Strange Symptom?
I need help repertorizing an unusual symptom:
This woman reports having the hiccoughs during sleep at night. They are
loud and wake up her husband and eventually her too... They don¹t occur
every night, rather 2-3 times per month.
Has anyone heard of having hiccoughs during sleep? Dr. R, does this mean
anything from a medical point of view?
Thanks
Sara

flatulence.

Re: Strange Symptom?
Thanks Joy for that.
She does not have any dyspepsia or flatulence at all. Her other digestive
symptom is constipation....
I will take a look at Pulsatilla now....
Thanks

Re: Strange Symptom?
It could be due to some gastric reflux problem.
Is there any specific food << on those days when she has the
hiccoughs? Does she go to sleep on full stomach etc.
Hiccough , during sleep - I have merc.cor and cina (knerr)
Hiccough during night - Hyos, Puls
Cina and Hyos look good.
Is there any worm trouble, any allergies etc?
Probably you would need some other symptom to arrive

Re: Strange Symptom?
I can answer SOME of these questions.
She did not come for any digestive problems. I already wrote that her only
digestive complaint is a tendency to be constipated. Her reason for the
consultation is menopause (hot flashes and some insomnia, that¹s how the
story of the hiccoughs came up).
As to lifestyle : She goes to sleep around 11PM or before and dinner is at
7PM or at the latest at 7:30PM. Dinner is always a very light meal, her
main meal is lunch.
If I can¹t find the similimum easily, I will definitely have her log her
food intake to find out whether there is any particular food that creates
this!
Now that Merc. C comes up in several of the reps, I will call her and ask
some more about a tooth issue. She mentioned some upcoming dental work
because she has a loose tooth. Mercury has loose teeth. Something else to
look into.
THANKS!!!

Re: Strange Symptom?
From RefWorks:
Hiccup or hiccough night (16) : apoc.5120, arn.5120, ars.5120, bell.5120, carb-an.5120, coff.5120, Hyos.5120, lach.5120, merc.5120, merc-c.5120, ol-an.5120, phys.5120, puls.5120, Sil.5120, stram.5120, sul-ac.5120
If it is more the lying down than the night that creates the hiccup, look at compression of the pneumogastric nerve, posterior mediastinal tumor comes to mind.

Re: Strange Symptom?
Hi,
You may like to consider this too,
[ktp4 - Headache - Zincum valerianicum] With uterine or ovarian trouble,
hiccough and sleeplessness, of piercing and stabbing nature, extends to
spine, often in hysterical females.
[kr2 - Morphinum sulphuricum] -first sleep (hiccough; and other respiratory
complaints); night (urticaria and other painful skin-symptoms); climacteric
period; sleep aggravates all symptoms like Lachesis.
[vml3 - Amylenum nitrosum] Desire to stretch in morning; stretching at night
in sleep; stretching and hiccough; stretching and incessant yawning;
stretching amel..
with best wishes,
V.T.Yekkirala.
