Hello Patricia,
Do you have any reference for this? I don't see how this can be accurate.

You should be able to hunt down the articles through Medline.

Thomas MR. Sneed SM, Wei C et al: The effects of vitamin C, vitamin B6,
vitamin B12, fokic acid, riboflavin and thiamin on the breast milk and
maternal status of well-nourished women at 6 months post-partum
Am J Clin Nutr 33:2151, 1980

Byerley LO, Kirksey A: Effects of different levels of vitamin C intake on
the vitamin C concentration in human milk and the vitamin C intakes of
breastfed infants
Am J Clin Nutr 41:665, 1985

Report of Nutrition During Lactation Subcommittee, Institute of Medicine:
Nutrition during lactation, Washington DC, 1991, National Academy Press

Picciano MF: Vitamins in Milk, A. Water soluble vitamins in human milk
composition, In Jensen RG editor; Handbook of Milk Composition San Diego,
1995, Academic Press

I haven't read these reports yet, but early signs of scurvy (or more
accurately a lack of vitamin C), in babies can be simple irritability,
crying a great deal, not eating well or poor sleep.

It is more interesting why Vit C doesn't filter through breast milk,
regardless how much the mother is consuming. It is a very unstable vitamin
but I am sure Patricia could say more about this - perhaps hormonal
influences effect it.

In the first 2 references don't see anything about cases on record of
breastfed babies showing signs of scurvy
while being breastfed because of the mother's ingestion of megadoses of
vitamin C in the pregnancy as you had state.

There was nothing online for 3rd one

The 4th one just talks about Vitamins in Milk......nothing about scurvy in
infants of moms who megadose.

That was the statement that you made that I was questioning.

I think your reference to the "instability" of the vitamin is probably the
key. I've not found any reference anywhere to it being influenced by
hormones and doubt that the medical profession would "bother" with
researching such phenomena since the mega-dose vitamin C scenario is not
well-accepted.

All that research has shown is that with megadoses, vitamin C levels go up
in the urine.(Picciano reference)

I aggressively prescribe vitamin C for mastitis along with the simillimum
and invariably get the "will it harm my baby ?" question and can safely
assure mothers that what their body doesn't need will be excreted.
