Homoeopathy in India.

Post by Jagannath Chatterjee »

Dear Donna,
Kind regards.Your mail is not going to put me in the apology mode. You must understand that a doctors perspective and a patients perspective have different undertones. The doctor prescribes on the basis of symptoms of the patient but it is the patient who bears the real brunt of the disease. As a practitioner of the science that says, "Treat the patient not the disease" I expected a more qualified response from you.
I have nothing against homoeopathy, rather my suffering of 43 years has made me acutely aware that homoeopathy knows more about disease than all the other pathies put together. It is a complete science and the only modification it needs is in view of the suppressive and damaging treatment metted out by the modern practititioners which have obliterated most of the original symptoms of disease and also introduced new drug induced symptoms. A modern homoeopath is thus forced not only to study homoeopathy but he must also keep abreast of the side effects of modern drugs so that he can distinguish between the real symptoms and the drug induced ones. Not an easy task.

As Shannon has rightly guessed I am from India. Here most of the homeopaths feel they can manage without detailed case taking and records. They flare up when an educated patient tries to reason with them. So they tend to hop from one remedy to another and ultimately blame the patient for not "cooperating" with them. I once again repeat that they do not study the basic texts properly. They have some idea of the main characteristics of the polychrests and try to manage with that.
When I first visited the many homeopathic book stores here and asked for the standard books the shop owners felt it a bit odd. They enquired whether I was a student of the homoeopathic college situated here. When I said I was not they nodded appreciatively and said, "We had guessed so, for these students don't have the habit of going through the books you mentioned, they prefer guide books which helps them in passing their exams". This is a clear vindication of my stand.
I had tried to learn homoeopathy by correspondence. When I wrote to the many colleges in India who teach homoeopathy the standard reply was that "modern homoeopathy" could not be taught by correspondence and that the science had been "upgraded" to bring it at par with "modern trends in healing". Many of them also sent a prospectus of the course they were teaching and a list of the Professors they employed. They proudly pointed out that they had qualified MBBS and MD doctors to teach the courses! In the prospectus I found that homoeopathy constituted roughly two and a half years of the six year courses the students were subjected to. They also had to undergo internship in allopathic hospitals as their own hospitals had very few patients. No wonder!
One of the Professors in the homoeopathy college where I stay is a reputed MD in allopathic medicine who I had once visited for pain relief from a difficult dental problem (ultimately it required maxio facial surgery). When this doctor came to know that I had so far managed the pain with homoeopathic medicines, he was livid. He cursed homoeopathy, the homoeopathic college and the students whom he dubbed as "morons". In a fit of rage he asked me what "that fellow Hahnemann" had to say about dental diseases. I said that Hahnemann put dental decay and caries under the tubercular miasm. The Professor was stunned for a moment, probably at that moment the allopaths too were veering to the same conclusion, but not willing to take it lying down he said, "The guy is mad for tuberculosis has been eradicated from the country". We know what a far cry from reality this statement is.
My faith in homoeopathy lasted the full 25 years not because of sporadic help from homoeopathy as you have suggested but because of my faith in the words of Hahnemann, Kent, Clark, and the myriad other stalwarts who form the bulwark of classical homoeopathy. That faith is not from mere intellectual interest in the subject but as I have pointed out earlier, it mirrored my 43 years experience of chronic disease and the various symptoms my body had projected from time to time.
I fully understand the value of homoeopathy and so my outbursts are not against the science but against those who fail to understand the true spirit behind it and try to distort it. My anger is also against those so called champions of the science who feel that classical homoeopathy (and Hahnemann with it) is useless and who seek to "rejuvenate" the science with "allopathic expertise".
I know that many, maybe all, of the practitioners of this list are very good homoeopaths. The doctor who treats me now is also a part of this list as I found from the members listing.
Regards,
Jagannath.

Joining issue. It is a highly regrettable thing that
the term" homeopathy's limitations are that of the
homeopath" is coming true in one of the lands that
took the words of the master to its heart.

I think the lineage of those illustrious homeopaths of
my land is shrinking. y'day I met a homeopath who is
madly classical. He said of the lot he knows, only
about 2 to 3% are single remedy prescribers.

The problem of English. If I see a h'path struggle for
words in English or speaks bad grammar, I will rather
quit his office than waste my time. Almost all the
quality literature in H'pathy is in English.

Almost all h'paths have wall hangings of Hahnemann(of
all people) supplied by combo companies.

But to correct ourselves is the first condition I laid
down. One scoundrel less! Then treat yourself with the
best possible knowledge. If you are lucky, the doctor
will appear when the patient is ready.

I think Jagannath is dead right as a patient. But not
as an insider. Instead of cursing darkness, lighting a
candle would have been noble. That is one's choice.

I long for the day when we will have classicists
practicing at every street. But I thing God will not
permit that. He wants people to suffer.
Regards
Venkat

The problem is not just in homeopathy. In India in most of the
professions we have lack of integrity, lack of honesty and the
medical profession in particular has gone to dogs. There are people
without ethics and this is the fundamental problem. That there are
fewer single medicine prescribers is not due to the fact that they
do not know how to do it. In most of the cases it is because there
is not enough time to do justice to good prescribing. When one's
prescribing depends on not how much quality service you provide but
on seeing as many patients as possible you want to cover as many
possibilities as possible. Covering all bases becomes important,Not
that this is the reason in all cases.
But I have seen many prescribers who do excellent work most of the
time with good single medicine prescribing.

Once again it depends how they get into the profession. In India lot
of times the profession is selected by parents for their children.
People get into these without any interest or inclination, Then what
can we expect. In West that is not the case. Still if you look at
the numbers we produce 2-3% is a substantial amount numberwise.

Ultimately whatever succeeds will stabilize...Every system finds its
equilibrium...

Well, the other view is that sometimes we need our suffering in order to
learn what is not working -- and change it!

Speaking as a mama, I know I see that in *my* kids... And myself (sigh)...
