"Pterygium is a raised, wedge-shaped growth of the
conjunctiva. It is most common among those who live
in tropical climates or spend a lot of time in the
sun. Symptoms may include irritation, redness, and
tearing. Pterygiums are nourished by tiny capillaries
that supply blood to the tissue. For some, the growth
remains dormant; however, in other cases it grows over
the central cornea and affects the vision. As the
pterygium develops, it may alter the shape of the
cornea, causing astigmatism. If the pterygium invades
the central cornea, it is removed surgically.

Since pterygiums are most commonly caused by sun
exposure, protecting the eyes from sun, dust and wind
is recommended. Instilling artificial tears liberally
is also helpful to decrease irritation. In some
cases, steroid drops are prescribed to reduce
inflammation."

Hi Soroush,

An I right in thinking that, since ptergium is a local symptom, the rubric
(such a nice, manageably small one!) would not be given much emphasis? (In
other words, if a remedy there fits the patient's overall picture great, but
if not, simply prescribe on "the rest of it"?) Esp. if there are no other
symptoms associated with the ptergium?

Broadly speaking and on a point of philosophy, apart
from possible cause of it being different, as we do
not treat warts per se, we should not treat pterygium
as a matter on its own. However in the rep there are a
few remedies associated with it - see below -but only
Arg-nit with pink ones!

I have had cases with tumours in the eye lids which
have responded nicely to the 'constitutional' remedy
of the child. So I go for the totality rather than a
particular symptom.

I would minimise exposure to Sun as a first line of
removing perhaps maintaining cause and if Sun Light is
a cause of it, there we have a start!
