Dear fellow Minutus

Could someone please mail me a Word document with study notes on the devastating effects and disadvantages of this most inhuman crime to the woman. Also on the physiological and emosional effects this has on women.

I am also trying to get scientific notes on vasectomies on men, as I am quite sure this has some negative effect on men as well.

In South Africa modern doctors are making millions annually slaughtering woman and robbing them of their female maintenance, sanity, well-being, emosional stability, etc.

The same happens to men.

I would like to start a campaign in warning woman to avoid doctors in removing their uterusses, ovaries, etc.

Could a dear concerned collegue please help me with this?

Slaughtering is the way of life in capitalism anyway. It started when females were suffering from hysteria and doctors thought if you remove thier sex organs especially clitoris then then will not go wild. So it became hysterectomy. Hysteria was thought as HOT state of women. And then the practice continued till today though for different reasons and many more have been added to this fefarious crime against humenity.

it wasnt simply that women were suffering from hysteria. it was that any middle class woman who spoke up or
wanted to do something for her own life was considered hysterical. women were thought to be ruled by the womb, and did not have enough of a brain to direct her own life. this was a very victorian concept that developed alongisde the practice of allopathic medicine. the male attitude was that women could not have any control. some women were 'nervous' sorts. others played sick all the time for various emotional reasons. but the profession, which was totally white male controlled, directed and practiced in late 19c america, had a very pejorative view of women. note, the reference to middle-class and wealthier women. poor women were not viewed the same. they were expected to work like horses while bearing children to replenish the many factory workers and other lower level positions in the culture. the consequences, as nanga pir, notes was very detrimental to women with the medieveal practices performed on them. african-american women were surgically experimented on while the 'doctors' researched their venal curiosity and imposed control over women. the history is long and profound and remains with us today in the attitudes and practices of a patronizing business which relies heavily on women for economic exploitation. one interesting essay written on this history is called 'women, midwives and nurses' by barbara ehrenreich and barbara english.

Dear Tanya, I think it goes back a lot longer than the 19thC, it dates back
beyond the 17thC when 'midwives' were actually men who took over the role
and 'invented' the forceps and stirrup position for birthing and much later
when male scientists made connection with hormones, the uterus and the brain
(hysteria). Historically, women have had an active but also heavily
suppressed role in healing. Sadly even Elizabeth Garrett Anderson performed
oophorectomies unnecessarily by the thousands.

i agree. there is a very long history that begins about 500 yrs ago when the church claimed total control over
medicine. the 'witch hunts' were part of the consolidation of church power. women were the primary healers in europe and had great power in that role. and of course, they were the gyn's of the time. we can discuss this history at length--i just didnt want to take our discussions so far afield of homeopathy. but the history is profound and was part and parcel of the politics of the times that has telescoped into our present. women were big losers then and have been struggling ever since to reclaim a meaningful seat in medicine. having the numbers doesnt always mean they have the clout (but they should) in shaping the attitudes towards health and treatment of women. the eclectic healers included many women but they were diminished in numbers and power. homeopathy is one arena that women were able to work in as lay healers. but look at the difficulty that melanie had when hahneman died.

"victorian concept......" when QUEEN Victoria was reigning over the British Empire........how do historians concile having a Queen as the most powerful head of state at that time with all that happened to women?

And of course she 'reigned over us' less than a century after we were
burning hundreds of thousands of women in Europe as witches; and much of
this frenzy was not just Christianity gone made, but the fact that many of
these women had retained the 'old' medical knowledge.

Thanks for all the history - really interesting. Yet the number of women I
see who still think that a hysterectomy was the best thing that ever
happened to them.....

Well, Steve, there are a lot of women who have been led to believe that a
hysterectomy is the best thing that has ever happened to them...when it
isn't. Conventional medicine still functions in the belief that, once
menstruation has ceased, the uterus has no purpose in the body and it will
just continue to deteriorate in disease--so it needs to be yanked out.

They'll take it out for fibroids, they'll take it out if a patient refuses
hormone replacement therapy cause they are itching as a result of menopause,
they'll talke it out because...just because. It's still the single most
unnecessary procedure performed in North America, isn't it? Even more often
than a caesarian section?

In Canada, in the "poorer" provinces, a lot of women are led to believe that
keeping their uterus will only bring them trouble as they age. I lived in
New Brunswick for a year when I was in my early 30's, and I was quite
devastated to learn that, in my age group, I was one of the few women who
hadn't undergone a hysterectomy in our little town!! Everyone else looked
at me like I was some kind of hippy who believed in all that silly "natural"
stuff...but, I just can't believe people didn't see this as some kind of
female castration. Certainly none of the women in my own peer group, in my
own neck of the woods, would willingly submit to something like a
hysterectomy unless it was something that would save their lives. But they
had access to lots of medical information, plenty of services, libraries,
education, women with varied cultural and political beliefs, etc. etc.
Things which are not always available to all women.

So I guess that's why this mostly unnecessary practice continues, even into
the 21st century.

What's to reconcile? The Queen was charged with building and maintaining an
empire. I think what feminism has done very well is elucidate exactly what
role these "victorian" practices which subjugated women played in this aim.
After all, you can't have world domination without forcing a lot of people
to work for free, or provide their offspring "for the cause", or suppress
their own desires for their own lives for the purposes of creating a stable,
wealthy, self-perpetuating "society", right?

Awareness about those realities is not granted by according to sex or
gender--the Queen was raised to rule, just as any King was raised to do.
That she would think twice about how that would affect poor people and women
is something that's hard to believe...certainly no man would have done it in
her position, so why would it be expected of her, charged with the same
task? After all, she'd never have been allowed near the throne if she
didn't understand and embrace and think along those very lines. She'd have
been considered a grave threat to the country. In a man's world, only the
women who can think like the men are supposed to think get to play...and
Victorian England was quite definitely a man's world.
