Nightmare scenario!!

Post by Rochelle »

11,30am between patients I had a phonecall from the Bermuda man. He told me his skin was atrocious - eyes, nose, ears. "I am a walking disaster. The life I had has gone. It has taken me from 9 am to get dress. I am shaking . I asked him to come in at 12.45 - after my last morning patients and I also had a student in with me today. He said that he didn't think he could get there. I told him to get his wife to drive.

He arrived shaking with rigours. His skin was red with the odd white patch. He has a tremendous thirst. I took his temperature and it was only 35.2!! His pulse was racing. BP 160/'84 Pulse 115. His skin felt hot. I gave him a blanket to put round him although he felt hot. His skin was itching. This was one ill man I had in front of me and I was scared!! He was sat there with his wife refusing to go to hospital and saying that last time it was worse than this when he went and all they will do is to pump him with steroids and anti biotics and not cure it again. All he wanted to do was to go back to bed and sleep it off. Depressed that he is going backward, total lack of self esteem.
Other symptoms
Ear discharging last night clear fluid from the back of it and a strong smell of sulphur(possibly from crusty eczema?)
His left eyelid had dropped and that eye looked dull- then he told me he has been blind in that eye for years - never told me that before)
Shortness of breath (possibly because of anxiety)
Hands had a bluish tinge - he said his feet did too
Hallucinating - time has no meaning

I saw him on Tuesday and apparently since then the skin had continued to improve . There has been less flaking off in the bed His wife reckoned it was nice and smooth yesterday. He has been very tired. Hot baths desires but his skin has felt worse when he got out, as in very tight. He looked so well yesterday says his wife. She says has skin was perfect and his feet were less swollen. She said she got a shock this morning when this started. Suddenly the skin began to crack went scabby sore and dry. She also the skin on his ears was perfect yesterday. His wife said also that there was "shaking" on Saturday but he wasn't as bad. She spoke to me of twitching which is uncontrollable and can turn up in different limbs. An allergy to yeast and sugar was mentioned and his wife says that he had a piece of brown bread and a boiled egg before this really got a hold. I have just phoned and his wife said he is in bed fairly comfortable and wants to see this out again, "He is so proud and stubborn and will make himself do something when he is not well to prove he can do it."

Well the allopaths can't seem to see further than massive steroid and antibiotics and then the problem will still carry on until it decides to stop. Is the little homeopathy I have given him doing anything or is this dis - sease just carrying on its natural action?

OK before I say what I did I would really like to know what you would have down in the circumstances other than try to insist that he went to hospital which I did.

Dear Rochelle, a bit late but......
Nightmare cases are huge learning curves, to put it mildly but what a great
client in the fact that he has not been tempted back to the allopaths.

A few points/questions - this seems to be almost where the case started, so
he is going backwards and experiencing a return of old sx?? This is a big
question mark only you can answer really (it sounds like it to me if that is
any consolation :-))

Interesting that the ear discharge smelt like sulphur after he had eaten an
egg which would be full of sulphur. People who are allergic to eggs can
often smell the sulphur coming out of their pores.

Is this due to him coming off the aspirin? Side effects of withdrawal -
salicylic acid has hallucinations (so does arsenicum, I know). Might be the
bread. It seems most definitely an allergic state overall.

Are the other sx such as the shaking and twitching also old sx?

What is he drinking and how.

Details, details, so that you can be absolutely sure that he is responding
in a curative manner, albeit immensely aggravated.

Keep your courage, make sure he keeps phoning you (or you him). By the
sounds of it he will let you know if he cannot cope and by then enough time
will have passed for you to be more sure about the situation and whether to
prescribe again.

As the return of old sx has progressed to the emotional and mental level I
think it would be safe to prescribe Arsenicum again, higher, say 1m, (you
probably have done this already by now!!) however I think that I personally
would have used LM's in this case, you might have saved yourself a lot of
anguish.

Best, Joy

Thank you Joy, Venkat and Merrilee and those who posted privately.

What I actually did was to give Pyrogen , first in the 30 and then in 200 as he sat with me. My rational for this was the difference in temperature and Pulse rate and the fact that it is complementary to Arsenicum. When he left my house on Friday the temperature and increased to 36.9 and the shaking had stopped. I spoke to his wife later that afternoon and she had repeated the Pyrogen but he was comfortable in bed.

I have just spoken to his wife now. He had a prearranged appointment with the skin consultant this morning and they have kept him in hospital. They may well be transferring him to another hospital which has a specialist skin unit to get to the bottom of this. Over the weekend he has had the shaking on and off and his skin has still been bad. This is an old symptom that comes up everytime he gets a fever like this. He decided to start taking antibiotics given by the doctor last week on Sunday and apparently his ankles have now gone right down. He is still hot to touch but feeling cold inside. Also his wife said he is drinking gallons of water and is gulping it down!!! (Not Ars!!)

His wife says that since he has been on homeopathic treatment the blisters which popped have gone, there is no smell with this infection like there used to be, the patchiness of his skin has gone and his skin is now much softer and better than it has been for a long time. They both think that generally his complaint(s) have been improved.

The consultant is calling his condition chronic eczema - but what about the shakes and low temperature???

It will be interesting to see what the hospital does as the patient could well object to steroids - but will he have a choice?

I think I will be seeing him back in time

Thanks for your support on this one.

In chronic eczema when all the activity "inflammation" is at skin
level and the weeping from the skin causes constant dampness it is
the equivalent of living in a fridge. Evaporation causes cooling
lowering of body temp + external heat = chill. The shuddering is
shivering gone one step further into a hypothermia.
The correct remedy for the whole case will work beside a cortisone
steroid treatment, you do not need to stop the homoeopathic care.

Thanks Merrilee for the explanation which makes sense only in this case it is a very dry eczema- no weeping at all. The skin just flakes off and he has said that when he gets out of bed it is as if there is another person left behind. I think there is some sort of fever with this rash. His wife is aware that if he wishes me to prescribe for him when he is in hospital I will.
