case 2
This is a case of arthritis in a young man. I had a tough time finding the
remedy. In fact I gave three wrong prescriptions before I got the medicine
right. The symptoms I got are from what I could gather from the father as
in the beginning the patient was in no condition to come. The patient was
on heavy painkillers (NSAID) and was bed ridden. The doctors told the
father that he needed to be put on steroids. That frightened him so much
that he decided to try Homoeopathy. I will write the case exactly as It
unfolded before me. I will give you the symptoms of the all four
consultations and you can try to figure out what was prescribed each time.
After reading each consultation try to prescribe without going to the next
consultation. I have to mention here that like the previous case this is
not a good case to prescribe on as there are very few mental and general
symptoms. This is also exactly why I chose this case to present.
Ist consultation:
Pain joints
severe arthritis
Pains in ankle heels, hip, knees, elbows, fingers etc.
Continuous fever.
Pain started in hips, then the knees got affected, then the ankles and heels
and later the upper extremities.
Swelling of joints
Severe weakness
Eyes remain red
Pain shifting in nature
Pain alternating sides, one day left will be more severe the next day pains
of the right side will be more severe.
Desires salt
Thirst normal
No appetite
I prescribed something. The father asked me what they should do with the
medicines he was taking. I said if he can reduce them and slowly stop them
that would be a great help. They stopped the medicines immediately. The
fever shot up the pains became unbearable. The young man had a strong will
power and he told his father no matter what happens he was not going to take
painkillers again. I had called the father back after a week he came back
after three days with the news that the patient was very sick. The fever
had gone high and he was shouting with the pains. I gave him some saclac to
be repeated every two hours.
Second consultation:
Pains very slightly better(though still much worse than when they had
started). Can't sleep the whole night because of the pains. Fever slightly
less. No appetite, no thirst (In the first consultation thirst had been
normal) Dry mouth. Pains continue shifting. The pains are more shifting in
nature rather than alternating sides.
I gave another remedy?
Third consultation:
Fever was less the previous week. Pains were the same. Stiffness all over
the body. Severe pains on changing position in bed. Frequent waking at
night. The pains are worst at 3.00 am the patient weeps and screams with
pains at that time. Burning of hands and feet. No appetite, no thirst.
Pains have been worse on the left side this week. Swelling is slightly
less.
I gave yet another partially indicated wrong remedy. What would you give.
Fourth consultation:
Pains are there though the severity is less. Very little fever this week.
Swelling is almost the same. Appetite and thirst are the same. The patient
has been sleeping better this week. (Although the symptoms were slightly
better but I was somehow not satisfied with the progress. One reason is
that when the right remedy is chosen the appetite should immediately
improve. But the patient was persistently refusing to eat and had to be
forced to eat something). I tried to get more information. Two years back
before the disease started the patient started feeling weak and listless.
The he got a diarrhea which lasted for about one month and after that the
arthritis started. There was family history of tuberculosis.
Suddenly the picture became clear. I prescribed something the patient
started improving immediately. In two weeks time he came to visit me
himself. He joined his college. In two month's time he was playing
cricket. The swelling disappeared the pains are gone and after five years
he is still perfectly all right.

There certainly seems to be a stubborn nature here - this kept him from
taking the painkillers but also he refused to eat or drink. I kept thinking
about Apis and would possibly have given this at some point. I quite like
the idea of Kalmia with the shifting downward movement of the arthritis. The
3 am aggravation brings in many of the kaliums. Diarrhoea leading to
arthritis = Baptisia, possibly China. The continuous fever strikes with many
of these rx. Good case.

Interesting.
The changing nature of the symptoms, the aversion to eating, the high fever,
the severity of the symptoms, the diarrhea with weakness followed by
arthritis (all of these except the diarrhea can be taken as generals) --
make one think of Tuberculinum. Of course, that's after you found out about
the weakness and diarrhea.....
I'm still curious to know what worked for the first patient!! In the
message I got, only the first few lines came through.
