Taro/Opiate withdrawal
My friend is back after several days in the hospital, detoxing codeine. She
feels much better but still very unwell, and has been told to expect to need
at least another month before she is over(?) it. Main problems now are
continuing (tho milder) "hallucinatory" mental activity, severe lack of
focus, and unplanned periods of deep, deep sleep from which she has trouble
waking, but also severe insomnia at night. Sometimes "creepy-crawly"
sensations, but these are much less.
My question: Last night she took a dose of Opium 30 and had an immediate
and powerful good response. She said there was a strong and immediate
feeling of well-being, and a "rush" that for her usually signals an
especialoly effective remedy. This morning she says she slept well for the
first part of the night, and for the rest sleep was restless and
"hallucinatory". She said she still feels better this morning, but symptoms
are returning somewhat.
I suggested water dose of same potency, and see how that does.
My main question: In this sort of situation, would twice daily doses be too
much, or can she dose "as needed" for a time (esp. in water)? I would love
to hear what responses others have seen in this sort of situation, and what
potency was used.
Thanks!

Hi Shannon,
Have you considered using an LM potency in this situation. Since they responded so well to the 30c you might want to start with a LM1 or 2. You can adjust the dose as needed. It might be worth a try.

Thanks Donna,
I'll keep the idea in mind. (I find Cs so much less confusing... but if it
continues working well and needing lots of repeats, that seems a good idea.)
Cheers,
Shannon

Re: Taro/Opiate withdrawal
Dear Shannon
When dealing with acutes I find a water potency [30C OK or 200C (better)] as
you've described works well and there's no chance of aggravation if you get
your patient to succuss [or stir] in between doses.
You can decide ahead if you want it repeated at a set time or give
instructions to use each time the symptoms return. For fevers I find that's
the best way. Might be best in this situation also; but you'd need to keep a
close eye on things.
You can stop the Rx as soon as complete amelioration has been established
and all S/S have settled.
I have found LMs work just as well and agree that they're more gentle;
prefer though to use them for more long-term chronic situations.
best wishes
Patricia

Hi Shannon
In this type of case, with very powerful, not such physical sxs. I would
look at her energy and the strength of the sxs. as a guideline for the
potency and dosage. Are you comfortable with ascending from 30 200 1M 10M
etc.? If so, we probably would see a quick return to normality, specially if
the client feels quite confident of the rx. already prescribed.

Hi Shannon
What has happened to the intolerable pain that led her to take the codeine in the first place?
You didn't mention it that was all

Dear Shannon ,
I would also go for the water potency and tell her to repeat it as needed. When it fails to work - go up potency.

Re: Taro/Opiate withdrawal
Well, it all feels a little complicated to me...
Altho these codeine withdrawal sxs are not so much physical, close
underneath those are the *very* physical sxs of severe (and unexplained)
chest pain and shortness of breath, which are the reasons she started the
codeine (and cortisone, yet to be managed). So I am not sure how to "score"
her overall energy level, but am not too confident at this point. I haven't
ever ascended potencies except over a long-ish period of time. And as to
"confident" re the remedy, it's too soon to say. She was *very* happy with
the initial effect, but when I talked to her she'd had only that one, so I
don't want to assume anything yet!
But to help give me a frame of reference, what sort of "asccending" would
you do in a not-so-strong patient?
Thanks,
Shannon

Re: Taro/Opiate withdrawal
Right, I was just realizing that myself!
I'll ask when I talk with her next. It was very much an issue right before
she went to the hospital, and I assume they had her on other painkillers
during her stay. If the pain were *gone*, I am absolutely certain she
*would* have mentioned that...

Hi Shannon
I understand, that is why I asked if you were comfortable with the ascending
potencies. Sometimes if one is not sure it is best to apply "no doing" be
patient. If she had such a good reaction from the opium 30 then it might
still be working and the hallucinations are probably her body detoxing from
the heavy drugging at the hospital. Let it be? would you be comfortable with
that?
