Has anyone heard any mental/emotional picture for urtica urens, or the
family Urticaceae?

Dear Shannon, I think I posted about this quite some time ago - worth trying
to get hold of Didier Grandgeorge's article of Urtica - a great deal of
grief in this rx, coming through 3 generations and finding expression in a
mother who was breastfeeding. Can't remember the title of the article but I
think it appeared in the SoH Journal. I am sure someone else can comment on
this - Patricia maybe.

There is a need to escape, to grow because they feel closed in. They want to
fly away and be free. They do not like to lie down (one of the main
modalities, >> lying down). It is a spleen remedy, the organ which fights
off infection, keeps it at bay. A lot of Vit C in nettles?? Also uric acid
diathesis, so lots of rheumatics. Affinity to chicken pox.

I will try and find the article.

Dear Joy & Shannon

I'm pretty sure it was in Links because I have read it and don't get any UK
journals.
From memory there was emphasis on conflict with the father.
I can remember subsequently having a case of urticaria in a late-teen female
who had HUGE conflict with her father (with, as Joy has described below, a
desire to flee...she'd just left home to try and make it on her own); Urtica
Urens worked nicely.

Urtica urens
The death of the father
This is a good remedy for urticaria (hives). Many of us have had the
unpleasant experience of being stung by nettles. With Urtica urens, we have
an attack of hives that inflicts the same sensation of burning and itching,
and which is aggravated by contact with water and with cold (Apis: urticaria
ameliorated by cold). This attack can come on after eating seafood. In
addition, there are sometimes rheumatic pains in the joints. These symptoms
reappear regularly each year.
Urtica urens is also a remedy known for its effects on lactation, which is
increased in nursing women under its action (for example, three globules of
7 CH every morning for a few days).
This remedy is often indicated in families where the members have been
marked by the death of the father, whether physical or psychological (the
father was absent or overshadowed by the mother).
Observation
One day, I am called to the maternity ward to see a baby. The mother asks
if I can give her something to help her lactation, which dropped off
considerably two days ago. I give her Urtica urens, which does wonders.
"What happened when your milk dried up?"
"That morning, they brought me my baby and his skin was all yellow! It was
just ordinary neonatal jaundice."
"Tell me about your father."
"My father died five years ago of liver cancer. One day he turned yellow .
. . and three weeks later, he was dead!"
Personal observation
During my years as a medical student, I was afflicted each spring by an
attack of generalized urticaria. I went to see the eminent physicians for
whom I was working at the time in Lyon. Each time, I was given the same
prescription: rest, diet, and the inevitable doses of cortisone. The attacks
became worse and worse; sometimes I even developed Quincke's edema (giant
hives) on my face, with signs of suffocation. I never went anywhere without
my ampoule of cortisone, ready for any emergency. Moreover, the BCG
(tuberculosis) vaccine never took effect on me, and I was being given a new
one every year.
One day, on the advice of a member of my family who had been cured of
migraines by a homeopath in town, I consulted the same practitioner. He
asked me all sorts of questions that seemed ludicrous, given what I was
studying. Then he prescribed a remedy for me: Urtica urens 7 CH. It worked
wonders on my attacks of hives (better than the cortisone!), which became
less frequent and began to fade away. Later, reflecting on the question of
this allergy, I remembered an incident from the past: a few years before, I
had accidentally fallen into a patch of nettles. My homeopath, with his
questions about my reactions to heat and cold, my perspiration, my food
cravings and aversions, had arrived at the truth about my problem.
Afterward, when the "eminent" doctors I had previously consulted would laugh
about the prescriptions made by homeopaths, I listened with a different ear,
and this experience set me on the path toward the type of medicine that
works with the whole picture, or the "terrain."
