Homoeopathy & Suffering.

Post by Jagannath Chatterjee »

Dear Doctors,
I think Venkat's comments, that homoeopathy is not as popular as it deserves to be or that in some parts of the world it is not practised properly indicates that God wants people to suffer, may have some basis.
In this connection I would like to recount an incident in the life of Swami Brahmananda, the first President of the Ramakrishna Mission. In his time the famous homoeopath of Bengal Dr M Bhattacharya was very much devoted to the Mission. Unfortunately Dr Bhattacharya's wife passed away untimely leaving the doctor devastated. He was so heartbroken that he wanted to donate his homoeopathic pharmaceutical factory to the Mission and take to the life of a monk. The senior monks of the Order took this request of his and presented it before Swami Brahmananda hoping he would sanction the same and the Mission would have a ready made tool to serve the needy. But Swami Brahmananda flatly refused the order stating that Dr Bhattacharya was suffering from temporary detachment and would regret his decision later. No amount of persuasion by both Dr Bhattacharya and the monks could prevail on the Swami.
Years later the personal attendant of the Swami, Swami Apurbananda, asked Brahmanandaji the real reason for his adamant stand on the issue. This was because Swami Apurbananda knew that the Swami was very much interested in homoeopathy and occasionaly practiced it himself with great success.
Swami Bramhanandaji's reply was very strange. He said, "You see, every person has to suffer from the consequences of his present action and also his karma, i.e. actions from previous births. Homoeopathy has the power to go against karma, so it cannot be sanctioned!". What a tremendous compliment this is for homoeopathy coming from a spiritual giant like Swami Brahmananda, considered to the the spiritual heir of Sri Ramakrishna himself !
That karma is a major factor behind many incurable diseases has been acknowledged in a recent book on cancer by one of the famous oncologists of India. The curious thing is that his statement has not sparked off any debate.
Another interesting fact is that the Ramakrishna Mission has recently received a huge donation to start a homoeopathic college and hospital by a NRI allopathic physician. I really don't know why the Mission has kept the project in the backburner.
Regards,
Jagannath.

What a great story !

It is interesting how homeopathy can sometimes apparently dissolve
karma.

But then isn't it true that enlightenment occurs in an instant?

Complimentary comments or not this is a belief that `I certainly do
not share, and one which seems to exclude LOVE and a bunch of other
good stuff. If homeopathy has the ability to change Karma surely this
is itself Karma? So why has this been interpreted as 'going against'
karma?

I would tentatively suggest that Karma is understood within the context
of homeopathy as miasms.

Perhaps David Little is better placed to further comment

I think it is important to address this , if this belief is restricting
access to homeopathy!

Dear Dr King,
I fully agree with you that this "Karma" stuff should not stand in the way of homoeopathy. I would appreciate a detailed mail from anybody on the subject so that I can forward it to the Ramakrishna Mission headquarters at Kolkata, India, who seem to be sitting on the offer of a NRI allopath to open a homoeopathy college and hospital to be managed by the Mission.
The karma part is valid, no doubt. We often see patients turning to homoeopathy as a last resort apparently having suffered enough to reduce the load of their past karma. Then there are patients who do not understand the working of homoeopathy and leave the treatment midway even when they are genuinely progressing. I, for example, had to suffer for decades trying to locate a good homoeopath even when I had myself taken the pain to do some self study and understand the science.
There is also another curious (laughable?) aspect I noticed, the connection between astrology and healing. In my own case I found out that my quest for a good doctor found fruition only after the bad phase according to my horoscope came to an end. I have read about this factor in many astrological journals. Ayurveda takes note of this factor.
I have also come across well meaning Indian homoeopaths who ask their patients to pray to God so that the cure may take less time. A device to go around karma?

Another question I have. The physicians duty is not only to cure but also to ensure that their patients stay healthy. What do homoeopaths do to ensure this? We all know homoeopathy involves morality. But patients don't expect their doctors to lecture them on such a subject. Is this why most homoeopaths avoid exposing the theory of homoeopathy to their patients?
I once had a very peculiar experience with a friend of mine. He was extremely fond of his wife and often came to me with symptoms of weakness and lethargy. (He knew that I knew "something" about homoeopathy). I used to suggest Acid Phos and he used to get relief temporarily. Then we had the following conversation;
"Why doesn't this damned weakness go away permanently?"
"How can I say? Go consult a doctor."
"Do you think this has something to do with my sex habits?"
"Maybe"
"Do you know of something that could solve the problem permanently?"
"Maybe"
"So I can continue to have sex as often as I like without feeling the weakness?"
"Guess you'll have to cut down somewhat"
"I can't, that's the problem"
"Well the medicine may help you cut down"
"You mean it will lower my sex drive?"
"It'll make it normal"
"Hey, I am just fine. Keep me out, ok?"
"You asked"
Regards,
Jagannath.

Dear Jagannath,
I am wondering how the hospital views the karma issue. There are so at least several standard but different ways to veiw karma.
Blessings,
