Vermeulen Synoptic 2\Cassia sopheraCASSIA SOPHERA
Cassi-s.
Cassia sophera. Senna sophera. Senna esculenta. N.O. Leguminosae [Caesalpinioideae].
Cassia is a plant genus with around 700 species of shrubs, herbs or trees, with pinnate leaves and usually with yellow flowers. The genus is indigenous to the [sub]tropics. A number of species produce a famous laxative [senna pods]. To this end, all kinds of 'senna leaves' from, for example, C.
angustifolia, C. senna, C. obovata, C. alata, C. acutifolia, etc. were used.
The active substances are glycosides called sennosides. Senna pods have a milder effect and have fewer side-effects than Senna leaves. The main effect is an increase in intestinal peristalsis and a reduction in the water absorption of the intestinal wall, which leads to accelerated stool. The purgative constituents are closely allied to those of Aloes and Rhubarb.
Side-effects, especially from fresh senna leaves, are intense cramp, excessive abdominal cramps, and irritation of bladder and uterus. Senna may not be administered to people who suffer from haemorrhoids or enteritis.
Their use during pregnancy or the lactation period is not recommended because of their excretion via the mother's milk.
Cassia sophera is indigenous to India and has been frequently used by ancient Indian physicians for its efficacy in respiratory disorders. Its Sanskrit name 'Kasamarda' means 'Destroyer of Cough.'
Two provings were undertaken by the Indian Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy. The first proving [1972-74] included 21 males and 9 females, the second [1974-76] 24 males and 13 females. Both provings were carried out with mother tincture, 30th and 200th centesimal potencies.
