HISTORY - The “Potato murrain” is characterized by “the rapid
putrescence of the leaves and haulm, which is first indicated by the
presence of a little mold, Peronospora infestans, which preys upon the
tissues, spreading rapidly in every direction. The tubers also exhibit
brown spots on their surface and within their tissues and according to
circumstances decay with greater or less rapidity” (Treasury of
Botany).
In 1846 the sudden inroad of this disease led to the fearful
famine in Ireland, which resulted in the death of thousands. Mure made
the first proving of Sol-t-ae., using a potato “in an entire state of
decomposition without, however, being completely rotten.” Effects of
eating diseased potatoes, some of them fatal, have been observed and
these have been added to Mure’s.

HOMEOPATHIC -- Sol-t-ae. has prolapse of the rectum and anus.
Tumors of rectum look like decayed potato. Dreams of pools of blood.
Irritability. Breath and odor of body are offensive. Skin, darkness.
The urine has an oily pellicle. Excruciating muscular pains. Cold water
causes shock.
CLINICAL - Anus, prolapse, patulous. Breasts, painful.

Abdomen - Painfulness of abdomen to contact along the median line.
Belly hard, swollen, dropsical. Pain after eating, spasmodic pains, as
though the bowels became twisted together, rumbling. Flatulence. Pain,
as if sprained, in right groin. Stitch in right groin near inguinal
ring.
Back - Swelling of muscles of neck. Violent beating in spine,
early, when lying. Prickling sensation in spine. Stinging pain.
Sensation of weariness in whole back. Stiffness in muscles of back.
Tingling in sacrum. Prickling in psoas muscles. Pain in lumbar
vertebra, impeding walking.
Breasts - Breasts are painful, especially when raising arm.
Chest - Oppression in chest. Tearing in chest. Prickling as from a
thousand pins on the inner surface of sternum. Violent stitching pain
above right breast. Congestions to chest. Acute pain in the sides like
a stitch.
Ears - Ringing in the left ear.
Eyes - Prickling about the lids, the surface of which is red.
Spasmodic contraction and twitching of left upper lid. Burning in lids.
Prickling and burning in eyes. Congestion of the conjunctiva. Profuse
lachrymation, on waking.
Face - Face hot and red. Red pimples on cheeks. Desquamation of
face. Face pale, bloodless. Swollen, especially about eyelids, nearly
closing them. Bluish-black, fetid ulcer of left cheek. Upper lip is
bleeding, cracked.
Female - Twisting pains through uterus. Feeling of dislocation in
hip-joint with pain in womb after a slight exertion. Flatulence presses
on uterus. Menstrual blood rose-colored. Suppression of the menses.
Menses smelling of foul fish. Small pimples and intolerable itching of
labia. Spasmodic pains in uterus. Burning and itching in vagina.
Food - Canine hunger. Salt taste. Taste of raw potatoes. Food
tastes as bitter as gall. Great desire for spirits and oranges. Burning
thirst.
Head - Heat in head, evening. Heaviness of head. Catarrhal
dullness. Lancinations, as if brain would burst open. Sensation of
water splashing in head. Headache at noon, worse by the smell of
spirits. Painful sensitiveness of scalp and roots of hair, cannot bear
combing.
Heart - Weight and pain in heart region. Lancinations in heart.
Palpitations of heart. Pulse is irregular, sometimes weak, hard and
tense.
Kidneys - Region of bladder distended. Difficult urination. Heat
and pain in urethra after urinating. Constant urination while at stool.
Urine reddish, mingled with mucus. Urine is very thick, soapy, turbid,
of a dingy yellow with copious white sediment.
Limbs - Joints swollen and very painful. Sense of weariness in all
the limbs. Inclination to stretch. Heat in hands. Acute pains in
hip-joint caused by least motion. Feeling of dislocation of hip-joint.
Legs edematous. Shuddering in right leg.
Lungs - Constriction and difficulty of breathing. Hoarseness on
walking. In trachea, tearing, prickling with cough. Cough with
expectoration of yellow mucus, at night. Dry cough, day and night.
Expectoration of lumps of black blood, early in the morning. Constant
involuntary sighing. After eating choking and difficult breathing
caused by dryness of mouth.
Male - Weight in right testicle all day.
Mouth - Dry mouth. Tongue pale. Tongue swollen, cracked, early in
the morning. Tongue coated white or yellowish white. Tongue yellowish
along the median line. Prickling in right half of tongue. Breath
horribly fetid.
Nose - Repeated sneezing, followed by feeble cough. Nosebleeds.
Pressure at root of nose. Smell of blood.
Rectum - Frequent urging to stool. Has to strain until tears come.
Hard, large, lumpy stool, with violent burning in anus and rectum.
Constipation. Copious greenish-yellow diarrhea. Violent colic previous
to stool. Alternate protrusion and retraction of rectum during stool.
Prolapsed rectum. Contraction of anal sphincter. Acute pain in anus.
Great heat in anus.
Sensations - Of water splashing on head, as if brain were leaping
in skull, (on stooping). As of something sticking in throat. As if
there were a fleshy growth in throat. As if a spring unrolled in left
hypochondrium. As if a hollow body were turning rapidly in chest. Of
stoppage in trachea. Of something becoming detached from sacrum.
Skin - Skin is tender. Rose-colored patches appear and as suddenly
vanish. Small red pimples cause violent itching.
SOLanum TUB. AEGROTANS
Sleep - Irresistible drowsiness. Restless sleep. Starting from
sleep, as in a fright. Sleepless. Confused dreams, about fires,
revolution, corpses, thieves. Amorous dream. Dreams about men who
become transformed to talking animals.
Stomach - Belchings followed by rumbling in stomach. Sour
belchings causing a cough. Acidity, bitterness, and gulping-up, after
eating. Pain in stomach, with red face, after breakfast. Spasmodic
pains, griping-tearing at night.
Teeth - Swelling of mucous membrane of the inner margin of the two
incisors. Teeth loose and very painful. Gums, especially lower, spongy,
oozing blood. Teeth covered with white mucus.
Temperature - Chilliness and sensation of internal coldness. Heat
all over with sweat. Fever and afterwards dropsical appearance. Violent
paroxysms of heat. Alternate burning heat and chilliness, at night.
Sweat all over, early is morning, in bed, cold night-sweat. The sweat
makes the bed smell of potatoes.
Throat - Mucus accumulates in throat. Feeling as of a fleshy
growth in throat. Feeling as if something sticking in throat. Fauces
and mouth inflamed, ulcerated in patches. Inflamed fauces, unable to
swallow saliva.
COMMENTS - The symptoms of the Sol-t-ae. proving were pretty
severe and one of the most important: Prolapse of the rectum has been
confirmed by the poisoning cases. A man and three children ate boiled
diseased potatoes and among their symptoms were these: “Pain of an
acute character was referred to the region of the anus, which on
examination was found perfectly patulous and exquisitely tender to the
touch.
Two of the four patients had prolapsed anus, which was probably
caused by the violent and ineffectual efforts to discharge the contents
of the rectum. There had not been an evacuation of the bowels, nor had
they passed water, except in drops and with extreme suffering, for six
days. On introducing the finger into the rectum, which caused acute
pain, it was found that the intestine was completely filled to within
an inch of the orifice with a solid substance.”
The foul odor of the diseased potato is reproduced in the breath
and body odor of the patients. Lips cracked and raw, gums bleeding
tongue coated, thick, cracked, throat inflamed and ulcerated with
sensation of something sticking in it or a fleshy growth. In one
poisoning case a condition of noma of left cheek was induced.

is not the remedy I'm looking for. The one I'm looking for is for
behaviour problems in children with ADHD, etc. If I remember correctly,
it is made from a rotten potato. Although I may be wrong about the source.

I would add the emphasis on the levels of being censorious, critical to the
point of being destructive and can be violent - a lot of fears especially
about having things stolen (sees thieves and robbers - they might sleep with
their valuable possessions nearby) and this gives rise to the fear and
anxiety on waking (starting from sleep). Very loquacious remedy, highly
delusional as well and another really smelly one

Maybe Solanium which is obtained from a number of the Solaniums - isn't it
this that makes 'green' potatoes even more poisonous. A convulsive rx not
sure about ADHD although I could easily see the application of many of the
solanums in ADHD due to the poison level of this family - lots of terrors,
restlessness delirium, mania, convulsions, inability to sleep, and the
attention has a lot of trouble being fixed on anything because of a feeling
of being crowded out. Are you sure it's not Sol tub ae?

Sol-t-ae.

Diseased potato. Solanum tuberosum. N.O. Solanaceae.

The potato originally comes from the Andes region and arrived in Spain in 1565 through the agency of a Spanish king. Shortly afterwards, an early-flowering potato species with a yellowish-white tubercles was imported from Chili to Ireland. Ireland was the first European country in which the potato became the staple diet. In 1846 the sudden inroad of potato blight led to the fearful famine in Ireland, which resulted in the death of thousands, and which further increased the mass emigration to America.

In England, "the Puritans opposed their cultivation, because no mention of them could be found in the Bible, and it was not until the middle of the eighteenth century that potatoes became common in this country as a vegetable ... On the Continent, the adoption of the potato as a vegetable met with considerable prejudice, and it did not become a general article of food for some time after it was in general use here." [Grieve]

The potato plant puts out underground shoots that form tubercles. The crop must be harvested before new plants sprout from the buds [eyes] or the tubercles. They cannot be stored for long after harvest because they will sprout anyway after a relatively short time. They must be stored in a dark place [nightshade], since in the light the shoots develop a toxic gluco-alkaloid called solanine. This process can be stopped by means of chemical treatment. The shoots are poisonous, as are unripe or green potatoes. Fresh ripe potatoes contain very little solanine, while mouldy potatoes contain much more.

Apart from this, this tubercle is quite a good food. Admittedly, in the long term the potato's abundance of starch makes its eaters fat, but it also provides them with vitamin C, calcium, potassium and phosphorus, even if half of it is lost if potatoes are peeled and then boiled. A popular application is to drink freshly-squeezed potato juice for excessive digestive acids. The raw juice contains no alkaloids, although it does have a large amount of potash salts.

The potato has many other uses than as a food: methylated spirits, starch, binding agent, cosmetic creams, cleaner of silks.

Anthroposophy has a number of serious objections to the potato culture.

Potato starch is more difficult to digest than grain starch, and affects "that part of the nervous system that is the foundation for creative, artistic thinking and fantasy" with the result that we are left to think with "only the front part of the brain. This, with its more differentiated cells and localised capacity, is more where objective thought takes place, i.e. the capacity for scientific or matter-of-fact abstract thought that, if it is not extended to the humanities, simply supports materialistic thought." "Internal creative thought indeed deteriorated in Europe from the moment that the potato became the staple food." The link between the individuality and the physical side also suffers if children are fed mainly potatoes. "If people notice that they are becoming sloppy, forgetful, inattentive and sleepy, it can usually be connected to eating too many potatoes. A counterbalance must be created using sugar, vegetables and fruit. A recipe that originated from a healthy folk instinct that sensed this problem mixes potatoes with apples. In Austria this recipe is called, very characteristically, 'heaven and earth'."

The increased susceptibility of the potato crop to countless diseases is explained as "the decline of a cultivated crop that has fulfilled its mission." [Hauschka]

Viewed in this light, a strange proving such as that of the "diseased potato' acquires a certain depth. It most probably involves potato blight, a destructive disease of the potato caused by the parasitic fungus Phytophthora infestans. As happened in the last century in Ireland, the disease can destroy the entire potato harvest, with far-reaching effects. When affected by the disease, the leaves and tubercles turn black.

He describes the case of a 70-year-old man with rhythm disturbances, who suffered from palpitations of the heart as soon as he began to eat. After taking Sol-t-ae.

A second case involves that of a 26-year-old woman with many fears [fear of the dark, water, choking, narrow spaces] and anxious dreams [of being followed and that her hand or fingers were cut off]. She was cured by first receiving Stram., then Sol-t-ae. and lastly Stram. again. Another case, described by Bakker in Allgemeine Hom. Zeitung, 207, 1962, is that of a woman with pruritus vulvae agg

Joy; I remember reading about a remedy that had a lot of behaviour and
attention deficit symptoms. I don't remember the name of the remedy,
but I seem to recall that it was made from potato. It is definitely not
the Sol-tub-ae
