Blood Pressure

Post by Soroush Ebrahimi »

I think put simply, the upper figure is the force with which the heart has
to pump the blood so that it goes around the body
and the lower figure is a measure of the resistance the flow encounters in
passing through the tissues and capillaries.

So a low lower figure may mean either little resistance in the tissue (good
news) or too thin a blood (no so good)

If the patient is reasonably healthy, then probably there is little to worry
about. Extremities should be reasonably warm.

But if the pt is suffering from any giddiness, or blackouts or weakness,
breathlessness etc, then care would need to be exercised.

Hi Soroush or anyone else,
What does it mean if there is a big difference between the systolic and diastolic readings?

Dear Nandana

The first thought that went through my mind was the same as that by Angela.
Anxiety can cause BP to go high (My mother-in law was the same).

So perhaps this gives you an entry in to her case regarding her multiple
anxieties over a simple blood pressure test.
Concerns about her health, life, her dependants, Worries about being told
off by the doctor as if she personally is to blame etc.

Also it is healthy to have a high blood pressure at times and unhealthy at
other times.

High blood pressure is called the silent killer because often there are no
other symptoms and then BANG!

Please check on the amount of water she drinks too. If she does not drink
enough water, then she should be encouraged to drink more and this would
help greatly just on its own.

Good luck and perhaps you should give us more details of the case if you
require a more in depth view by colleagues on Minutus.

Rgds
Soroush.

Does this patient get anxious/nervous when about to see a practitioner? I'm

just guessing but it seems that is possible from the two readings in the two

circumstances.

I was wondering if giving this lady a wrist blood pressure monitor so that
she can keep an eye on her different readings for say a week would help?
She could record what happens in all kinds of situations and with all kinds
of thoughts, emotions, etc. I've done this on myself and been quite
surprised at how accurate a picture it painted of what made me stressful
than I hadn't consciously been aware of. And it also showed me how I could
change it at will, especially by concentrating on wanting to bring it down
................. fascinating!
