is it possible that other conventional medications she's on or has been taking are also affecting her response to calcium and could account for the strange symptoms? I have found that patients of that age are usually taking a confusing array of conventional meds, often with clear contra-indications in the patient.

Re: hyperparathyroid
Good thought, but no. The cramping thing started when she was pretty young,
but she was not taking any meds of any kind except Synthroid and then
Armour, starting a couple of years ago. Well, vitamins and etc., but
nothing that I can recognize as trouble. It looks like the parathyroid
imbalance was discovered during the same investigations that uncovered her
(then quite extreme) low thyroid.
