Catalyst

Post by Chris_Gillen »

For Australian viewers, there's a segment on homoeopathy on Catalyst, Thursday April 3, 8pm. ABC tv.
"Scientists and homeopaths have been at war for over 100 years." ;-)

Hi Chris
for the rest of us do you know if they have a web site and an
address for it. My daughter is doing research on exactly this
subject, and we could do with some help.

Many thanks
Merrilee

Hi Merrilee,

It was a replay of that same Horizon programme featuring Beneviste and the
Randi magician. I taped it but haven't watched it yet, if there is a website
I'll pass it on to you, otherwise someone else might still have a URL for
the transcripts from when the original Horizon programme was shown in
Britain.

Thanks Chris, please dont worry any further we have lots of info
from the web on this " odd " event, and need more info on positive
eperimentation that Homoeopathy works. Was hoping this might give a
clue as to that. Really appreciate your time

One anecdote that might be nice for her presentation, if anyone knows where
to find it... One of the "old masters", can't recall who, got his
introduction to homepathy thru being hired to write an "expose" of it. In
the process of trying to learn enough about it to "bust" it, he became
entranced and wound up becoming, well, an "old master".

Anyone remember the specifics of this?

Kent, himself, is a good example of a cynic turned convert.

The web site is as below:

http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/default.htm

They have links to the transcripts from there.
However, I should point out that the scientists were
not testing homoeopathy. They diluted a random
substance and tested it on a random sample. They
assumed that because they dilute a substance (at the
levels that homoeopaths do) that they are using
homoeopathy.

There was no list of Sx to go by, no repertorisation,
no selection of potency determined by a qualified
homoeopath, no remedy given that has a proven effect
on the given Sx, and therefore no effect SHOULD have
been expected. That's what they got - no result.
This, they concluded meant that homoeopathy doesn't
work, ignoring every principle that homoeopaths work
by.

I don't see how this is going to help your daugher,
Merrilee.

Wishing you well.

>... One of the "old masters", can't recall who, got his

Constantine Hering
began studying medicine at UNI Leipzig, age 17 -
fine pupil of prominent surgeon Henrich Robbi -
In 1821 a C. Baumgartner, a publisher in Leipzig, asked for
a work to be written against homoeopathy -
Through Dr. Robbi the task of writing such book was passed
on to his then-assistant Hering -
During Hering's studies of the material he read Hahnemann's
'Nota bene for my reviewers' ( in Materia Medica Pura) -
there he found " ... The doctrine appeals not only chiefly,
but solely to the verdict of experience - 'repeat the
experiments', repeat them carefully and accurately and you
will find the doctrine confirmed at every step' - and it
does what no medical doctrine, no system of physic, no
so-called therapeutics ever did or could do, it insists upon
being judged by the result."

Hering attempted to find out for himself and repeated what
Hahnemann suggested, for one the Cinchona-experiement - and
so he did find out -

A personal cure of gangrene developed from an infection
contracted during dissection with Ars alb given by another
homoeopath gave him an additional immediate experience, -
and so Baumgaertner's book never came to be -
Instead the title of his Medical thesis was
"The Medicine of the Future'

Thanks, Peter!!!
Do you recall where this information came from?
(And do you happen to have Kent's story as well?)
