Re: External & Internal

Dear Rosemary

What part of Aph 194 leads you to believe that Hahnemann is advocating both
Internal and external remedy applications?

He starts clearly - It is NOT USEFUL ...

Please also see 196 and 197.

The point is, by removing external symptoms, it then becomes difficult to
know if a real (internal) cure has taken place. I would have concerns on
whether the disease has been suppressed.

Aphorism 194 of Organon :

'It is not useful, either in acute local diseases of recent origin or in
local affections that have already existed a long time, to rub in or apply
externally to the spot an external remedy, even though it be the specific
and, when used internally, salutary by reason of its homoeopathicity, even
although it should be at the same time administered internally; for the
acute topical affections (e.g., inflammations of the individual parts,
erysipelas, etc.), which have not been caused by external injury of
proportionate violence, but by dynamic or internal causes, yield most surely
to internal remedies homoeopathically adapted to the perceptible state of
the health present in the exterior and interior, selected from the
general store of proved medicines,1 and generally without any other aid; but
if these diseases do not yield to them completely, and if there still remain
in the affected spot and in the whole state, notwithstanding good regimen, a
relic of disease which the vital force is not competent to restore to the
normal state, then the acute disease was (as not
infrequently happens) a product of psora which had hitherto remained latent
in the interior, but has now burst forth and is on the point of developing
into a palpable chronic disease.'

It's interesting to note that Hahnemann advocated using just such an
approach (combining internal administration with topical application of the
same potentized remedy for systemic (chronic) conditions), in Chronic
Disease. I was surprised to read that, as it had never been brought to my
attention through my homeopathic education.

He does advocate it for specific situations, something about venereal
lesions, I think? But he did say specifically that the external application
had to be accompanied by internal. Anyone remember the citation?

External & Internal

Post by Dr.Naval Kumar »

hi
it is not recomended at all for external application just provided the
conditions in which only natural soothening agents are required like message
of oil in dry skin etc.
but external application in case of any chronic disease will produce complex
internal disease it is my clinical experience as i have seen 60,000 chronic
cases in my life,
best regards
dr naval kumar

Dear Shannon,

Yes, he advises this in certain conditions; 'very old
diseases'.
Aphorism 285:

'In this way, the cure of very old disease may be
furthered by the physician applying externally,
rubbing it in the back, arms, extremities, the same
medicine he gives internally and which showed itself
curatively. In doing so, he must avoid parts subject
to pain or spasm or skin eruption.'

He also advises the external application of
(crude)Thuja for figwarts in his 'Chronic Diseases'.

But application of this in all conditions may have the
risk mentioned in #194.

Ardavan Shahrdar

Hi Dr. Kumar,

When you say that external application in case of chronic disease will
produce complex internal disease, are you including measures which are
purely palliative, such as non-medicated oils, oatmeal bath, drying powders,
etc., or are you only speaking of medicated applications?

Thankyou,
Shannon

Thankyou, Ardavan! I had not remembered that it was for "very old
diseases", and this is interesting! Can you give more more understanding
about just what that would mean -- for instance, might it be useful in any
case with longstanding chronic disease, or do you understand it to refer to
something more specific?
