Treating Families and Generations

Post by Michelle Bernard »

Sorry to cross post.

Has anyone had the chance to treat several siblings and perhaps the parents
and then subsequent generations? I'm wondering if you saw a pattern in
useful remedies and then in subsequent generations some of the same remedies
and did they act differently in the subsequent generations.

Thank you,

Hello List,

Regarding the post on families and generations, I routinely construct a
Genogram with all my initial intakes. A genogram is a transgenerational
family tree that depicts family patterns, dynamics and major events (see
"Genograms: Assessment and Intervention by Monica McGoldrick et. al.,
Norton: New York, 1999). It is a wonderful format to visually map large
amounts of information with a sense of empathy and connection for healing
through homeopathy. This framework, not only "breaks the ice" but also
pulls at a common cord that we all have about "home" and legacy.

In most cases we are presented with an "individual," yet in reality we are
dealing with issues of development and relationships. Since homeopathy is
holistic, it is beneficial to see the natural part to whole patterns that
make up one's ecology. So when we focus on finding the simmillimum, we are
working from this wider perspective.

In my experience, the genogram helps me to get a clear introduction
through a personal narrative that depicts one's life patterns through a
sense of historical perspective and psychological attributes. This wider
perspective reveals many connections of learned and acquired traits;
maismatic patterns and consequent symptoms. I have found that the genogram
enhances the quest for the who, what, where, with what, why, what
modalities and time categories of a classical homeopathic assessment.

Patterns do repeat themselves in many instances i.e. abusive parental
relationships toward children leading to consequent abusive significant
adult relationships as well as other life style and learning
characteristics. Addiction problems for instance have genetic and
contextually learned components that don't automatically predict what will
occur in the next generation, but recognizing certain leanings and
possibilities is like understanding history in order not to repeat certain
negative aspects of the past. In a similar fashion remedies are not
automatic but if you contextualize one's present and past, you can see
patterns of temperaments and miasmatic influences that can facilitate
differentiating and matching of needed remedies with these patterns which
are easily found and supported in our homeopathic research and M.M.
