Boenninghausen has five grades whereas Dr Case
mentions only four.
From my understanding and also the material in Hans
weitbrecht's
site www.boger-boenninghausen.com, the 'why' of five
grades are
given below. (this is not known to many.)

Since the Boen method
is all about combinations of different locations with
different
senations which can further be joined with modalities,
the grades
assume greatest importance. The highest grade
indicates the most
combinability of a remedy.

Grade: 1= (Acon), =lowest Proving-symptoms, rather
vague.
Grade :2= Acon Proving-symptoms, confirmed by
different provers.
Grade: 3= A c o n, Proving-symptoms, confirmed by
different provers,
and experienced in combination with different
proving symptoms.
Till Grade: 3 everything is defined by the proving.
Hahnemann and
Boenninghausen, then got the idea, that there might
be symptoms
which are listed under Grade: 3, which might even cure
in combinations
not experienced by the provers. So they needed
clinical confirmation
of this quality. This created:
Grade: 4= Acon Proving-symptoms,
+ confirmed by different provers,
+ experienced in combination with different proving
symptoms
+ confirmed clinically to have cured in combination of
even other
proving-symptoms of class 3.
(=FREELY COMBINABLE WITH GRADE 3, 4, 5, SYMPTOMS.
COMBINATIONS WITH
GRADE 1+2 NOT CONFIRMED)
Grade: 5= A c o n ,= highest Proving-symptoms,
+ confirmed by different provers,
+ experienced in combination with different
proving-symptoms
+ confirmed clinically to have cured in combination of
even other
proving-symptoms class 1, 2, 3.
(=FREELY COMBINABLE WITH EVERY SYMPTOM OF CLASS 1-5)

I thought I will share this.The source is Hans's site.
The key idea
is COMBINABILITY.

Boen's is a method. Not a tool or technique. It is a
logical
extension of the existing materia medica which
provides an
insight into the 'genius' of a remedy. In other words
it
shows what a complete materia medica would be.
Besides, if
we combine all the parts into kent's pattern, the
result :
The pocket book will expand into a multi Kent Rep. As
David
Little said recently that he has a mental TPB where he
freely combined loc, sens , and mods, each one of us
will have our own TPB. But an organised mind had done
a
great job already sparing us all the trouble.
