As I mentioned Ailanthus as one of the rx to keep in mind for Mono/Glandular
Fever, and as someone asked me about it I thought I would share this.

Ailanthus glandulosa - also called the tree of heaven (it grows so tall as
if to reach up high to the heavens)

As the name suggests, this remedy is all about glands + fevers (low grade),
streptococcus infection, eruptive diseases and a tendency to haemorrhages.
The eruptive disease may have a history of being suppressed and it returns
annually as a reminder - this suppression being a leading causation of the
general state as well as cases of measles where the eruption fails to
appear.

The throat and neck are the main areas of weakness = tonsillitis, mumps,
diphtheria. The whole area is tender and swollen both externally and
internally. The internal throat is oedematous, dark, dusky and ulcerative.
The mouth is discoloured brown. There is a sensation as if choking and pain
extends to the ears.

The dark and dusky colour of the throat is repeated in the skin conditions -
dark, livid and purplish with blisters filled with a dark substance. The
eruption come in patches and disappear on pressure as when the skin is
mottled. Malignant scarlatina. This remedy is a delusional one and there is
a feeling as if the skin is crawling (this might link with the delusion a
rat running up the leg)

Although the fevers are low grade the prostration experienced is extreme
with lots of sighing, feels stupid, indifferent and dull, intense restless
anxiety, delirious, weakness, vomiting and threatened sepsis. The infection
effects the liver and you can expect some irritability.

When the delirium is in full swing it is raging and can be maniacal,
heedless, sees rats running across the room and up the leg and yet they feel
as if in a dream, they mutter all the time and everything feels unreal. They
can become unconscious and become desperately ill.

An extreme case would be one of headache, intolerance of light, vomiting
(which often comes because of an accompanying feeling of dizziness and
staggering gait), hot red face, inability to sit up, petechiae and rash on
the skin, dark and livid colour, rapid small pulse - has all the hall marks
of scarlet fever and, even worse, meningitis.

The infection then works its way downwards - haemorrhage from the nose and
gums - the lungs feel sore << right lung, sensation as if the cells stuck
together, the cough is deep and there are many attempts to raise lumps of
mucous. The breathing is hurried. There is burning in the stomach and
bowels, dysentery like sx with haemorrhaging. No appetite except for cold
water. Pain in the right hip joint. Urine is scanty. Sleep is heavy and
restless

But the most important sx are the active acute meningitis type that can lead
to prostration and unconsciousness but if it has become a more chronic state
it might not be so easy to recognise the sx picture and there might be
frequent recurring bouts of general malaise that are characterised by
headaches, skin eruptions, throat infections and extreme lassitude.

This remedy also has an affinity to Raynaud's which probably gives rise to
the strange sx of the passage of electric current from head into limbs.
