My secretary also reports that her watches - whether wind-up or battery
operated stop.

Wind-up stop within a day
Battery operated ones a little longer.

House clocks are also affected.

One of the things my secretary said was that often when she touches metal
things she gets a shock.

Is this common to all the other people who reported this phenomenon?

I suspect it can be - it is "downloading" excess electricity. We talk
about getting a shock from something, but it is our own electricity.
