vaccinations in US in 1955?

Does anyone know what vaccinations were being given to children in the US in
1955? Was there anything besides polio?

Polio vax only came out in 1955 and not all got it then - Salk injectable
(1955 was the year of the Cutter incident when the vaccine gave so many
polio as wasn't totally killed)

Can you offer an opinion what would have been the most likely *first* shot
given to a two-year-old in 1955? It was not smallpox as there is no scar,
but that's all I know.

At that time DPT would have been given earlier than '2 years old' in most areas of the US - somewhere around 3 to 6 months old. Some doctors would follow with 'boosters' of tetanus (among other things) starting at 2 years. Smallpox was commonly given between 2 and 6 years old - but most often the year of entering school. You would not always have a scar - sometimes they would say it 'did not take' - which could be a matter of method of delivery (let's just say everyone was not trained equally), quality of 'material' they were using, or the individual child. If it did not 'take' it was common to have it done over with a very 'heavy hand', but some children escaped the second 'treatment' and would have no scar. Without the distinctive scar you could not obtain any travel papers during that era.

When did they start immunizing against diptheria and pertussis? I was a baby
in the US in the mid 50's and remember frequent jabs -- more than just the
smallpox, and polio was given orally.
