Digest Number 1725/lord of the rings

Post by Theresa Partington »

...and Frodo
Anxiety anticipating an engagement
Fear that someone is behind him
Fear of something creeping out of every corner
Delusion he is doomed
Sensation of unbearable inner emptiness
Thoughts vanishing of (no punctuation in my Agrawal - so anyone's guess!)
Ravenous appetite
Desires beer
Likes smoking
Hair in unusual places.
Uncovers feet
Dwarfish children
Adventurer

Frodo would undoubtedly have been better off at the seaside, too, in my
opinion.

However sex does not appear to be a major issue for Frodo and perhaps he is
too determined and focussed for Medorrhinum anyway.

I've been watching from the sidelines, but I DO have to comment here....
I think that these three "symptoms" are normal for ALL Hobbits and,
therefore, are NOT symptoms.
Most important to realize when treating a population that you look
for the "normal" of the population before you decide what is strange
and unusual.

If he did NOT have hair in unusual places.... well THAT would be a sx!

Is this a symptom when you *know* that someone (who wants to kill you) *is*
behind you?
Ditto as per first
These aren't these direct "toxicity" of the "drug" (ring), rather than
peculiar to Frodo?
:-))) Yes, but all of these are normal/common to the "species"!
Yes, a bit... Even tho he became one reluctantly...
What, with no hills to burrow into???
Was he determined and focussed before he was given a life-and-death job to
do? But more -- he has none of the tendency for extremes that is so
characteristic of Med...

I dunno, for the moment I'm sticking with calc.
:-))

Whew, thanks Julian!
I have started to wonder -- are we looking for the remedy that would
"really" treat Frodo were he a patient, or are we looking for an archetypal
image of a remedy? If the latter, then we can use these below symptoms, and
also can use symptoms of the Ring's direct action (the division of will,
vankshing thoughts, etc.). But if we're pretending Frodo is a "real
patient", then all that goes out the window -- doesn't it??? And heck, it's
*normal* to be "fearful" when you're on a suicide mission, and to think
someone is behind you when there *is*, and etc...

So what are we doing -- archetype, or "real patient"? (Actually, I think it
would be fun to do both, so long as we keep the two separate.)
