Flu deaths & an amazing coincidence, reg:
Hi..,
The ongoing discussion about flu deaths is interesting. I think I can add a
thing or two with it. Because one need to do research on a particular aspect
of the story too. In 2000-01 in Kerala, India, an epidemic of Leptospirosis
(rat fever) broke out. The first year alone saw a death toll of more than
250. People was so alarmed that they started rushing to institutions at the
slightest suspicion of a fever, most of them was viral influenza.
Interestingly at the same year deaths from simple viral influenza was also
substantially escalated! This got people further scared -to death- and an
undeclared national emergency prevailed in these parts for many months. It
is not an understatement if it is said that they were terrified! One
(inter)nationally acclaimed microbiologist-virologist appeared in the front
page of a very prominent news paper and announced that the peculiar deadly
disease is having such a character that even if one feels the disease is
under control they may suddenly succumb to death in the fifth/sixth day of
illness!!
However when we (www.ihma.org.in) studied the problem in detail a very
interesting fact emerged. During these entire season only a very few deaths
have reported from people who took homoeopathic medicines. While there were
confirmed reports of complete cure of even sero positive leptospira cases
with homoeopathic treatment alone. So in the next season when similar (or
looking more intense) outbreaks were on the anvil we started a massive
homoeopathic prophylactic programme, which gradually gained momentum, even
though at first we have to face much obstacles to it, so that the government
machinery also started taking part in it. The program me included dispensing
of preventive homoeopathic medicines as well public awareness programmes.
About (only) half the population was covered with preventives.
Surprisingly the death toll was much lower in the year and the coming ones
till this and the campaign still continues with a less vigour. As said above
ONLY about half the population was covered by homoeopathic prophylactic
medicines. So there should be (roughly) about half the number of deaths. So
there was something more to it?
The rest of our work included as said educating public about the real nature
of the illness and need of being in a panic free mind. it should be also
noted that much of the deaths (of current and previous year) have occurred
due to circulatory collapse following a lowered platelet count or due to
haptic/renal failure.
The final analysis revealed an interesting and globally significant fact.
Almost all the deaths have occurred due to over medications. Especially of
powerful antibiotics and heavy doses paracetamol, which are capable of
lowering the platelets as well as leading to hepatic/renal failure. I my
self has seen written allopathic prescription given to viral fever patients
containing three different brands of paracetamol (so that a daily dose of up
to 5000 mg is taken, where as about 2000mg per day is given at the most in
ordinary cases) in addition two two different antibiotics, in a single
stretch.
The same is true about the dengue epidemic also broke out in the next (!)
year.
One should also keep in mind the situation in Kerala that here actually
Homoeopathy is not an alternative therapy but a mainstream and first choice
treatment for a large number of population. The status was also climbing up
further when this happened. Also read with this the secret information we
got from the (inter)nationally acclaimed association of allopathic doctors
here that they have envisaged a programme aptly named as "Operation Getting
Back (the patients)" from the year 2000 onwards!
So I suggest it is high time one pay attention to the fact of overdosing of
medicines especially of toxic ones and the (reported) death toll of any
epidemic. With proper public awareness campaign mere lowering of these
toxins alone will bring down the casualties, as from my first hand
experience.

Re: Flu deaths & an amazing coincidence, reg:
According to Sandra Perko, in her book, The Homeopathic Treatment of
Influenza, aspirin use WAS a large part of the picture in the deaths, but for a
different reason. She found that the death rate had an interesting pattern. The
vast majority of deaths in the US from that epidemic were in people age
20-44, people in the prime of their life. The death rates of children and the
elderly, who usually have very high death rates from influenza, wasn't that
high.
At that time, aspirin, being so new on the market, wasn't considered safe
for children and the elderly. So they didn't get it.
The people age 20-44 took aspirin and then developed conditions that looked
a lot like what we now call Reye's syndrome, which can develops in children
who have a viral illness and take aspirin, which is why parents are vigorously
cautioned to not give their children aspirin if they have a high fever.
So it may be that the common treatment for that flu, aspirin, was a major
factor in the huge death rate.
People who got conventional treatment had a death rate of 30-70%, people who
got no treatment had a death rate of about 15% and people who saw homeopaths
had a death rate of less than 1%.
So we need to get the word out about what homeopathy can do for influenza.
And then be ready to serve our communities when people start to come to us.
BTW, is anyone setting up or planning to set up acute clinics for
nonpatients?
I'm working up a plan to serve my small town in Wisconsin, including people
who aren't currently my patients, if the flu really hits us hard.
Ideas on how to do this?
I think this would be a great topic for discussion.
Thanks,
Marybeth

Hi Marybeth,
I also would love to hear how (or whether) folks do this. I think that any
non-licensed prescribers in the US will have to be very careful about the
"practicing medicine without a license" issue... Personally I wouldn't
worry about prescribing for people I know well and can trust to be in touch
with me as needed, but esp. with people I am less well connected to, I'd
want to be very careful about explaining that if this or that happens they
*must* call a doctor -- even tho it might pain me to say that, I wouldn't
want to leave either myself or the patient open to unnecessary risk if
anything went wrong.
The issues of giving aspirin and param, er, what I know as Tylenol, and the
role of fever, and proper supportive measures for a sick person, I think are
areas where patient education would go a very long way. (I keep fantasizing
about starting a study group, and that would be one of my big drums to
bang!) I'm thinking we should keep little files of articles such as the
ones Sheri and others have sent, to pass along to clients and others.
What have your thoughts been so far about how you would set this up and put
your name out?

Marybeth,
Another homeopath and I tried running a flu clinic a couple of years ago.
To our amazement, people who would have come just to hear us speak stayed
away out of fear of catching something from those who might be sick! Rather
than run a flu clinic, you might want to give public talks on
homeoprophylaxis and common remedies for flu symptoms.
Peace,

Hi MArybeth,
You may have already thought of it, but the best way to start is to
have a genus epidemicus kit available that people can buy/get a
remedy dose from you and take it immediately.
IF you get information of the symptoms of the present epidemic, a
group of genus remedies can be decided on. I remember that last year
at this time I was prescribing MErc Sol, Ars Alb, Nux VOmica, Hepar
Sulph for the flu.
In the last couple of weeks, there seems to be a stomach flu going
around in the US. Patients have needed Phos (overwhelmingly!), Nux,
Bell, Cyclamen (!), to name a few.
HOpe this helps!
