Often a person who is over weight will resort to using artificial sweeteners.
The most popular of these is now 'aspartame' marketed under a variety of names around the World (Canderel, Nutrasweet, Equal etc).
Apart from the other serious symptoms that it causes (MS, epilepsy, blindness, headaches etc) it also causes obesity because it interferes with 'full' signal of the stomach. So imagine that for lunch you take a sandwich and a diet Coke or Pepsi. It is as if you have not eaten the sandwich and you soon feel hungry so you consume more.

The other reason apart from what Dr Vallabhassery has said is the fact that every time one diets, the body is fooled into thinking that it is facing a famine crisis. So the metabolism of the body is altered to make more use of the food in take.
So lets say there is this lady at 70 kg and she wants to be 60 kg.
She will diet until she is about 61-62 kg and then she relaxes and starts to eat a bit normally (i.e. what she was eating before she dieted)
She VERY quickly puts on weight and before she knows it, she is nearly 72-3 kg.
So she is back on the diet and will struggle to reach 62-3 kg, then relaxes and then we find her nearly 75 kg.
This oscillation continues and every time she puts on a bit more when she relaxes - she will be struggling to get back down to her original 70 kg.
After 20-30 years she will be over 100kg !
Because the body is fooled into perceiving a famine situation, the vital force will decide on what is needed for long term survival. What it needs for that in a famine situation is FAT. So during the process of dieting, unused muscle is wasted to be converted in to fat.
So unless you exercise while you are dieting, you will be faced with gradual muscle wastage. This will result in the fact that the person tires quickly and so will sit down more and so the weight goes up!!
So a good food diet, needs minimal animal proteins, loads of fruits, nuts and fresh vegetables AND regular exercise - else you will have a FAT body on you hands (feet more like!).
Also if one drinks 3 litres of that very expensive medicinal substance called water (a tough task in itself for some) it will help with weight reduction.
