Hi,
Well , here is the answer.
"Formica CM every other night for 1 week and placebo for another week
more.
At the end of 11 days improvement warranted his doing some work; and the
stools had almost become normal in color and consistency. In 3 more
weeks
he considered himself almost in his former health and able to do his
farm work.
.... This case was considered hopeless by his allopaths who had advised
him
to notify all his friends desiring to see him for the last time."---
Boger.
Often times we tend to stop short of knowing the answer and be content
if it matches ours.
But that way we can't realize the real benefit of what our masters
intended us to note and
learn from their experiences. I shall try to amplify what I mean here.
This case can be worked out by the usual method of converting all the
symptoms into their
relevant rubrics and repping them, now that we have the luxury of
computers. This method I
call it the Crude and Rude Method. (CRM for short.). But that way the
remedy that is curative
will be a low ranking one while the polycrests will always appear in
high ranks. Most of the
times we miss the mark. Let us see...
With the rubrics so chosen (RADAR) and by flat rep method, we find
that formica is appearing in
20th rank and it is even getting totally eliminated if we choose the
(NBWS) Malaria as causative symptom.
If we choose the small remedies method of repping ,then only we are
getting it right in first rank as shown below.
Small remedies Method.(Radar).
This analysis contains 521 remedies and 18 symptoms.
Intensity is considered

Now let us see how to work this out by Boger's method.
From among the symptoms choose a "complete symptom" which is well
defined by
Location (Abdomen, Liver); Sensation (Pain , sore);and Modality
(>jarring).
Consider the relevant rubric which has only 9 remedies listed against
it. (Radar)
ABDOMEN - PAIN - Liver - jarring agg.
bell.;3 bry.;2 chin.;1 form.;2 lach.;3 nat-s.;2 nit-ac.;1 sel.;1 sil.;3
Now there is no point in considering the Abdomen anasarcous; feet
oedematous; ; much gas in bowels. Feet and hands fall asleep, face looks
dark and withered;etc which are all common to liver disorders and so
useless for arriving at the remedy. Let us see what are the
constitutional symptoms present in this case. (Please read the recent
beautiful post by David Little on this subject to know what are
"constitutional concomitants" in any case). "The constitutional
concomitants are general symptoms that are not part of the disease
pathology but they do reflect the patient's individual state."
We see that the pt has : Much drowsiness, worse before storms; Easily
chilled , gets chilly before snow storms.
The pt himself gets worse before snow storms and that decides the remedy
to be given.
You can see that only formica comes out through this filter.( SLEEP -
SLEEPINESS - weather - storms - before has only 3 remedies ,formica
being one while it is also present in 2nd degree in the rubric GENERALS
- SNOW AIR - agg).
Now by way of confirmation let us see if the CHARECTERISTIC symptoms of
the remedy are also present in the case. Read Formica MM and the foamy
stools are very much present in there which further confirms his choice
of formica. The point to be noted here is that formica would still be
the smm even if this do not tally.
"A strange sensations, a marked discharge or discoloration, and a local
modality can be part of a redline characteristic. They are still
important but the constitutional concomitants are often the defining
factor. As the modalities are often the defining factors of the local
complaint - the constitution concomitants are often the defining factor
of the totality of the symptoms."- (DL)
Thus we can see that Boger may have used just 3 rubrics against the 18
nos we used in the CRM (and still got it wrong;- formica comes way
beyond in 20 th rank).
Important points to be noted from this case are:
1.)Agg before snow storms and the light foaming stools were considered
as the
most deciding modalities/concomitants by Boger and the confidence with
which he
prescribed it can be seen from the CM potency he used and repeating it
every other night
for 1 week at a stretch, without waiting to see the action of the first
dose as a test dose.
2.) Boger did not consider antidoting the quinine abuse. The presenting
picture
if it clearly points out to a remedy, then that remedy will also work as
an
antidote for the previous drug used/abused, whether it is listed as such
or not in the repertory.
3.)Unlike other masters like Allen , Boger did not consider the symptoms
and the order of appearance of the different stages of the intermitent
fever
like chill/heat/sweat stages.and their concomitants. He just ignored them
in preference to
the symptoms present during apyrexia.
4.)From a Kentian Perspective, the remedy chosen must also have the pace
and depth of action
and the miasm to match the case. Kent was highly critical of Hering for
recommending Bell for
Typhoid fevers since Bell has nothing in its provings to match the
continued nature of fevers. For Boger,
symptom similarity + constitutional concomitants + or - the local
modalities was all that
mattered and it is doubtful if this remedy formica can be indicated in
intermittent fevers,
judged from its provings. This opens up a pandora's box of what are the
potentialities of any
remedy and where do the drug pictures/portraits/essences stand vis-a-vis
its synoptic key.
4.) Remember the patient was given up for dead by his allopaths and in
such a precarious condition,
I personally would prefer a known, tried and trusted liver remedy like
nat-s, much as Dr.Terry Vanderheyden felt.
So it requires guts to go in for formica which is like its source a
small remedy !
This remedy itself is not a polycrest but when it is needed probably
none can take its place. So we need to keep track of such freak remedies
which are
difficult to come out by normal repertorization method.
5.)Now let us see another case by MORRISON R., (Seminar Burgh Haamstede
Sept 1987)
"... ... Do you know this remedy that does this: the joint gets hot,
swollen, very red, inflamed and very painful. It blows up and then it
goes down quickly and it goes to another joint and gets hot and swollen
again. You know that remedy? ..... And these on her arms look like the
bites of a red ant. I don't know whether that comes up in the proving.
So I gave her Formica rufa C 200. And in the meanwhile I checked some
blood tests and I also had a biopsy of the skin. It turned out it was a
vasculitis and she also had actinic keratosis and it turned out she had
a positive anti-nuclear antibody and she was diagnosed as having
systemic lupus"
Roger Morission cured this case in an old lady of 65 years with formica
200C rarely repeated and you may read it all in the SEMINAR transcript
for a full understanding of the case.
So it is to be construed that Formica is a deep acting remedy like any
polycrest even though not many cases are reported.
6.)Let us declare this week in honour of the Red Ant, and hold toast .(
I mean, read about it in as many MMs you can get hold of and read it
finally in Boger's Synoptic key.)
7.) Probably Boger knew the Jahr's method and put it to good use and the
success he thus obtained may have helped him from succumbing to that
collousal gaint Kent who was his contemporary. A lesser man would have
melted in the brilliance of Kent for sure and followed his foot steps
instead.
Thanks to J.VENKATA SUBRAMANIAN; Terry Vanderheyden for kind
participation.
and also to David Little for his recent post which has greatly helped
and minimised my efforts
in understanding this method.
with best wishes,
V.T.Yekkirala.

Re: Quiz - Cases from Masters-1- Answer (Long)
Dear VT,
Very nice! Where did you find the case ?
Boger's own larger rep doesn't contain the specific
remedy but Kent's does! (synthesis added the other
two).(sleepiness-storms before)
But in synoptic key , Boger has mentioned the triad of
sx among others for FORMICA.
REGION:
Joints.
Spine.
Liver.
Kidneys.
Right side.
WORSE:
Cold; wet.
Motion.
Before snow-storms.
BETTER:
Pressure.
Sudden rheumatic or gouty pains. Takes cold easily.
Tuberculosis. Hyper-plasia. ....................
Light, foaming stools. Hydrops ovarii. Nervous asthma.
Hives, in flat plaques. Profuse sweat, without relief.
The rare , strange & pec. symptom ,sometimes is found
in the suffering picture itself (disease) or ourside
it. Here, the reliable pqrs was the agg before storm.
Foamy(frothy ?)is also a common sx, as is pain ,lever
region but the combination is also peculiar.
Give us more of such cases!
Regards

Dear JV,
I am sorry.. I forgot to mention that it
is from Bannan's Collected WRITINGS OF C.M.BOGER.
Unfortunately it does not contain all the writings
of Boger.
With best wishes,
V.T.Yekkirala.
