Re: Osteoporosis?

Post by Maria Bohle »

Can someone offer information on the allopathic use of fossamax
and the other meds that are used for Osteoporosis and osteopaena?

I have several clients who have been told to use these Rx meds,
as they have been threatened with being wheelchair confined in the
future, etc, if they do not use them.

Nutritionally, I suggest 1500mg of a Calcium amino acid chelate
with meals (500 each meal), and Magnesium amino acid chelate (250) total
of 750 a day, one each between meals and before bedtime - and to take
some cod liver oil capsules in the morning with breakfast to be sure they
have the nutrients needed to synthisize these minerals.

Some clients have done very well on this regime, but their
doctors still come back with dire predictions on how bad they will be in
the future (ie. ". . .Yes your bones are better, but not as good as they
should be.", etc, etc.)

Suggestions, reading materials for my clients, family, etc, or
any other information would be greatly appreciated.

Warmly, Maria
in need of some fortification.

Osteoporosis?

Post by Nancy Siciliana »

Hi Maria,

I have seen some patients run into the very severe side effects of fosamax
(which then becomes "diagnosed" as Irritable Bowel Syndrome!). People have
to undergo things like painful colonoscopies only to find out after the fact
that their "IBS" is caused by the fosamax...which they were given because
"they turned a certain age" or "they ought to be aware that they might have
osteopaenia".

Others, like my mother in law, are given the fosamax "just in case" another
medicine they're receiving might put their bone density "at risk". She's on
steroids for her arthritis and the fosamax has been prescribed to go with
it--though no bone density test was ever taken through the duration of her
"treatment" with these drugs.

So, basically, the drug is being handed out without too much cause in a lot
of cases (certainly the patient who is put on the prescription after a bone
density scan which suggests it may be necessary is in the minority).

I've yet to see "effectiveness" rates for fosamax which could rival the
supportive benefits of calc phos tissue salts alone. Patients usually have
to be on the drug for several years before they see any change; whereas with
tissue salts they usually do better within a much shorter time.

Hope this fortifies!
Nancy

Maria --

I have no "studies" to back me up (none have been done as yet), but I believe that use of Fossamax may lead to the development of lumbar stenosis, which, not surprisingly, is on the rise among elderly women in nursing homes. I'm working on weaning a number of clients from Fossamax (using Calc-phos. 6x instead), and one reported that her back pain immediately ameliorated when she went OFF the Fossamax.

It will be interesting to see if this goes the way of HRT.

Peace,
Cinnabar

Oops -- forgot to add this. An Indian physician in Kerala suggested Stillingia m.t. for cases of osteoporosis with significant bone deterioration, which sounds like your client.

Dr. Ramakrishnan uses Oophorinum 30c for women on HRT to prevent bone loss. He weans them off the HRT and uses the Ooph. for 2-3 mos.

Peace,
Cinnabar
