Escherichia coli.
Escherichia is a genus of aerobic, facultatively anaerobic bacteria containing short, motile or nonmotile, Gram-negative rods. Glucose and lactose are fermented with the production of acid and gas. These organisms are found in faeces; occasionally they are pathogenic to man, causing enteritis, peritonitis, cystitis, etc. The type species, E. coli, occurs normally in the intestines of man and other vertebrates. It is widely distributed in nature, and is a frequent cause of infections of the urogenital tract and of diarrhoea in infants. [Stedman's]
This bacterium can easily become virulent since it can quickly multiply in both an acid and a base environment, and can even survive a temperature of above 42o C. Colibacillose as an illness is a reaction of the organism to the two endotoxins of E. coli. One affects the intestines, the liver and the excretion system, while the other affects the nervous system and can sometimes even evoke a psychotic symptom picture. [Neagu]
Infection with E. coli has been shown to be the most common cause of diarrhoea of travellers.
A peculiarity of certain bacteria such as E. coli is that they reproduce by conjugation, which resembles sexual reproduction, in that the two bacteria join and exchange genes. If a natural flora exists in the body, E. coli of the large intestine helps to control the body's water balance and to provide certain vitamins. Certain rare strains of this bacterium can cause food poisoning in young children, the elderly, and people with impaired immune systems.
The Escherichia genus [named after the German paediatrician Theodor Escherich] belongs to Enterobacteriaceae, that includes Klebsiella among others.

Neagu explains that a political situation based on repression and inescapable state control, as was the case in his country of birth, Rumania, causes a high incidence of colibacillose. This spiritual repression has a parallel in the physical suppression of colibacillose by antibiotics.
He holds that Colibacil-linum is most effective on people living in a communist or right-wing extremist dictatorship, or those who imagine themselves in such a situation.
