquired
temperaments. This work also began with Hahnemann. So there are many ways
we can use categories that help us with grouping remedies so we can study
them more precisely. This is all part of the lost teachings of Samuel
Hahnemann. All of these methods need to be reassessed and brought up to
date for practice in our times.
I think it would be wonderful if the categories of chronic miasms versus
chronic dyscrasiae was understood, but alas, miasms have become all things
to all people. I heard one well know teacher speaking about how a child
caught a miasm from watching too much television!
Sincerely, David Little
