case of the geographic tongue
case of the geographic tongue
Or at least that is what this 5 yr old mum calls it!! Ever since birth she has had period of time when her tongue gets patches where it is red, without the surface layer on . It isn't cracked, it doesn't bleed and causes discomfit to the child when she eats or drinks anything sour. Other than that she seems a healthy child and I am finding difficulty coming up with a constitutional rx.
During Mum's pregnancy with her all sorts went wrong. She became diabetic and had to go on insulin., She was very stressed as her father was diagnosed as having cancer and although she returned from abroad and lived with her parents he died a month before the birth. She said that staying at her parents was very stressful because her mother blamed everything on her and she had never been able to answer back to her mother (Staph?). During a routine scan it was noticed that this child had an enlarged kidney and for the first 6 months of her life was on a low dose antibiotic. When born - forceps - this child had a feeding tube for 24 hours as they wanted to check the child's blood sugar contantly because of the insulin Mum had been on. The child was breast fed for 6 months . She was also given a cream to make the entrance to the urethra larger although she did appear to pass urine OK.
Milestones - late, no teeth until 14 months, walked at 14 months, talked a lot later. There appeared to be a time when she stopped trying to talking a move when she was about 18 months.
She has a opaque white round spot in her sclera which goes a little into the iris. It is being monitored.
No fears, loves animals and bugs crawling on her. Has to have company , even if it is an animal. Initially shy and then fine. She didn't appear to be able to cope with the normal educational toys I have for children of her age. Doesn't read yet but seemed to know her alphabet. She could write her name. Mum doesn't think her concentration or memory is that good. Is a very loyal friend- walks away if her younger sister fights with her. Very sensitive inthat she gets upset if in trouble and wants to be helpful and a good girl. Loves climbing and is a dare devil.. No temper- doesn't flare up- can be whingy.
The last 2 years at change of season- mum was vague about when , but possibly autumn , she has got a night cough and panicked about it. Mum thinks the panic was because she was hospitalised twice when she was 1 or 2 for croup.
Her stool has habitually been sheep droppings type but of late more diarrhoea.
Basically she seems one healthy looking child to me - with red lips.
Has anyone come across a tongue like this before. It has been suggested to me that she may need extra vitamins of Magnesium and zinc. There is only one remedy I can find for a denuded tongue but I am not sure if this is what it is.

Wouldn't this be Glossitis. I would also put some emphasis on her slowish
learning abilities.
The B vitamin group contribute a lot to the state of one's tongue. What is
her diet like?

Re: case of the geographic tongue
I am not so sure about the relevance of the 'mapped tongue' rubric - this
usually means the whole tongue is contoured and split off into parts with
lines or fissures separating the parts, just like a 3D map. But you could
cross reference if you feel it does fit.

Re: case of the geographic tongue
Dear Joy,
A mapped tongue to me is one that looks full or line and crevices - like a map so I agree with you here. This child's tongue is pink and smooth with just one very small red patch to be seen. That's why I wondered about the Denuded rubric.

Re: case of the geographic tongue

I don't think this is an inflammation in the true sense of the word. However I found this on a Dr Lockie site:-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Glossitis
Sore tongue caused by temporary absence of papillae, the tiny protrusions that contain the taste buds; denuded of papillae, the tongue becomes dark red and inflamed; hot, spicy, acidic, or scratchy foods should be avoided. Occasionally condition is a symptom of iron-deficient Anaemia, or a lack of Vitamin Bl2, B3, biotin, or folate. Supplying the deficiency usually re-establishes normal growth of papillae.
Specific remedies to be taken 4 times daily for up to 5 days
a.. Sore, burning tongue wide red tip and red streak in middle Arsenicum 30c
b.. Whole mouth and tongue hot, dry, and red Belladonna 30c
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK the description sounds correct but not the remedies for those reasons!!!
I also found Mum seemed to think it was a genetic problem,.
Oh well it looks as if it is a constitutional job - if I can find it!!

Re: case of the geographic tongue
Dear Rochelle
This case "speaks" to me of possible cancer miasm: the spot on the iris;
love of animals; desire to be good; sensitive to reprimand ("desires the
good opinion of others", and, of course, the genetics!.
The gut/stool symptoms suggest IBS, and the denuding on the tongue is
possibly an extension of the gut topography which isn't going to be
excellent since the "good" that 6 months of breastfeeding would have
achieved was probably obviated by the antibiotics.
Agreed, the unusual tongue symptom could point to the Rx. You've been sent a
comprehensive list for geographic tongue and lac-c is there. That means you
can place lac-h there also (I find that where lac-c is in most physical
general rubrics lac-h is also a possibility).
Since you've said that no obvious constitutional Rx is apparent I'd be
inclined to attempt to restore gut function and her little personality will
then shine through. Diet restrictions/regime is an obvious desirability.
However, keeping in mind that Lac-h is a sarcode it can be used to restore
gut function if used in the lower potencies. In this situation I use LMs and
move up gradually.
However I know you don't use them, so 7C would be OK given as a NMN dose
every new moon and full moon for several months. Lac-h (like Carc) is tied
to moon phases (ie ). I've had several cases of restoration of gut
function in this way, also restoring mental function The Chinese have a
lovely saying that the stomach is the second mind and it's always lovely to
witness mental acumen improve when gut function is restored.
BTW Lac-h also has affinity for the kidneys.
If you can come up with nothing more specific I think this would be worth a
try.
kind regards
Patricia
